Chapter 16 - Preparing for Gym Battle

Aiden awoke to the soft chirp of a nearby Pidgey outside the window, its call a gentle reminder that the world had already stirred to life. The cool morning air filtered in through the cracks of the wooden blinds, casting delicate beams of sunlight across the floor of the small room in the Pokémon Center.

He blinked, squinting at the clock beside him. It was still early—just past dawn—but his body was already alert, eager to begin the day. The sleepiness he'd felt the night before had been replaced by a calm determination. Today was the day. Today, he would face Gym Leader Gareth of Valora City and take one step closer to becoming a true Pokémon Trainer.

The room was small but cozy, furnished simply with a bed, a chair, and a desk cluttered with maps and research notes. His Pokémon's Poké Balls rested on the nightstand beside him, their small, familiar shapes a constant presence in his mind as he reached out to grab them.

He rose from the bed and stretched, letting out a deep breath. His body ached from the long journey and the previous day's training, but there was no time to waste. The day ahead would be demanding, and he needed to make sure his Pokémon were in peak condition.

Aiden walked over to the Poké Balls. The soft glow of light shimmered across their surfaces as he tapped each one to release its respective occupant. Sneasel was the first to appear, its sleek body materializing in a flash of light.

The Ice/Dark-type immediately flicked its head up, sharp eyes scanning the room. It stretched lazily, flexing its claws as though it had already been awake for hours, despite the early hour. Aiden smiled as he approached, brushing a hand over Sneasel's dark fur.

"Morning, Sneasel. Ready for today?" he asked softly, even though he knew the Pokémon would offer little in response. Sneasel wasn't the type to speak, but the understanding between them had been built through action, not words. It gave a quiet, low growl in acknowledgment, its sharp gaze fixed on Aiden with a quiet intensity.

"Stay focused, alright? This battle's going to be tough," Aiden said, his voice steady but his heart racing.

Sneasel's response was an indifferent flick of its tail before it sauntered off to a corner of the room to stretch its limbs further, ready for the challenges ahead.

Aiden then moved to the next Poké Ball, releasing Zubat into the space. The small bat Pokémon materialized, fluttering quickly to hover near Aiden's head, its wings beating softly against the air. Its large eyes blinked open as it took in its surroundings, a small chirp escaping from its throat.

"Morning, Zubat. Big day ahead," Aiden murmured, a slight grin tugging at his lips. Zubat didn't seem as intense as Sneasel, but the bat Pokémon was a fighter, and Aiden knew that.

Zubat chirped happily and nuzzled against his cheek, almost affectionately, before flying in a tight circle around his head. Aiden couldn't help but laugh, reaching up to gently guide Zubat to land on his shoulder. The weight of the Pokémon's small form was comforting, and its bright eyes seemed full of energy.

"Let's do our best today. Stay sharp, alright?" Aiden whispered. Zubat gave another chirp in reply, as if saying 'I'm ready.'

Next, he released Ponyta. The fiery horse Pokémon appeared in a burst of light, flames flickering from its mane and tail as it shook itself free from the confines of the Poké Ball. Ponyta landed gracefully on the floor, her fiery mane crackling with energy as she tossed her head proudly. The warmth radiating off her felt comforting, like a steady flame in the cold morning air.

"Morning, Ponyta. You ready for the battle today?" Aiden asked, his voice soft yet encouraging. He knew she wasn't one for hesitation. Ponyta was eager for every challenge, her fiery nature always looking for a chance to prove herself.

Ponyta whinnied softly, shaking her head with a burst of small embers from her mane, as if she was already raring to go. Aiden smiled warmly and patted her gently on the shoulder. "Take it easy today. We don't need to burn ourselves out too quickly."

Ponyta nodded, a sharp snort of agreement escaping her. Despite her youthful enthusiasm, Aiden knew Ponyta could sometimes be reckless in battle. Today, he would need to keep her focused.

Finally, he released Budew, the tiny Grass/Poison-type Pokémon. Budew materialized in a soft, green glow, hovering in the air as it looked around curiously. The small flower Pokémon's round eyes blinked at Aiden with innocent wonder.

"Good morning, Budew. You're still a bit young for today's battle, but we'll train more when we get back," Aiden said, his voice tender as he squatted down to Budew's level.

Budew chirped softly, looking up at Aiden with trust. Despite its youth and inexperience, it had a spirit that matched the rest of the team. Budew's tiny leaves fluttered as it tilted its head, clearly eager to be part of the action.

"You're not forgotten," Aiden added with a grin. "Just not today. You've got some growing to do before we can take on a Gym Leader."

With a quiet sigh, he recalled Budew to its Poké Ball, leaving it to rest for the day.

Aiden moved toward the dining hall, where a small breakfast had already been laid out for Trainers and their Pokémon. He grabbed a tray, opting for a simple meal of scrambled eggs, toast, and fruit. It was a modest breakfast, but the food was warm, fresh, and exactly what he needed.

The dining area was bustling with Trainers and their Pokémon. Some sat together, while others stood in small groups, preparing for their respective challenges. Aiden found a quiet corner by the window and sat down, his Pokémon gathering around him.

He placed a small bowl of Pokémon food in front of Sneasel, Zubat, Budew and Ponyta, each one beginning to eat with varying levels of focus. Sneasel was efficient, barely glancing at the food before devouring it with calculated precision. Zubat flitted between bites, clearly still excited about the upcoming battle, while Ponyta took her time, nibbling thoughtfully as if savoring the moment before the battle.

Aiden kept his eyes on them, his mind racing as he absentmindedly ate his own breakfast. He knew the Gym Battle today would be a serious test. Gym Leader Gareth had built his reputation around Bug-types, but it wasn't just about typing. Gareth was known for his strategies, his ability to adapt in the heat of battle.

He had spent the previous night reviewing his Pokémon's strengths and weaknesses, trying to predict what kind of battle it would be. Would Sneasel's speed be enough to outpace Gareth's unpredictable tactics? Could Zubat's agility counter the larger, bulkier Bug-types? Would Ponyta's fire be enough to burn through the resilience of the opposing team?

Aiden's thoughts drifted as he absentmindedly fed his Pokémon, watching them interact with each other. Despite the nervousness, despite the unknowns ahead, he felt a bond with his Pokémon that gave him confidence.

Once breakfast was finished, Aiden stood and gave each of his Pokémon a final check. He spoke quietly to Sneasel, Zubat, and Ponyta, reaffirming the trust they had in each other.

"I know it's going to be tough, but we'll get through this together," Aiden said, his voice steady as he recalled his Pokémon one by one into their Poké Balls.

He could feel the weight of each Poké Ball in his hands as he tucked them into his jacket pocket. Each Pokémon, each friend, was a part of him now.

Aiden stood tall, his resolve firming with each passing moment. The battle ahead was uncertain, but he was ready. He felt the familiar rush of adrenaline, the anticipation that came with every challenge. His Pokémon had prepared, and now, so had he.

With one final glance around the Pokémon Center, he exited, heading toward the Gym.
