Chapter 5 - CHAPTER 5: SYLVIA’S MISERY

Twenty-five years ago, Dion was born from the forced union of Sylvia Giliana and Julius Eris.

about Fifty years ago, the church's influence was slowly declining due to the absence of a saint for 200 years. The former pope, plagued by paranoia, searched desperately for a saint. Typically, a person's powers fully develop by the age of twelve, determining their class, and becoming a saint is no exception. The pope's short temper led him to measure children ranging in age from mere days old to eleven, despite their incomplete powers. He gathered children with the potential to be saints, officially obtaining those from noble families while kidnapping those from lower-status families. Sylvia was also forcibly taken from her commoner parents at just eight months old and later her parents was killed due to resisting . She spent her life in the church alongside Julius, the former pope's son, and they were considered childhood friends.

Young Julius had a temper and regarded himself highly, displaying a somewhat twisted nature. Yet, one person warmed his heart, and that was Sylvia. His affection for her deepened as they grew older, and he even entertained thoughts of locking Sylvia away if she was not the saint. Quite severe thinking for a ten-year-old. The testing process was shorten when the pope developed a drug that forced the rapid development of a child's powers, albeit with several dangerous side effects, including heart strain and coughing up blood. Sylvia was administered this drug from infancy, but thanks to Julius, who carefully controlled the dosage she received when they became friends, she suffered only minimal harm. It took seven years for Sylvia to completely develop her powers, after which she was tested. Fortunately for Julius, Sylvia turned out to be the saintess, allowing her to remain in the church with him.

As they grew closer, Julius's obsession deepened, even though Sylvia treated him as family. Sylvia continually battled dark magicians, leading to overexertion of her powers. The effects of the drug she had taken began to manifest, leaving her weak. The former pope was angered but had no choice but to allow Sylvia to rest. During her recovery, she befriended a paladin of similar age. When Julius discovered this, jealousy consumed him, twisting his mind further. One night, while delivering medicine to Sylvia, he tainted it with an aphrodisiac. He forced himself upon her, declaring how he had loved her all along and that she belonged to him. Feeling betrayed and disgusted, Sylvia could not comprehend how the person she treated as family could do this to her. That day, their relationship changed forever.

Not long after, Julius dismissed Sylvia's paladin friend while she was still traumatized. The pope died, he ascended to the position of the new pope due to his rank as the highest priest. Following in his father's footsteps, he manipulated Sylvia into becoming his puppet, stripping her of her authority as a saint and relegating her to the role of a decoration. He feared her condition might worsen if she continued to fight on the front lines. To further his control, he retrieved an artifact capable of taking away a saint's powers, with the help of Lumos, the archmage. This shattered Sylvia's hopes of escape, in this way she became a wilted flower. The pope visited her every day, treating her like his property while whispering sweet words to her. Each of his caresses made Sylvia feel increasingly sick. She no longer viewed Julius as family not even a friend, seeing him instead as a disgusting bastard who had defiled her.

Amidst this turmoil, Sylvia discovered she was pregnant with Julius's child, despite being given contraceptives by him. She couldn't take away the child life, as it was also hers, and more importantly her only remaining family. When Julius learned of her pregnancy, he sought to eliminate the child, for while a priest or pope could marry, a saint could not, according to the church's rules and the orders of Goddess Leticia, which forbade any one from touching her appointed saintess. If the scandal of the pope fathering a child with the saintess were to break, it could lead to his downfall and loss of life. However, Sylvia fell to her knees and begged him for the first time to allow the child to live, promising to obey him completely. After careful consideration, Julius agreed to hide the saint's pregnancy from everyone.

But a dreadful truth revealed itself when Sylvia gave birth, the child was enveloped in a swirling miasma of dark magic.
