Chapter 703 - Chapter 552

The bridge of the Dreadnought Thalassa hummed with the quiet rhythm of deep-water travel, a steady thrum that had become as natural as breathing over the past days. Marya sat in the captain's seat, one leg crossed over the other, her leather jacket creaking softly as she leaned back. The Heart Pirates insignia, the jolly roger's grin mocking the tension that always lingered just beneath the surface of their journey.

Galit's fingers danced across the pilot's console, his long neck craning at an angle that would make a normal human wince. Emerald eyes tracked the holographic display with the extreme focus. "Currents are stable," he muttered, more to himself than anyone else. "For now."

Aurélie sat beside him in the copilot's seat, her steel-gray eyes fixed on the readings. She said nothing, but her presence alone radiated the kind of quiet competence that made others feel safe. The blade at her hip—Anathema—rested against her thigh like a sleeping serpent.

At the forward consoles, Bianca had twisted around in her seat to face Atlas. Her magnifying goggles pushed up on her forehead, tangled in the mess of her black hair. "So, like, it's easy to keep in touch and stuff," she said, gesturing with a grease-stained hand. "I've got, like, this whole communication system rigged up. Like, works through just about anything except, like, you know, total reality collapse."

Atlas nodded, his rust-red fur shifting as he leaned back in his chair. Blue sapphire eyes half-lidded, he let out a long sigh that ruffled the charcoal tufts on his ears, considering the statement.

Marya cut in, her voice carrying that particular calm that somehow commanded attention without demanding it. "I thought you might stay."

Atlas's eyes snapped open, a smirk curling across his feline features. He spun his chair around in a slow circle, crossing his arms over his broad chest. "You trying to get rid of me, boss?"

Marya rested her chin on a bent elbow, the ghost of a smile playing at her lips. "Not at all. But—"

"No way, boss!" Atlas cut her off, his grin widening. "You're stuck with me until the end!" He jerked his head toward Bianca. "Besides, like she said, there's lots of ways to keep in touch. And now I've got some place to go when our adventure's done." He nodded to himself, clearly pleased with his reasoning.

Marya inclined her head. "Good to—"

Everyone whipped around at the sound of Charlie's chair squeaking as it spun. The pedantic polyglot practically launched himself upright, his pith helmet nearly flying off his head. His wire-rimmed glasses had gone askew, and his khaki shirt was untucked—signs of excitement that only intensified the urgency of his cry.

"I found it!"

Jannali's head snapped up from where she'd been studying the monitor in the console. Her headscarf had slipped slightly, and she absently adjusted it. "Bloody hell," she said, her drawl was thick with irritation. "Found what, mate?"

Charlie puffed out his chest, a triumphant gleam in his eyes. "The Island of Heh!"

Galit swiveled in his seat, his long neck curving in that unnerving S-shape. "And how exactly did you do that?" Suspicion laced his words, the natural skepticism of a tactician.

Charlie cleared his throat with a pompous ahem. "Halia, if you please."

The holographic woman materialized near the navigation array, her silver-blue hair drifting as if underwater. She let out a long-suffering sigh that somehow managed to convey centuries of patience worn thin. "This is the last known recorded location that references the term 'Heh.'" A holographic image bloomed to life—an island dominated by towering mangrove trees, their roots plunging into waters that shimmered with an unnatural quality.

Charlie cut in before she could elaborate. "Exactly! So one can only deduce that this is the Island of Heh."

Bianca raised an eyebrow, the pencil tucked behind her ear wobbling. "Like, for real? You're, like, totally sure?"

Aurélie rose from her seat, her silver hair flowing like liquid as she approached the holographic image. "What can you tell us about this island?" Her voice was quiet, with intensity.

Halia drifted through the hologram, her form flickering slightly at the edges. "It is an island abundant with life but devoid of civilization. No permanent structures. No evidence of habitation by any sentient species. The mangrove ecosystem dominates the entire landmass."

Jannali pushed up from her chair, walking around to view the hologram from a different angle. She squinted, as if trying to force the image to reveal secrets it was hiding. "Where abouts on an island like this would it be?" She gestured vaguely. " I can't see a bloody thing, no buildings or farkall "

Charlie folded his arms, adjusting his glasses with a self-satisfied air. "That, my dear woman, is the mystery we will have to unravel. The island itself is the puzzle. The answer lies not in what we see, but in what we cannot."

Galit spun his chair toward the group, his neck curving with fluid grace. "What's the location? I need coordinates to plot a course."

Bianca cut in before he could get an answer. "But, like, we're going to Selene-Clast first, Facility 38-14." She looked at Marya, her expression earnest beneath the grease smudges. "Because, like, the ship needs, like, a ton of maintenance. The whole power distribution grid is, like, totally out of whack. If we don't—"

Marya held up a hand, and Bianca fell silent. "Yes. Maintenance first." She glanced over her shoulder at Jannali and Charlie. "Then the Island of Heh."

Jannali opened her mouth to reply—

And the world lurched.

The submarine listed violently to starboard, sending Jannali, Charlie, and Aurélie sprawling across the bridge. Charlie's satchel burst open, scrolls and notebooks flying everywhere. Jannali hit the deck hard, a curse ripping from her throat. Aurélie managed to catch herself against a console, her hand instinctively going to Anathema.

Atlas shouted, his claws extending as he grabbed the armrests of his chair. "What the hell?!"

Galit's fingers flew across the pilot's console, his face a mask of intense concentration as the submarine pitched and rolled. "I don't know! We're stuck in some kind of current. I can't break free!"

Halia's voice cut through the chaos, sharp with alarm. "It's a magnetic current. The readings are—" She looked down at her hands as her holographic form began to flicker, static crawling across her features like crawling insects. "Oh no."

Bianca's head whipped around. "Halia, like, go offline before—"

The hologram vanished.

The submarine tumbled through the water like a toy caught in a whirlpool. Metal groaned and shrieked around them, the sound of a wounded beast. Lights flickered, consoles sparked, and somewhere in the depths of the vessel, something massive clanged with the force of a giant's hammer.

Marya braced herself in the captain's seat, her teeth gritted, her golden-ringed eyes fixed on the viewscreen ahead. Through the chaos, she could see nothing but churning darkness and the occasional flash of something metallic racing past the hull.

The submarine slammed to a halt with a bone-jarring crash that threw everyone forward.

Silence descended like a shroud.

Marya rose from her seat, her boots echoing on the deck. "Is everyone alright?"

Around her, the crew picked themselves up one by one. Atlas shook his head, a low growl rumbling from his chest. Galit was already back at the console, his fingers hovering over dead controls.

Then the lights went out.

Emergency illumination flickered to life, painting the bridge in crimson shadows. The red glow turned every face into something strange and unfamiliar—the demons that lived inside each of them given form.

Jannali pushed up from the floor, her hand pressed to her head. "Bloody hell," she muttered. "What..."

Galit slammed his palm against the pilot's console, frustration bleeding through his normally controlled demeanor. "We have no power. Everything is dead. Completely dead."

Bianca's voice cut through the red-tinged darkness. "Like, yeah. Like nothing is working." She tapped a small device on her wrist, frowning. "Not even, like, the emergency backups. Like, whatever grabbed us, it, like, totally fried everything."

Everyone's heads snapped up at the sound of a giant thunk from somewhere above.

Then another.

And another.

Aurélie's hand closed around Anathema's hilt, the black blade vibrating in her grip. "It would not be wise to let them board the ship." Her compound eyes flickered—a brief flash of the monster that lived within her.

Marya nodded, her own hand falling to Nisshoku's grip. "Agreed."

The hatch to the bridge flew open.

Jelly bounded through first, his translucent blue body jiggling with barely contained excitement. "Bloop! Did someone say adventure time?!"

Eliane followed close behind, her silver hair bouncing, a smudge of flour on her cheek from her latest culinary experiment. Her blue eyes sparkling with kind of earnest enthusiasm that could only belong to a twelve-year-old who'd never known true danger.

Vesta came next, her rainbow hair practically glowing in the red emergency lights. Her guitar, Mikasi, was strapped to her back, and she looked like she was about to break into a concert despite the situation.

Ember followed, her mismatched eyes—one icy blue, one gold—scanning the bridge with predatory interest. The charred plush rabbit, Mr. Cinders, swung from her waist as she began to giggle. The sound built and built, a manic crescendo that filled every corner of the room. "Boom boom time!"

Sanza entered with the regal disdain of a tiny monarch, his red hair a messy halo around his head, his vintage Gundam-style t-shirt bearing the unmistakable marks of a child who'd been playing in the dirt. He gripped his bamboo practice sword as if it were the legendary blade itself.

Bō-Zak ambled through the hatch with the casual grace of a man who had absolutely no sense of urgency. His tattered shawl hung loosely over one shoulder, and his long pipe smoldered between his fingers. "You all having a party and forgot to invite us?"

Kaburo followed, his dark hair pulled back in its low ponytail, his hand resting on the hilt of Kalamaru. The cursed ōdachi humming with hungry anticipation.

Galit looked around at the assembled group, his long neck curving in a gesture of exasperation. "Not quite. We're dead in the water. No power, no propulsion, no nothing."

As if to punctuate his statement, another massive thunk echoed from the hull. Then another.

Kaburo's hand tightened on his blade. "We should go."

Marya met the eyes of each crew member in turn. "You know what to do."

Jelly bounced in place, his gelatinous body rippling. "Adventure time!"

Ember's giggle rose to a fever pitch. "Boom boom time!"

Marya nodded, her hand falling to Nisshoku's hilt. "Let's move."

---

The bridge emptied in a flurry of motion. Boots pounded against metal decking. Voices called out orders and questions and reassurances. The emergency lights cast everything in shades of blood and shadow, making allies look like strangers and strangers look like threats.

Marya led the way, her leather jacket creaking with each step. The Heart Pirates insignia a beacon of purpose in chaos.

Behind her, her crew followed.

And somewhere above them, on the surface of the strange island that had pulled them from their course, something waited.

Something ancient.

Something hungry.

Something that had been waiting for a very, very long time.

---

The hatch sealed behind them, and the bridge fell silent. The emergency lights continued their crimson vigil, casting long shadows across the abandoned consoles. Somewhere in the depths of the submarine, a system that had survived nine hundred years of isolation finally succumbed to the overwhelming force of Metis's magnetic grasp.

The Dreadnought Thalassa was no longer a vessel.

It was a prize.

And on the island above, Athene smiled.
