Chapter 3 - Wings

I awoke with a deep searing pain ripping through my back.

I felt my skin stretch out and try to contain sharp bone with all it's might. It was dark, perhaps around midnight.

And it hurt.

Pain. All I felt was pain. My teeth crashed against eachother, gritting and trying their very best to contain a scream, before I brought my hands to my shoulders and my nails began to dig deep into my flash.

I scratched away at my back, hoping for the pain to stop and the wings to just come out already, but it wasn't that easy.

I taste blood as my gums start to hurt a bit from how hard I was gritting them.

And then, an explosion.

I heard the sounds of skin and muscles ripping, a part of my body tearing through another. Cold air instantly attacked the exposed muscles, dust wafting into the wound and pain spreading through me.

I felt as if I was going to be sick, however that would be the worst thing to do now. I need to eat and recover my energy.

I move over to the box I had brought back inside, opening it up and biting down on the head of the bunny like a savage.

I kept devouring, not even leaving bones as I crushed them with my teeth and swallowed the shards.

As I did, I felt the burning slowly begin to stop, my wounds regenerating.

By the time I had regained my sense of self, I took deep, shaky breaths before trying to calm myself.

There was blood all over my back and all over the floor as well, it was simply covered in the red thick liquid.

It had seeped around to my chest as well. Hopefully my clothes only had some splash on the edge, so it wasn't that bad.

I began to feel out my back, taking a breath as the sensation of calmness washed over me.

The wings were large, covered in tendons and blood coated feathers, the tips fading to a cool grey, two bumps near the edges.

I close my eyes, feeling my way through every new muscle in my body before opening my eyes. Not the ones on my face. No, the ones on my wings.

Those two bumps were actually closed eyes. As I open them, I feel slightly nauseous As my field of vision expands rapidly, nearly approaching a full 360° that made my head swirl.

The space was too enclosed to do anything like flight, so I had to leave the building.

I stretched out my wings fanning them out to their full length, each wing being about as tall as me, with a height of around from the floor to my waist area.

I flapped them, slowly at first to get a feel for the new appendages and how they influenced the balance of my body.

Then I sped up. Gusts of cold wind erupted as if there was a hurricane centralized right at my location. My hair fluttered, as bits of my flesh got thrown off the wings. I crouched down, my wings continuing to flap before I jump up. The added help from my legs and the strength of my wings allowed to me to launch myself far over the treeline and gave me a beautiful view of the surroundings.

In the dead of night, no one could spot me, as I observed how the nearby town was shining. Strange lights emitting from almost every building, the town still alive despite the lack of sunlight.

I had never seen such a thing before.

How intrueging…

Where are the flames? Last time I came by a town, it was covered in a black smog and the humans had worked in factories, I wonder what's changed?

I dashed out, my wings flapping at an extreme pace to allow me to reach the city in a very little amount of time. Though it wasn't like it was all that far to begin with.

From my vantage point, I also spotted a river nearby the structure I was staying at, so I'll use that when I come back.

Anyway, as I flew, I spotted large square concrete columns jut out from the ground, windows spaced evenly across its faces. I flew up to one of them, looking inside to see a strange orb of light at the roof of the room.

Living quarters, a kitchen, a lavatory and a balcony. These are all homes?

How peculiar…

I return home. This was not something to be doing, I might get caught and that isn't exactly ideal.

I don't bother to wash up, the fatigue from not sleeping all that much and having sprouted wings causing a deep drowsiness.

I was able to use my wings to cradle my body to retain body heat which was a nice added benefit of them.

But I immediately noticed how… Sticky, my body was.

Because of the blood coating me, I was incredibly uncomfortable and unwilling to sleep.

Taking a breath, I leave the structure I was in and make my way to the river I had spotted previously.

Removing my clothes, I throw them aside and dip myself in the water to wash off. It was freezing cold, but that didn't stop my advance, blood stained the water red as it flowed away from the town out further into the forest.

My wings were a little easier to clean than normal. This body is much more flexible than my previous one, allowing me to reach behind my back to scrub all the way at the base of the wings.

I froze when my fingers touched exposed flesh, only to resume, mapping out the area where I felt pain in order to avoid those areas.

They were healing already.

I had used a lot of energy to wander around looking for this body since my previous one had died far away from any civilization, which means currently my regeneration isn't even a fraction of what it was previously.

How annoying. Before, this would heal in less than a second, now I think it'll take all night.

Finishing up, I decide to wash the blood off my clothes as well before returning to bed.

I needed to hang up my clothes to let them dry, so I had to sleep naked today as well unfortunately…

It'll be fine. I sigh and actually head to bed this time around.
