Chapter 44 - Chapter 43: The Crown Beneath the Ruins

The night sky over the northern mountains was unnaturally still.

No wind moved. No birds called. Even the snow seemed frozen in hesitation, as if the world itself was holding its breath.

Seraphina stood at the edge of Eldrin's sanctuary, her cloak fluttering slightly despite the absence of wind. The silver glow around her fingers had not faded since the moment she made her decision.

"We leave now," she said.

Kaelen checked his blade. "The ruins are three days away through cursed terrain. If Evelyne has already reached the Crown of Eclipse…"

"She hasn't," Lucien interrupted calmly, tightening the straps on his gear. "If she had it, we'd already feel the kingdom breaking apart."

Eldrin stepped forward slowly, his aged eyes heavy with meaning.

"You underestimate what she's willing to sacrifice."

Seraphina met his gaze. "And you underestimate what I've already lost."

A silence followed—sharp, meaningful.

Then Eldrin finally nodded.

"Then go. But remember—once you enter the northern ruins, the seal of truth will activate. There, illusions cannot survive."

Kaelen frowned slightly. "Illusions?"

Eldrin's voice lowered.

"Not all lies are spoken. Some are lived."

---

They departed before dawn.

The forest paths twisted strangely the deeper they went, as if reality itself was bending away from them. Trees stood too still. Shadows lingered too long.

On the second day, the Divine Beast appeared without warning.

Its massive form emerged from the mist, but this time it was not calm.

It growled.

Low. Warning. Protective.

Seraphina stepped forward. "What is it sensing?"

Lucien's hand went to his weapon. "Something is following us."

Kaelen turned sharply. "We've been tracked since the sanctuary."

A soft clap echoed through the trees.

Once.

Twice.

Then silence again.

And then—

A voice.

"My, my… the villainess walks with such confidence now."

Seraphina's eyes sharpened instantly.

From the shadows, Evelyne stepped forward.

Dressed in white like always. Smiling like always.

But her presence… was different.

Heavier.

More unstable.

Behind her stood masked knights and a floating fragment of black crystal—the aura of the Crown of Eclipse's corruption.

Kaelen stepped in front of Seraphina instantly.

Lucien narrowed his eyes. "You're too early."

Evelyne tilted her head. "Am I?"

Her gaze locked onto Seraphina.

"You're changing the story too much. It's becoming… inconvenient."

Seraphina's voice was cold. "You rewrote my family into monsters."

Evelyne sighed softly, almost disappointed.

"No, dear Empress. I simply chose the version where I survive."

The Divine Beast let out a furious roar.

The forest trembled.

Evelyne raised her hand slightly.

And for the first time—her light magic cracked.

Dark veins spread beneath it.

Seraphina noticed immediately.

"You're corrupting yourself."

Evelyne smiled wider.

"I'm adapting."

The ground beneath them split open suddenly.

The battle began without warning.

---

Steel clashed against light.

Lucien vanished into the trees.

Kaelen met Evelyne's knights head-on.

And Seraphina—

stood face to face with Evelyne alone.

The wind between them felt ancient.

Fated.

Broken.

"You don't understand what you're protecting," Evelyne whispered.

Seraphina lifted her hand. Silver and shadow swirled together.

"I understand enough."

Evelyne's eyes narrowed slightly.

"You think you're the true Empress because you remember differently."

A pause.

Then softly—

"But memories can be edited too."

For the first time, Seraphina hesitated.

And in that single moment of doubt—

Evelyne struck.

A beam of fractured light slammed into Seraphina, sending her crashing through the forest ground.

The Divine Beast roared in fury—but a barrier of corrupted light stopped it.

Kaelen shouted her name.

Lucien rushed back—

But Seraphina raised her hand from the dust.

Slowly standing.

Blood at her lip.

Eyes glowing brighter than before.

"No more edits," she said quietly.

Her power surged.

"Show me the truth you're hiding."

The world cracked open.

And the ruins of the Crown of Eclipse appeared ahead of them—just within reach.

But so did the final warning:

A massive inscription carved into stone.

"WHOEVER CLAIMS THE CROWN WILL REWRITE THE WORLD… OR ERASE THEMSELVES FROM IT."

Silence fell.

Even Evelyne stopped smiling.

Seraphina stepped forward anyway.

"I was never meant to survive this story," she said.

Her voice was calm.

Certain.

"So let's see who breaks first."

And she walked toward the ruins.

Alone.
