"Adriana…"
Craig's voice came out like a whisper, almost to himself.
He rose from his crouched position beside Cameron, straightening slowly. The little blue car slipped from his hand and rolled lazily across the floor.
Adriana's eyes followed the object for a second, then back up to him. Her composure was unnervingly still, like the hush before a hurricane.
Craig stepped forward and pressed a brief kiss to her cheek, the gesture automatic, rehearsed. Her hands stayed stiff at her sides.
"What's going on?" she whispered in his ear, the words almost lost beneath Cameron's playful chatter.
Merlina stayed low beside her son, her hands busy straightening the tiny cars that didn't need straightening. She didn't look at Adriana or Craig, not once. Her focus stayed on Cameron, on the safety of his little, bright world.
"Mommy, look!" Cameron held up his toy car proudly. "I won again!"
