Chapter 22 - Chapter 22

March 5th 2418 – UA Academy - Musutafu, Japan

3rd Pov:

Aizawa was tired.

After a long night spent patrolling the city hunting for crime, he'd returned to UA to rest for a bit before he inevitably had to teach his class.

However, what little energy he'd recovered was quickly being siphoned away by the group of rowdy teens he'd been saddled with.

Thinking back on his past he only slightly regretted signing away his soul to the small mousey overlord running the campus he was currently on.

The contract he'd signed was a teaching one that put him in charge of UA's hero course, 'a fitting spot for someone of his skills' Nezu would say. And loathe as he was to agree, his current position put him in the prime spot to protect the next generation of heroes.

Still, the current group he had was draining his energy faster than any he had before, each one problematic in their own way.

There was of course a few who stood out above the rest with their …'troublesome personalities'.

Glancing over the crowd he mentally profiled those he'd chosen to keep an eye on.

The first and possibly the most troubling student he had was Katsuki Bakugo. From the research he'd done Aizawa had discovered the teen was a notorious bully at his old school, though the staff there tried to cover it up best they could, likely contributing to his over inflated ego.

The erratic blonde's personality was worse than a pile of warm shit, he was violent, quick to anger, and had a clear disdain towards basically any other person he talked to.

Yet despite that his power and talent set him apart from others, even garnering a small bit of respect from Aizawa. However no matter how talented he was, he was still abrasive and rude with no signs of improving, or even wanting to.

Something Aizawa would have to work on if the teen was to ever be a hero.

The next student he was keeping an eye on was Izuku Midoriya, for reasons unknown to him at the moment it seemed All Might had taken great interest in the boy.

Recalling the teen's quirk a frown made its way onto Aizawa's face. Officially his quirk was an unnamed strengthening type, however unofficially the kid didn't have a quirk at all.

It was a puzzling situation that was only exacerbated by Izuku's actions. He had a very selfless personality, dedicating himself solely to the study and worship of heroes, which for Aizawa lead to some problematic traits.

For one Izuku had proven he was more than willing to cause major injury to himself in order to help another, which in the field could cause him to be a burden on his allies.

More concerningly he had also shown a staggering lack of control over his quirk, meaning he could very easily cause more damage to his surroundings than any villain he fights.

However, Aizawa reasoned, all those traits could be worked on. His quirk could be trained, his responses practiced till they were more strategic and thought out, and his hero worship pushed to aid his fellow classmates.

Taking a quick glance at the mass of students crowding around a confused looking girl with midnight black hair and fox like features, Aizawa could only sigh again.

The girl at the centre of her classmates veritable wave of questions was the third problem student he'd opted to keep an eye on, Sage Durand.

Her quirk was strange in the fact it didn't seem to have any one effect, on her submission form she'd wrote down 'Restoration' as her quirk but reality had shown otherwise.

In the practical exam she soared to first place with incredible speed, easily tearing through the villain bots with ease. However, nothing about her speed was mentioned in any documents, something which had gotten Nezu's attention.

Thinking over the other skills he'd seen her use Aizawa slumped slightly, more abilities meant Nezu would want more reports, and that meant less sleep.

'She's shown: Transformation, Super Strength, Enhanced Speed, Super Flexibility, and Healing.'

Mentally recalling all the powers he'd seen her use in both forms, he could already feel a headache forming.

Deciding his students had more than enough time to talk, he tuned back into reality.

"Enough games, get back to the test now. Tenya Iida and Toru Hagakure, you're up."

Sage Pov:

Breathing a sigh of relief when most everyone's gazes turn back to the race, their curiosities temporarily sated, I slink away to the back of the crowd where Momo was standing.

Stopping next to her my shoulders and ears slump slightly. Hearing a chuckle I glance to the side at Momo, her ponytail shaking slightly from the effort she puts into suppressing the sound.

Pouting I turn away, I don't get why she was laughing, socialising is exhausting.

"Ohh don't pout Sage, you know I'm just joking. Now, are you going to look up? Toru is running now?"

Jolting slightly I do my best not to show how much thinking of Toru improves my mood as I subtly reach for the glasses in my pocket, however I guess I wasn't subtle enough if Momo's giggle was anything to go by.

I suppose that's how it is with someone you've known nearly your entire life, they can see right through you, in a good way of course.

Sighing, I decide it doesn't matter and put my glasses on without any extra fanfare. Instantly my eyes tingle slightly as they are forced to rapidly refocus, while at the same time the world around me shifts ever so slightly, a few scuffs now visible here, a warm patch over there.

Yet out of all the beauty the glasses show to me, Toru stands heads and shoulders above the rest. I don't know what it is about her, something about just her presence alone makes my heart beat faster and the world seem more vibrant.

Smiling I give Toru a thumbs up as she looks over at me, the subtle gesture causing a wide smile to bloom on her face that does weird things to me.

Turning away with a slight blush I find myself face to face with a vibrant pink girl with small yellow horns sprouting from her head.

Looking into her strange yellow and black eyes with almost square like pupils, I'm suddenly aware of just how close she was. Leaning back away from her a bit, she pouts in what I can only assume was mock sadness before switching to a vibrant smile.

"Hiya there! I wasn't able to introduce myself earlier, I'm Mina Ashido!"

Caught off guard by her bubbly and energetic attitude, I take another step back so she wasn't in my face before replying.

"Um… nice to meet you, I'm Sage Durand, but you can call me Sage."

"Awesome name Sage, so… you and Toru huh?"

Sputtering slightly at her bold claim I quickly glance around to make sure Toru didn't hear it before rebutting.

"I have no idea what you're talking about, Toru and I are friends and that's all."

"Really. I saw the look you were giving her earlier, that's not 'friends' that's something else. But hey! You do you girlie!"

As much as I wanted to shoot down her claims right here and now, a small niggling feeling told me not to, that she was right about how I felt, and I knew that! I just didn't want to hurt Toru.

"Well it was nice meeting you Sage, I'm going to go find some more people to say hi to, bye!"

Walking off, Mina made her way over to Momo who was watching our conversation with an amused smirk. Urgh… why's socialising got to be so hard and complicated.

Feeling a hand on my shoulder all of a sudden my head snaps to the side in an instant as my body tenses. However, seeing who it was my tension washes away in an instant, and a smile makes its way onto my face.

"Nice job Sage! I didn't know you could run so fast, it was so cool!"

"That was amazing Toru, you completely crushed it!"

Falling into a nice casual conversation the two of us passed the time up to the next test with ease.

After a few minutes of us talking about basically whatever came to mind, Aizawa's voice interrupted us as he announces the next test.

Heading inside the nearby building we move onto the next test, a grip strength test, joining up with Momo and Mina we as a group move to the testing machines.

Stepping forward after a few of my classmates finish their tests I nervously grab a hold of the machine, breathing deeply I flex my muscles. Slowly I clench harder and harder on the handle, the number on the display slowly rising.

Eventually I can't move the machine anymore and let it go, breathing out slowly I look at my score.

541.2kg

Smiling at my score I look towards Shoji, he had gone just before me in this test and had a score of 540kg, which I was unsure I could beat.

Now, while I may be fast and super strong it doesn't translate well into direct tests such as grip strength, sure I can punch through a wall but that uses a combination of different muscles. I wasn't sure going into this test whether I could score top marks, but with the results of this test I was more confident, and could breathe a sigh of relief.

After that the rest of the tests passed by in a blur. After the grip strength test we moved on to a toe touch test, which I easily aced before moving on to sit-ups, which I once again aced.

Test after test I continued to score either first or second and slowly I came to a conclusion, practically no one here had ever trained to be a hero. Sure they were all fit and healthy but no one seemed to have put in much effort training to be a hero, and it kind of bummed me out.

Eventually though, after making it through the last test everything came full circle. Making my way out to the softball pitch after all the exercises I idly wondered whether Aizawa would want me to go again.

Waiting patiently, I watched as each and everyone of my new classmates stepped up to the circle and threw the ball with everything they had. One by one the scores piled up, 87m… 43m… 154m…

After a few minutes of these scores the final person, Izuku, stepped up to the circle. Standing in the circle he stood there for a few seconds looking off to the horizon with a distant yet thoughtful look.

Watching him just stand there for a few seconds was pretty boring, but he quickly got into position. Winding back his arm he flung it forward with all his strength… only for the ball to drop to the ground less than fifty metres from him.

I suppose that was likely Aizawa's doing, I vaguely recall him using his quirk to shut off One for All in the show. Glancing over to Aizawa to check if my guess was correct, I notice his hair floating up into the air like it was charged with static, while his normally docile scarf swirled around him in mesmerising patterns.

"You were going to use your useless quirk again weren't you. You're not ready. Were you going to break all your bones again like you did in the entrance exam?"

"No I-"

"No matter what your intentions are, you would be nothing more than a liability in battle as you are now."

Watching the whole interaction I couldn't help but wonder, what was Aizawa's scarf made of?

Mid way through his reprimand his scarf had shot out seemingly without any input from him, wrapped around Izuku, and dragged him back towards him in a fast swift motion. So how does it work?

However, my musing is cut short as Aizawa's scarf releases Izuku again and curls back around his neck.

Slightly disappointed I couldn't see him use it any more I watch Izuku instead. Reeling back his arm once more, he pulls it back and – oh look, it's that butterfly again.

Noticing the same multicoloured butterfly from earlier with its crystal like wings, I couldn't help but get distracted by the mesmerising patterns the sunlight casts as it drifts through the insects thin wings.

Flapping across the field unperturbed the butterfly approaches the edge of a building, where my gaze is drawn to the silhouette of a man watching us.

'Is that All Might?... yeah I think it is. Why is he just standing at the corner like a creep, there is so many better places he could watch from. Oh I know! This is the perfect opportunity to heal him and complete the quest I've had for a while now.'

Stepping away from the crowd and towards the hulking man I stop when he makes a frantic 'stay there' gesture. I guess that means I'll have to find him later to complete my quest, now how is the test going?

Spinning around I watch as Aizawa taps something into his phone and a few seconds later a holographic scoreboard appears in the air.

"It's to much effort reading out all your scores, so just check them yourselves. Also I lied, I won't be expelling anyone, it was a logical ruse to get you all to commit 100%."

Looking up at the list, my reading is cut short as a rabid chihuahua in the form of a human blasts passed me at high speed, loud explosions echoing off his palms.

"DEKU YOU BASTARD! TELL ME HOW YOU DID THAT OR YOU'RE DEAD YOU EXTRA!!"

Lunging for my green haired friend with his crackling palm outstretched and a feral grin on his face, Bakugo is cut off short by Aizawa's scarf snapping forward and wrapping him up.

"What the hell is this stupid scarf made of!"

Still clawing desperately towards Izuku while straining against his restraints, I'm surprised to see Bakugo doesn't even glance at our teacher, his one minded anger locked squarely on Broccoli boy.

"This 'stupid scarf' is a highly advanced capture weapon, designed by none other than principle Nezu. Now calm down, this behaviour isn't appropriate."

I could practically hear the mocking edge to Aizawa's words as he completely schools the living explosion, I do have to say though, he really seems to like his scarf.

Sighing aloud I ignore the last of Bakugo's petty squabbles as I finish reading through the leaderboard, making my way up the leaderboard I mentally read the names, Ida, Bakugo, Todoroki, Momo… and me.

Sure enough I got first place with a resounding lead, hearing a ding in my head my smile widens as I mentally prompt the quest panel to reappear.

Looking at the box for a second I ponder it a bit before closing the menu. At the moment I've got no way of hiding a strange item suddenly appearing in my hands so I'll wait till I get home.
