Rui's lower lip jutted out in a pout that would have been comical if not for the genuine longing in her eyes.
"I know you're right," she said, her voice carrying that particular sulky tone that meant she understood the logic but hated it anyway.
"It's just... frustrating."
She flopped back against the pillows dramatically, one arm thrown over her eyes.
"Here I am, finally having you confess your feelings, finally getting to kiss you properly, and we have to be responsible about it."
Shen's lips twitched despite himself. Even in the midst of desire and disappointment, Rui managed to be adorably theatrical.
"The trials aren't exactly the ideal time to discover I'm carrying another heir to the Underworld throne," she continued, peeking at him from beneath her arm.
"Can you imagine?"
A soft chuckle escaped Shen's carefully maintained composure.
