The sky had forgotten how to cry.
For three days now, it remained dull and unmoving—a grey sheet stretched across the heavens, as though mourning with the kingdom. The once-bright banners that lined the capital walls fluttered wearily, their colors muted by ash and war-torn smoke. It was over, and yet… nothing truly felt finished.
Elira stood atop the restored southern tower, her cloak swept by a low wind. From there, she could see the remnants of the old army grounds—now dotted with healers, tents, and pyres. Smoke spiraled skyward like whispered prayers. Each flame carried the name of someone who wouldn't return.
"We won," she said quietly, as if saying it aloud would finally make her believe it.
"Yes, but at what cost?" murmured Kael, stepping beside her.
