Chapter 17 - Chapter 16: The Flame Beneath

It had been two weeks since Sierra and I started training together. We had grown used to each other's company—sparring, learning, and talking. I was beginning to feel a strange bond forming between us, not just as rivals, but as partners.

Today, though, was different.

"Come on, Sera. Keep up!" Sierra's voice rang out, cutting through the air.

We were deep in the Forest of Twilight, a place known for both its magical beauty and its danger. Monsters roamed freely here, and the trees were enchanted to keep most of the wild beasts at bay. Still, there were dangers lurking, and that was why Sierra had brought me here.

Training, huh? I thought to myself as I followed her through the dense undergrowth. She had insisted we get some "real-world" experience, which meant facing off against monsters.

Sierra was already ten steps ahead, her flames leaving a trail as she ignited the brush beneath her feet, effortlessly sending the fire to clear a path for us.

I was still behind, struggling to maintain any semblance of control over my magic. I wasn't as adept at using fire as she was, but I was determined to learn.

After a few minutes of walking in silence, we reached a clearing. It was peaceful at first, the trees towering above us like silent sentinels. The sun filtered through the leaves, casting patterns of light on the ground.

But then, a low growl broke the stillness.

Sierra tensed, her hand instinctively going to the staff on her back. I looked around, scanning the forest for the source of the sound. And then, it appeared.

From the underbrush, a massive, wolf-like creature emerged. Its fur was pitch black, and its eyes glowed a faint crimson. It was a Twilight Beast, a monster native to these forests. Fierce and fast, they were dangerous for even seasoned mages to deal with.

"Get ready," Sierra said, her voice calm but intense. She took a step forward, her body igniting in flames. It was an impressive display—one I had seen many times, but never quite like this. The fire wrapped around her like a cloak, her control over it absolute.

I gripped my staff, my heart racing. "Are you sure I can handle this?"

She smirked. "You're not going to learn anything by standing around. Do your best."

Before I could respond, the beast lunged at us, its massive claws extended and dripping with venom. The creature was faster than I anticipated, and I barely managed to raise my staff in time to deflect its attack.

"Stay focused!" Sierra shouted, launching a blast of fire at the creature's chest. The beast howled in pain but didn't back off. It was enraged.

I quickly gathered my thoughts. My magic wasn't strong enough to go toe-to-toe with the beast directly, but I had learned a few tricks from Sierra. I focused, channeling my energy, and sent a blast of fire toward the creature's flank.

The monster staggered for a moment, distracted by the attack. But it wasn't enough to defeat it. It roared, baring its fangs, and turned back toward me, its glowing eyes filled with malice.

Sierra acted swiftly. She dashed toward the beast with incredible speed, flames bursting from her hands as she closed the distance. The beast swiped at her, but she twisted out of the way with fluid grace, her body moving like the fire she wielded.

"You'll have to do better than that," she taunted, her flames growing brighter and hotter.

The creature lunged again, but this time, Sierra was ready. She leapt into the air, a trail of fire following her as she plunged her staff into the beast's chest with a force that sent it reeling.

The beast screeched, smoke rising from its burning body. But it wasn't finished yet.

Sierra landed gracefully, her flames slowly fading as she wiped the sweat from her brow. "Not bad, but don't get too cocky," she said, her tone playful.

I nodded, grateful for her help but still frustrated at how outmatched I felt. I wasn't as skilled as she was, and every time I tried to keep up, I felt like I was falling short.

But there was something inside me, something I couldn't ignore. A flicker of determination.

I charged forward, gathering all the energy I had left. The beast turned its attention toward me once again, its eyes glowing with fury. I didn't hesitate. My staff glowed brightly as I unleashed every ounce of magic I had into a concentrated fireball.

It hit the creature square in the face, causing it to stagger back in pain. I took the opportunity to follow up with another attack—a series of smaller blasts aimed at its legs.

The creature howled, its fur scorched and smoking. Sierra watched me, a small smile tugging at her lips.

"That's the spirit," she said, clearly impressed. "But let's end this."

In a flash, she summoned a massive wave of fire, engulfing the beast in flames. It howled one last time before collapsing to the ground, its body reduced to ashes.

I stood there, panting, the adrenaline still coursing through my veins. It was over.

Sierra turned to me, her fiery gaze softened. "You did good, Sera."

I gave her a tired but genuine smile. "Thanks. Couldn't have done it without you."

She shook her head. "Don't sell yourself short. You've got potential. You just need to trust in your power."

With the Twilight Beast defeated, Sierra and I took a moment to catch our breath. I couldn't help but feel a sense of accomplishment. I wasn't as skilled as she was, but I was improving.

"So, you've got some fight in you after all," Sierra said, her voice teasing. "Maybe we make a good team."

I grinned. "Yeah, maybe we do."

Her eyes softened, and for a moment, I saw something more in her gaze. Something beyond just rivalry or training. Maybe it was admiration. Maybe it was something else entirely.

But before I could say anything, we were interrupted by a loud crash. The ground beneath us shook, and I heard a growl from behind us.

"What now?" I muttered, spinning around.

From the shadows of the forest, another creature emerged—this one much larger than the last. It had the body of a massive lizard, its scales glinting in the fading light, and its eyes were the color of molten lava.

Sierra grinned, a wild gleam in her eyes. "Ready for round two?"

I took a deep breath. This time, I wasn't just standing behind her. I was in this fight—with her.
