Chapter 54 - Chapter 54 :Dinner Among Secrets

The quiet of her room did not last long.

A soft knock echoed from the door.

"Claire?"

Her mother's voice.

Claire sat up immediately. "Yes, Mom?"

The door opened slightly, and her mother peeked in, her expression gentle but purposeful.

"You're free tonight, right?"

Claire hesitated for a fraction of a second.

"…Yes."

Her mother stepped inside fully this time. "Randy's father invited you for dinner. He called earlier. He said it's been a while since you visited."

The words fell calmly, naturally — as if nothing about it was unusual.

But Claire's fingers stiffened on the bedsheet.

Randy's house.

Again.

A place that always felt warm on the surface…

and unbearably heavy underneath.

"Oh," she answered softly, lowering her gaze. "Tonight?"

"Yes. Around seven. I already told them you would come."

A small pause.

Her mother smiled faintly. "They've helped us a lot in the past, Claire. It wouldn't be polite to refuse."

Of course.

Claire nodded slowly.

"I understand."

But inside, something tightened.

Miko's voice echoed faintly in her mind.

You have to be careful with Randy.

She inhaled quietly and stood up.

"I'll get ready."

Night arrived sooner than she expected.

The sky outside was dark blue, with faint city lights flickering like distant thoughts. The car ride to Randy's house was quiet — too quiet — filled only with the soft hum of the engine and the ticking of time she could not slow.

When the car finally stopped in front of the familiar gate, Claire felt her chest grow heavier.

The large house stood elegantly as always. Warm lights glowed from the windows, welcoming, peaceful… safe.

Or at least, it appeared that way.

The door opened before they could even ring the bell.

"Claire."

Randy's father greeted her with a gentle smile, his tone warm and polite.

"It's been a while. Come in."

"Thank you for inviting me, Uncle," Claire replied softly, bowing her head slightly.

The scent of freshly cooked food filled the air as she stepped inside.

Everything looked the same.

The polished floor.

The quiet hallway.

The atmosphere that always felt too composed.

Too controlled.

And then—

Her steps halted.

Someone was already sitting in the living room.

Diana.

For a split second, time seemed to freeze.

Diana's eyes widened visibly the moment she saw Claire.

"…Claire?"

The surprise in her voice sounded genuine.

Claire blinked once, slow and calm, though her pulse quietly accelerated.

So she didn't know.

Diana quickly stood up, smoothing her dress as if trying to recover from the unexpected encounter.

"I didn't know you were coming," she said with an awkward laugh, glancing briefly toward Randy's father. "I just came to visit my cousin today. Family matter."

Cousin.

The word settled heavily in Claire's mind.

So that was the connection.

Randy, who had been standing near the stairs, remained silent, his gaze shifting between them with quiet observation.

For a brief moment, the air became unbearably awkward.

A past mistake.

An unresolved tension.

A history neither of them mentioned — yet both clearly remembered.

Then suddenly, Diana smiled.

Sweet. Polite. Almost flawless.

"It's been a long time, Claire," she said warmly, walking closer. "You look… better."

Claire looked at her.

Straight into her eyes.

And smiled back.

Gentle.

Soft.

Perfectly composed.

"Yes," she replied calmly. "It has been a long time."

Inside, however—

She knew exactly what Diana was doing.

Pretending.

Acting kind.

Acting harmless.

Acting as if the past had never happened.

But Claire did not expose it.

Because she was doing the same thing.

Two actresses.

One stage.

One silent audience.

"I'm glad you're here," Diana continued, her voice overly friendly now. "We should talk more. We used to be… quite close, didn't we?"

A subtle emphasis on the last sentence.

Claire tilted her head slightly, as if considering the words.

"Did we?" she answered softly.

Not denial.

Not agreement.

Just ambiguity.

Diana's smile stiffened for a fraction of a second.

So small that anyone else might have missed it.

But Claire didn't.

Randy finally spoke, his voice calm but unreadable.

"I didn't expect you two to meet today."

His eyes lingered on Claire for a moment longer than necessary.

Observing.

Measuring.

As if trying to read something beneath her calm expression.

Claire turned to him slowly.

"It's a coincidence," she said gently.

Randy hummed quietly, but said nothing more.

Dinner began shortly after.

Plates were placed neatly. Conversations flowed politely. Randy's father spoke about work, about daily life, about ordinary topics meant to keep the atmosphere light.

But underneath the surface—

Tension lingered like invisible threads across the table.

Diana occasionally glanced at Claire.

Too often.

Too carefully.

"So," Diana said suddenly, placing her spoon down, "you still go to the same school, right?"

"Yes."

"And you're still… close with Randy?"

The question sounded casual.

But it wasn't.

Claire lifted her gaze slowly.

Randy did not interrupt.

He simply watched.

"I wouldn't say 'close'," Claire answered gently. "We just have a long history."

A truthful answer.

Yet deliberately vague.

Diana let out a soft laugh. "That's true. His family has always been very protective of you."

Protective.

The word echoed faintly in Claire's mind.

Or controlling?

Or observing?

She lowered her gaze to her plate.

From the corner of her vision, she noticed something.

Diana's hand tightened slightly around her glass.

Nervous.

Not relaxed.a

Not natural.

So she was curious too.

So she was curious too.

Good.

Because Claire was also watching her.

Carefully.

Quietly.

Patiently.

If Diana was truly just visiting for family reasons—

Then why did her questions keep circling back to Randy?

To school?

To relationships?

Claire took a small sip of water, her expression calm as ever.

Inside, however, her thoughts sharpened.

She's pretending to be nice. But she wants information.

And that was perfectly fine.

Because Claire was pretending as well.

Her lips curved into a faint, gentle smile as she finally looked at Diana again.

"You seem surprised to see me here," Claire said softly.

Diana blinked. "Of course. I didn't expect it."

A pause.

Then Claire added, in the same calm tone,

"Or… did you?"

Silence fell for exactly one second too long.

Just enough to make the air feel heavier.

Diana laughed again — a little too quickly.

"You're overthinking," she said lightly.

Claire did not respond.

Instead, she shifted her gaze slightly across the dining room.

For a brief moment, her eyes landed on the hallway.

The same hallway Miko once mentioned.

The same house where Sam had once lived.

The same place connected to a past no one openly talked about.

Her chest tightened subtly.

But her expression remained serene.

Tonight was not just a dinner.

It was a stage full of hidden intentions.

Diana pretending kindness.

Randy observing silently.

And Claire—

Playing along.

Because if Diana was here by coincidence…

Then this dinner might reveal more than any direct question ever could.

And for the first time that evening,

Claire did not feel like a guest.

She felt like an observer inside a house full of secrets.
