Chapter 11 - Chapter 11: The Return to the Past

Chaya's breath quickened as she stepped into the darkened corridors of the Cairo Museum, the scent of ancient dust mingling with the cool, conditioned air. The sound of her footsteps echoed in the silence, each step a reminder of the decision she had made—the leap into the unknown, the act of betrayal against her family and their expectations. She had left everything behind for this one moment, and now there was no turning back.

The streets of Delhi had been a prison to her for the last few months, despite the opulence of her royal life, the lavish gatherings, and the endless responsibilities that came with her title. But none of that mattered now. The glittering palaces, the grand halls, the endless parties—they were all a distant memory, faded against the pull of something far stronger. The pull of Egypt. The pull of Thutmose.

She had planned her escape meticulously. A few days before her family's annual gala, when her brothers were preoccupied with last-minute preparations, Chaya had slipped away unnoticed. A carefully arranged flight ticket to Cairo, a few whispered words to her trusted assistant, and the cover of nightfall had been her allies. No one had suspected a thing. They had all been too absorbed in the upcoming royal events to even notice she was gone.

The plane ride had been a blur. A mix of anticipation, guilt, and excitement. She had spent the hours staring out the window, watching the vast stretch of ocean below, trying to calm her racing thoughts. The idea of running away from everything she had ever known, everything she was supposed to uphold, was terrifying. But when she thought of Egypt, when she thought of Thutmose, the fear ebbed away, replaced by an unshakable conviction.

Now, here she stood in front of the museum's towering entrance, a place that held the secrets of the past—secrets that had called to her from the moment she laid eyes on the amulet. The very same amulet that had transported her to a time long gone, to a world she had only dreamed of. And it was here, preserved and on display, within the walls of this very museum.

As she walked deeper into the exhibit, her heart raced. She had spent hours researching, studying the history, the artifacts, the legends that had brought her here. And now, the very object that had bound her to another life, another time, was within her grasp. The amulet sat on a pedestal under a glass case, bathed in soft light, as though it were a precious relic waiting to be discovered again.

She couldn't stop herself from reaching out, her fingers grazing the cool glass as she stared at the amulet. The intricate carvings glistened in the light, symbols she had never fully understood, but ones that had always drawn her in. It was more than just an object; it was a bridge between worlds, a key to unlocking the mysteries that still haunted her dreams.

"Is it real?" she whispered to herself, her voice barely a murmur in the empty space. She leaned closer, her breath fogging the glass as she studied the amulet with a mix of reverence and longing.

She had seen it before, held it in her hands, but this time, it was different. This time, it felt like destiny. Like the universe had conspired to bring her back to this very moment.

Her mind swirled with thoughts—of Thutmose, of the dreams, of the deep, inexplicable connection she felt every time her eyes closed and she was transported back to the palace in ancient Egypt. She could still feel the weight of his gaze, the heat of his touch, the way he had held her like she was the only person who mattered in the world.

Was it all real? Or had it simply been a product of her imagination, a dream born from the deepest recesses of her desires? She couldn't answer that, not yet. But one thing was certain—she had to know. She had to understand why she couldn't let go of him, why the bond between them felt so powerful, so undeniable.

Chaya's hands trembled as she turned and began pacing the floor of the exhibit. The answers were here, she knew that. The amulet was the key, the first step in unraveling the truth. But how could she take it? How could she possibly explain what had happened? She couldn't just waltz in and demand it. Not without a plan. Not without reason.

She needed to research it more. She needed to study its origins, its connection to the pharaohs, to the ancient gods, to the time she had touched. It was the only way she could uncover the truth. But first, she had to find a way to get her hands on it without attracting attention.

"Excuse me, miss?" a voice suddenly interrupted her thoughts, and Chaya turned to find a museum employee standing a few feet away, her face polite but curious.

"Can I help you with something?"

Chaya's heart skipped a beat. She straightened quickly, trying to hide her agitation. She had been so absorbed in the amulet that she hadn't noticed the woman's approach.

"Uh… no, I'm just admiring the exhibit," Chaya said, forcing a smile as she stepped away from the case. "It's just so fascinating. I'm… conducting some research for a project."

The museum employee nodded, though her expression remained uncertain. "I understand. If you need any assistance or information about the artifact, please let me know."

Chaya nodded in return, her mind already racing. She had to be careful. She couldn't afford to draw any more attention to herself. Not yet.

As the employee walked away, Chaya stood there, her gaze fixed once again on the amulet. The desire to take it, to possess it once more, was overwhelming. But she knew she had to be smart about this. The amulet wasn't just an artifact—it was a key to a world she couldn't fully comprehend. And she was determined to unlock its secrets.

She would find a way. She had to.

As she turned and walked towards the exit, her mind whirring with plans, a quiet resolve settled over her. She wasn't leaving Egypt without it. She wasn't leaving without the answers that had eluded her for so long.

And one way or another, she would return to the desert. She would return to the past. She would return to Thutmose.

Her heart beat faster at the thought, and for the first time in months, she felt a surge of purpose. This was just the beginning. The beginning of something far greater than anything she had ever known.

The pull of Egypt. The pull of Thutmose.

It was stronger than ever. And she wasn't going to fight it any longer.
