Chapter 46 - Chapter 45: The Self That Should Not Exist

The chained figure laughed softly.

It wasn't loud. It wasn't cruel.

It was worse.

Familiar.

Seraphina stared at it, unable to move.

The face was hers—same eyes, same lips, same expression—but wrong in a way she couldn't immediately explain. Like a reflection that had learned to lie.

"I knew you'd hesitate," the chained Seraphina said gently.

Seraphina's voice came out strained. "What are you?"

The chained version tilted its head. Chains clinked with every small movement, carved with glowing seals that pulsed like heartbeats.

"I am what was removed," it replied. "The part of you this world refused to accept."

A sharp pain flickered through Seraphina's chest.

Memories surged again—but fragmented.

Not just illusion this time.

Something deeper.

A life where she never became Empress.

A life where she was never reborn.

A life where she stayed dead.

She staggered back.

"No… I chose this life."

The chained version smiled sadly.

"No. You were placed into it."

The Crown of Eclipse pulsed behind them, reacting to both of their presences.

Like it couldn't decide which one was real.

---

Above the ruins, the sky split further.

Evelyne watched the fracture with narrowed eyes.

Lucien and Kaelen fought desperately against the collapsing barrier, but something stronger than magic held them back.

Kaelen shouted, "Seraphina is still inside!"

Evelyne's expression darkened slightly.

"She should not have reached that chamber."

Lucien narrowed his gaze at her. "What did you do to her?"

Evelyne didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she whispered—

"I didn't do anything."

A pause.

Then softer:

"The Crown remembers what she forgot."

---

Inside the ruins, Seraphina forced herself to breathe.

"You're trying to confuse me," she said.

The chained version shook its head.

"I'm trying to complete you."

It lifted its bound hands slightly.

"The reason you feel two souls inside you… light and shadow… is because you were split."

Seraphina's eyes narrowed.

"By who?"

The chained version looked at her for a long moment.

Then answered:

"By yourself."

Silence.

Even the ruins seemed to pause.

Seraphina stepped forward slowly.

"That doesn't make sense."

The chained version's smile faded.

"Before this world became a story… you were not meant to exist in it. You broke the boundary between lives. The Crown of Eclipse was created to fix that fracture."

The Crown pulsed harder.

Chains rattled.

Seraphina's hands clenched.

"So what am I supposed to be?"

The chained version leaned forward as much as the seals allowed.

"You are the version that survived the rewrite."

A beat.

"And I am the version that didn't."

---

Suddenly—

The chains shattered slightly.

A crack of light burst through the seals.

The ruins trembled violently.

A deep voice echoed from nowhere and everywhere:

"FRACTURE DETECTED."

The Crown reacted instantly, shooting dark light into the air.

And Seraphina saw it.

The truth beneath everything.

Not Evelyne.

Not the heroine.

Not the kingdom.

But something larger.

A system.

A correction force.

A world trying to "fix" what had gone wrong.

Kaelen's voice echoed faintly from outside, distorted: "Seraphina! Get out of there!"

Lucien followed: "The ruins are collapsing!"

But Seraphina couldn't move.

Because the chained version was fading.

Slowly.

Like it was being deleted.

"Wait!" Seraphina stepped forward. "Don't disappear!"

The chained version smiled faintly.

"It's too late. The Crown chose you."

A pause.

Then softer:

"But I always believed you would."

The chains snapped.

Light swallowed the figure completely.

And in its place—

only a single black feather fell into Seraphina's hands.

---

The Crown of Eclipse exploded with energy.

The entire ruin structure began collapsing.

Seraphina turned toward the floating crown.

For the first time—

she understood.

This wasn't power.

This was correction.

A system trying to decide which version of her should exist.

Outside, Evelyne's eyes widened slightly.

"…So it has begun."

Kaelen broke through the barrier at last. "Seraphina!"

Lucien followed, grabbing her arm. "We have to leave NOW!"

But Seraphina didn't move.

She looked at the Crown.

Then at the feather.

Then at the collapsing sky above.

And finally—

she smiled.

A calm, dangerous smile.

"I understand now."

Kaelen shouted, "Understand what?!"

Seraphina raised her hand slowly.

Light and shadow merged around her again—but this time, differently.

Balanced.

Stable.

"I was never supposed to choose between light and darkness," she said quietly.

"I was supposed to overwrite the choice itself."

The Crown of Eclipse froze midair.

For the first time…

it hesitated.

And somewhere far beyond the world—

something noticed her fully.
