Chapter 23 - Chapter 23: An Unexpected Call from Pallet Town

The road back to Dawn Valley was quiet as Kai and his small group returned from Mesagoza. Chimchar rode happily on Kai's shoulder, licking the last traces of Poképuff from his fingers, while the two Charcadet marched proudly, swinging their arms like little soldiers.

Kai carried two heavy bags filled with supplies — training gear, Pokéblock ingredients, and fresh berries. The ranch came into view just as the sun began to dip, casting the valley in hues of gold and violet.

He pushed open the gate, ushered the Charcadet and Chimchar inside, and set the bags down on the porch. Just as he exhaled to relax, the ranch house's communicator began to beep.

Kai frowned lightly. Only a few people had this private channel.

Walking over, he tapped the receiver.

A familiar, warm voice greeted him: Professor Oak.

"Kai, my boy! I hope I'm not catching you at a bad time."

Kai's eyes softened slightly. "Never, Professor. What's going on?"

Prof. Oak chuckled a little, though there was an underlying seriousness to his voice.

"I would very much like you to bring Iron Thorns to Pallet Town. I want to study it personally — its physiology, energy patterns, and any anomalies from the time distortion."

Kai leaned back against the wall, thinking. A trip to Kanto… it had been a long time. Longer still since he had seen Prof. Oak in person.

"I wouldn't ask if it weren't important," Prof. Oak added. "The research could help many trainers and researchers understand these Paradox Pokémon better. I'll make it easy for you — a private visit, no public fuss."

There was a pause before Kai answered.

"…Alright. I'll come."

Prof. Oak's tone warmed with clear affection. "Good, good! I'll prepare the lab for you. Come whenever you're ready. And Kai—" he hesitated a little before continuing, "I'm proud of you, son. Always have been. Be careful out there."

A rare, faint smile crossed Kai's lips.

"I will, Professor. See you soon."

The call ended.

Kai stood in the fading light for a moment, then looked toward the ranch where his Pokémon were already playing in the open fields.

A journey back to Kanto… a reunion with Prof. Oak… and perhaps, a new chapter waiting to unfold.

He'd leave soon — but tonight, he would enjoy the quiet peace of home just a little longer.
