Chapter 64 - Improvised (Magic?) Weapons 2

Perhaps if someone saw this, they might ask things like: wasn't enchanting supposed to increase a weapon's attack? Wasn't forging cold even possible? Wouldn't something made cold be more fragile? Wouldn't the chances of success only be halved? Would the magic's effect be applied? etc.

This time I would answer all these questions with a resounding no. It's not quite like that.

Even though it's basic information, the knowledge of enchanting objects makes it clear that: the ability isn't limited to just attack or defense. The problem is a person being able to use [Enchant] to do many things, creating perpetual light for example, a tap or shower that always has hot water, etc.

Every person has the capacity to do this.

And to have the capacity to do many things besides enchanting and enhancing weapon attack, you would need: a lot of mana, a lot of practice, a concrete image of what you want, the magic/spells and practical materials, and a dose of luck (an ability above level 1 would also be very useful).

The chances of successfully enchanting increase if you made the object you want to enchant yourself, using the charm little by little during the crafting process. In my case, I didn't make the objects, but I'm trying to make a new one from them. Soooo, technically the improved chances still applied(?).

And perhaps that's why it worked.

I don't know how long I stared at the "spear" I had made, but after I finished I couldn't help but feel proud.

The tip was firmly attached as if the knife had been welded to the wooden shaft; the blade itself seemed to have been coated with a light layer of ice. Making the tip slightly larger and (even from an amateur's point of view) sharper.

The point where the two halves of the pool cues joined was also solid as a stone, perhaps because I had used an ice magic enchantment in the center, forming an ice crystal that seemed to shimmer in a light blue tone. From both this ice crystal and the point where the knife joined the shaft, some snowflake-like patterns ran along the handle, giving the whole thing a somewhat mystical appearance.

Despite the ice, it wasn't exactly cold to the touch; it was actually quite normal. But I could also feel a slight icy breeze coming from it.

Even though it was somewhat carelessly made, it was a beautiful weapon; my concern was whether it would withstand a serious fight.

I was about to try some moves with it, but as soon as I tried to take a step, I ended up falling on my backside.

*Tlingh tlinnnngh*

Only when I was on the ground and the spear slipped from my hands did I realize how tired I was, my changed clothes were covered in sweat, and my mana...

[MP: 20/160]

Almost exhausted again, but I still managed to make (even though poorly) a magic weapon. I'm sure if this were a game there would have been a little tune saying I unlocked an achievement, aahhhh what a shame.

*Fric Fric... Pschh!*

"Damn it."

Only now do I remember I wasn't alone upstairs.

"Ah, finally back, huh. You certainly enjoyed your time making your new toy."

I just stared at my dear little sister sitting on one of the sofas covered in leaves and vines with a plate in her lap, peeling and eating a bright red orange. Alongside the turtles, Lumi and Impeto... well, I don't really remember if he had left or not, but they were all around her. Some had pieces of orange in front of them while others waited for her to finish peeling.

*Fric fric.*

"Ahhmmmm, ~hhhmmmm~ so sweet."

With this somewhat surreal vision, something that was becoming worryingly normal in my life, I could only think...

'Where did this come from?'

(~15 to 20 minutes later~)

'Okay, everything's ready.'

Ice spear ready and strapped to my back, last minimally usable bow in the [item box] along with the last 15 arrows, clothes that are easy to move in but still provide minimal protection put on. "Permanent" weapons and protection ready.

Usable and disposable items:

• Sheets and bandages in case something happens (sheets to be torn and used as emergency bandages), ready.

• Water bottles with a mixture of Impeto's blood, chicken blood, and even Lumi's blood (only 3 bottles so nobody ends up anemic), ready.

• Stockpile of oranges to replenish blood sugar (10 small, mouth-sized, peeled oranges), ready.

• Some crackers, regular oranges, water, eggs, and other food for mom and dad, ready.

• Items that mom and dad asked for, more than ready.

Okay, everything's fine.

"Hopefully we'll be back before nightfall, otherwise I think I'll have to spend the night with them amidst a horde of monsters. Will you and the others be able to manage?"

"Pfft, please, who do you think was taking care of the house while you were getting your beauty sleep?"

She said, puffing out her chest proudly.

"Pomo and the chickens, you spent a good part of the time sleeping in your room with Beth and Nawa."

I instinctively ducked down and a ball of wind passed right where my head had been seconds before.

"Do you want to rephrase that now or later?"

She asked, still with her chest puffed out but with a second, slightly green sphere of wind in one hand.

"I take back everything I said and thank you for taking care of me and the others all this time."

I quickly replied, standing at attention.

"Better."

She dissipated the sphere and lowered her chest, looking at me with a serious expression.

"Be very careful out there. Now you're going alone to help Mom and Dad, you understand that, right? And you'll still be carrying the heavy [item box], which will slow you down, so you have to be very careful and think carefully before getting into a fight, okay?"

"Yes, I know, don't worry, I already said I'll be running and on the rooftops most of the time. Most of the birds haven't appeared yet, and I doubt all the animals have stayed like Lumi and Nawa."

I replied with a small, varied touch, but it didn't work this time. She still looked worried.

"Maybe it would be better if Beth went with you; she could hide in the hood of one of your coats or something."

"That would only slow me down. No offense, Beth."

I was sure she was going to throw another water balloon if I didn't say that.

"Beth is already too big for a turtle, besides, if I took her, I'd have to worry about walking slower so she wouldn't fall, etc."

Mari understood what I said, but I still wasn't convinced. I could see she was about to suggest something else, but I cut her off by raising my hand.

"Just one... but since I basically didn't do much, it wasn't so bad. I also received some experience for helping Pomo kill and hinder the kobolds from before."

She made a few gestures and soon her status appeared to me.

"But you haven't allocated any points or acquired any new abilities yet? Didn't you say it's better to allocate points quickly?"

"If you're going to use them soon, then yes. Which isn't my case."

She said with a smug tone, but it was obvious it was just a way for her to try and deflect the worry she felt.

I approached and hugged her. Unlike most other times when she pushed me away because she didn't like hugs (at least not mine), this time she just stood there and let me hug her.

"It's okay, we'll all go back and then decide what to do. I promise."

"...okay."

She returned the hug, making it very obvious to me how worried she was.
