Chapter 15 - Chapter 15 – Echoes of the Forgotten Flame

Moonlight filtered through the cracked stone window of the Obsidian Pact dormitory. The silence between Otoku and Arthelia stretched, thick with unspoken memories and guarded truths.

Otoku narrowed his eyes. "You said you've died before."

Arthelia's expression didn't change. "More than once."

She sat on the edge of the desk, her blindfold catching the silvery glow of mana-laced night.

"I remember fire. A throne that burned. And a voice—always whispering… telling me to rise again."

Otoku felt the chill crawl down his spine. That dream… the voice. I've heard it too.

He stepped forward, slow and measured. "What brought you back?"

Arthelia tilted her head. "A fragment of my soul was sealed into something called the Nexus Vault. The Order said I was chosen by fate, but I think I was a mistake they couldn't erase."

Otoku's fingers clenched. "You mentioned a vault. The instructors did too. They think someone will awaken it soon."

Arthelia smiled faintly. "They're afraid of it. Because inside the Vault… lies the First Flame—a soul so old it's begun to burn through time itself."

Otoku's vision blurred for a moment—flashes of another life: crimson skies, chains wrapped around a boy's hands, a blade piercing his heart… and a throne of ash.

He snapped out of it. "Why are you telling me this?"

"Because you're like me," she whispered. "Something about your aura… it's unstable. Like it's been stitched together. You've died too, haven't you?"

Otoku didn't answer. The truth wasn't safe—not yet.

Instead, he asked, "Why stay in the Obsidian Pact?"

She shrugged. "Secrets protect me better than swords. And here… I'm not alone."

Before she could say more, the warning bell tolled—three times. Not for class. Not for curfew.

An intruder.

A second-year barged into the room, face pale.

"The western gate was breached—by something not human."

Arthelia stood quickly. "It's starting."

Otoku grabbed his blade. "What is?"

She glanced over her shoulder, blindfold fluttering.

"The cycle. The loop. The Rebirth of Flame… is beginning again."
