Chapter 42 - The Mole was no more

After a day, near Count Herbert's mansion, Rowan, who leisurely travelled the whole road, came running and screaming at the Count's gate that he had very bad news. Count Herbert ordered his servants to bring him in. Rowan, with practiced trembling hands, approached the Count and said,

"Your Highness, I... I made a grave mistake. Please forgive me... The Guest... the guest, whom I was supposed to take to the Mage District... was... (crying) was... eaten by a magic beast. I know I deserve to be punished, but please... please forgive my failure to protect the young lady..."

The Count, who had already received Alicia's message, signaled to the Baron to come inside. The Baron shouted,

"WHAT ARE YOU SAYING ROWAN! THE GUEST IS KILLED!! Oh no..."

(Rowan showed a slight smirk)

The Count spoke,

"How can you fail to protect such an important guest, Rowan? You are right, you deserve to be punished... (Rowan slightly wavered by this) No, you deserve Capital Punishment... Knights bring the sword and kill this imbecile who ran away and abandoned a little girl in the woods."

Rowan was utterly shocked by this. Afterall, he didn't expect the usually kind Count to execute him. He expected the Count to be shocked and to grieve, not to execute him right away. He stammered for forgiveness, but the Knights brought him out of the mansion, and as he pleaded and shouted for forgiveness, they executed him right in front of the Count.

The Count opened the letter from Alicia, which was delivered by a magic dove. Its contents were,

'Grandpa, I have reached the mage district, and I am safe. If the Coachman comes with bad news, execute him right away. He is the mole you are looking for.'

The Count sighed and spoke to the Baron,

"If this letter didn't come through, I don't know what I would have done in grief. To think Rowan was the mole... I am so ashamed that I didn't see this... (crying) I put my granddaughter in jeopardy by my foolishness."

The Baron consoled the Count. The Baron spoke,

"I sometimes see Bella in that child. Don't worry, Father, I am sure Cia will be safe from now on. We should thank the Goddess for her kindness towards us."

The Count, still in tears, nodded. Wiping his tears and with a stern face, he ordered his servants to clean that 'mess', and they both went inside the Mansion.
