In this world, existence is threaded by the Mother River, a cosmic stream of spiritual energy that flows through all realms and beings. Cultivators learn to tap into its currents through a structured system of Sequences, progressing from Sequence 9 (the lowest) up to Sequence 0 (the pinnacle of mortal attainment).
Each Sequence signifies a deeper communion with the River. As one advances, the cultivator's body and spirit become stronger vessels to safely channel its vast power. Advancement requires precise rituals that align the soul with the River's flow. Each successful rite fortifies the bond; a misstep can tear the delicate connection, leaving the spirit scarred or wandering in confusion.
Through persistence and the purity of intent, cultivators gradually ascend the Sequences, mindful that each new level brings both enlightenment and peril.
Mortal Sequences (9 to 0)
• Sequence 9: The first threshold. At this stage a novice cultivator first awakens the faintest spark of the Mother River within their soul. A simple ritual (like meditating at a sacred spring under moonlight) might suffice to start the bond. Success grants a slight boost in physical strength or sensory perception, hinting at greater potential. Failure can disorient the spirit or cause a deep muddiness, showing how fragile the connection is at the beginning.
• Sequence 8: Deeper foundation. The practitioner now refines a small reserve of spiritual energy in their core. Rituals at this level are more complex — perhaps drawing energy from a waterfall or chanting an ancestral hymn by starlight. Success might sharpen reflexes or let the cultivator perform minor spells, while mistakes often leave lingering impurities in the soul that must be cleansed before continuing.
• Sequence 7: Solid foundations. The cultivator's body grows more robust to handle stronger currents. At this stage they may learn to transform internal energy into basic elemental attacks (such as wind blades or flame sparks) or to form a protective aura. Ceremonies often involve symbolic trials, like forging a weapon in spiritual fire or facing a vision of one's inner self. Achieving Sequence 7 is a clear sign of dedication; failure risks cracking the body's energy channels, requiring lengthy recovery.
• Sequence 6: Intermediate mastery. Disciples can refine much greater quantities of River energy at once, and their internal qi flows smoothly. Cultivation techniques become synchronized with nature's cycles (for example, aligning breathing with the rising and setting of the sun). Success might grant a glowing aura or the ability to sense nearby spiritual presences. If the ritual falters, it may shatter mental focus or cause partial corruption, requiring dedicated purification practices.
• Sequence 5: The midpoint. Now the cultivator is halfway to the mortal apex. The body is noticeably more resilient and agile, capable of feats beyond normal human limits. Rituals at this stage might involve surviving a trial by elemental flame or merging one's spirit with an ancient guardian beast. Success can heal moderate wounds or unleash powerful energy strikes. Mistakes often manifest as wild surges of power within the cultivator, which must be carefully tamed before advancement can continue.
• Sequence 4: The "foundation ring" grows. At this stage, practitioners start seeing glimpses of the River's cosmic landscape in dreams and visions. Their mind can briefly tap into distant places or the minds of other cultivators. Meditations deepen: some train under the starlight or atop open mountain peaks to feel the River's flow more clearly. Success brings heightened intuition and resistance to curses, while failure can warp perception or attract unwanted spirit attention.
• Sequence 3: Approaching the upper tiers. By now, the cultivator's soul is highly attuned. They can perform complex spells and form spiritual weapons (like ethereal swords or shields of light). Training often includes testing one's moral resolve or reconciling inner conflicts to fully purify the spirit. Success could allow temporary control over fierce elemental forces or blending with natural elements. A failed ritual here risks fragmenting the will, leaving the spirit vulnerable to outside influence.
• Sequence 2: Nearing the summit. The body and spirit glow with subtle light. Cultivators at this stage can store massive reserves of energy and even recover from near-death (though often at great cost). They frequently undergo vision quests to learn ancient secrets. Success at Sequence 2 grants immense longevity and near-impervious defenses. Even so, a mistake can be dire, permanently dulling the senses or poisoning the soul and making further advancement very difficult.
• Sequence 1: The final mortal threshold. Achieving Sequence 1 means the cultivator's body is legendary; they may heal swiftly, fly for brief periods, or tame storms with sheer will. Rituals at this level are profound and dangerous—imagine merging with a living sky-whale or transcribing divine scripture onto soul-stones. Success aligns the individual almost perfectly with the River's essence, unlocking reality-warping arts (such as creating sentient illusions or reshaping elements). Failure at this sacred stage can shatter a soul completely.
• Sequence 0: Peak mortal. The cultivator becomes a master of their own destiny. Their soul flows in perfect harmony with the Mother River, allowing them to perform true miracles—summon lightning strikes, commune with distant gods, or reshape landscapes with a thought. Even a single breath might alter the weather for miles. Once Sequence 0 is achieved, the cultivator stands at the brink of transcendence; completing the Sequence 0 ritual only opens the door to legendary realms beyond mortal ken.
Ascendant Stages/Sailors (Beyond Sequence 0)
After Sequence 0, cultivators enter realms of mythic power. Each post-Sequence stage transforms the very nature of their existence:
• Starry Sky: The first immortal stage. The practitioner's consciousness blossoms into a cosmic panorama. Countless stars burn within their mind, illuminating galaxies of thought. Now truly qualified to connect with the Mother River's deepest secrets and summon its tributary, they feel their soul entwined with the night sky. This stage often grants mastery over astral energy: manipulating starlight, navigating dream spaces, or casting spells inscribed by the constellations.
• Bright Moon: A stage of perfect clarity and expansion. The cultivator's aura shines like a full moon. Only at Bright Moon can one contract a second beast companion, for the spirit has grown vast enough to bond anew. The mind is clear as moonlight on still waters, reflecting hidden truths. With a second companion, the cultivator's power diversifies—combining one companion's strength with another's special abilities. Bright Moon masters wield illusions and revelation magics with flawless control. They are qualified to summon the Mother river's tributary through the boat evolved through the beast companion and the cultivator
• Eternal Sun: Radiant life-bearers. These cultivators burn with an ever-bright flame of vitality. Their presence warms and heals, pushing back darkness itself. An Eternal Sun master can reignite with fresh power at every dawn, never dimming. They excel in light and fire magics and often inspire courage in allies; their laughter can uproot nightmares and spark hope. Foes find it nearly impossible to bring them down, for each blow only rekindles their inner fire. They are qualified to fish in the Mother river.
• Monarch: Regal authority. At this stage, the cultivator's will governs lands. They command respect and loyalty from all life around them—animals bow, spirits pay homage. A Monarch can claim a territory and bind it to personal rule, altering its plants, weather, and resident spirits to their vision. Monarchs perform powerful "edict" spells, imposing order on the chaotic energies of nature. They often cultivate by leading and protecting their people, their sense of leadership deepening their bond to the River. They start to come into contact with the laws of the world, start to master them.
• True King: Cosmic sovereign. Beyond Monarch, a True King transcends worldly domains. They can influence entire continents at once. Their decisions echo like legend, inspiring heroes and even nations. True Kings can restructure reality on a grand scale with their laws: redirecting rivers with a thought, granting entire regions bountiful harvests, or awakening ancient mountain guardians. Their understanding of the River is so advanced that they tap into ancestral memories, knowing secrets lost to time. To become a king one must realize their own laws that radiate the world and forms a court.
• Saint: Spirit incarnate. The Saint stage is the pinnacle of purity and enlightenment. Saints live as exemplars of virtue, wisdom, or cosmic law. Their bodies often radiate serene light and their presence brings peace; even in combat, their strikes feel like sacred duties rather than acts of vengeance. Saints achieve miracles of the spirit: instantly cleansing polluted lands, blessing multitudes with prosperity, or pacifying warring armies with compassion. They sense the Mother River not just around them, but flowing through all hearts—feeling the pulse of creation in every living being. They are in harmony with the world.
• Emperor: World-builder. Emperors are culture-makers on a grand scale, embodying empire and destiny. At this level, one shapes myth itself: scribing runes in the air that alter physics, declaring edicts that manifest miracles across the lands, or forging entirely new elements of creation. Their lifespans can span millennia, watching whole civilizations rise and fall under their influence. An Emperor's word can reshape reality—perhaps raising mountains or parting oceans with intent. They often cultivate through massive undertakings (forging cities, founding faiths, or leading crusades), each great achievement tying them more deeply to the River's flow. The court fully matures and becomes an empire dominating everything with a thought.
• God / Great One: Divine being. To become a God is to live among legends. A God wields fundamental forces and can birth stars with a thought. To mortals below, a God's power is innate and absolute; they need no ritual to bend matter. Gods might summon lightning from empty skies, weave fate's threads by gesture, or walk invisibly among people. They perceive the Mother River as a fellow life—conversing with it as an equal rather than something to be summoned or controlled. The empire becomes a divine empire and a world of its own, so they not tolerated by the world and the pollution they radiate.
• Supreme / Old One: Cosmic Ancient. Supreme beings are near-unknowable and timeless. They predate the memory of the world. Existing partly on planes beyond mortal sight, they may appear differently to every observer. A single whisper from an Old One can birth or undo entire realities. Time and space are mere tools to them: they might witness past and future simultaneously, or fold dimensions as easily as ripples. Myths say the universe's deepest mysteries are mundane to these immortals.
• Eternals: Embodiment of Forever. Eternals are the essence of eternity itself. They live without true birth or death, embodying cosmic concepts (like the turning of ages or the breath of worlds). Their power is measured not in spells or might, but in pure being. An Eternal's thoughts might be slow as centuries or instant across galaxies. To mortals they seem incomprehensible—eternity given form—but to themselves, they are simply home in the endless flow of existence.
• Taboo: Forbidden Masters. Taboo cultivators have shattered the universe's rules. They exist outside normal law; some say their souls touch multiple worlds at once. Achieving Taboo means embracing depths of the Mother River deemed too dangerous—like blending one's essence with the void between worlds or using rituals mortals do not dare. Legends speak of Taboo beings with unimaginable fates: gods who went mad, immortals who tore holes in reality, or heroes who became curses. Reaching the Taboo stage means stepping beyond the map of creation itself; many never return, and the few surviving tales of them are whispered with awe and fear.
• Illusory Transcendent: Beyond everything. These rare souls have merged completely with illusion and truth. They can make fantasies real and make reality feel like a dream. If they wish, they become uncatchable phantoms; if they will it, all is simply as they imagine. Even gods treat them with caution. Illusory Transcendents know the ultimate secret: that existence is as fluid as perception. No one truly knows if anything lies
• beyond this stage, for someone at this height might already be the Mother River itself.
