A minute later, her phone rang again—this time, it was a call from him.
The incessant ringing disrupted her already unstable mind.
She made a quick turn and pulled over. Without saying a word, she switched off her phone.
Peace returned to her world.
She sat in the car for a while in silence. After all the shouting, she suddenly realized she was thirsty. Seeing a small convenience store ahead, she decided to get a bottle of water.
Just as she unbuckled her seatbelt, there was a knock on her window.
It was a traffic officer.
"Sorry, ma'am, you can't park here."
Shen Ming opened the door and stepped out of the car, flicking her silky hair back. She was in no mood to deal with anyone.
"Fine, just tow it."
The officer had been working for years, but he'd never encountered a driver who was so uncooperative.
"Ma'am, please don't disturb our work. Here's a ticket, and please move your car immediately."
She had only wanted to buy a bottle of water, but sometimes even the simplest of desires are thwarted.
Shaking her head, she decided not to make things difficult for the officer.
"Sorry for the trouble. I'll move it now."
She got back in the car and drove off.
She stopped in front of Su Yuyan's house, parked the car by the side of the road, and as soon as she got out of the car, she heard the sound of another car honking.
She recognized the vehicle behind her—Rong Zhaonan's car.
Rong Zhaonan stepped out of the car as the driver opened the door for him. He walked toward her confidently.
Shen Ming raised her hand to shield herself from the headlights, which were glaring. She saw him wearing a coat, walking straight toward her.
"What's going on?" she asked. "Why are you here?"
Rong Zhaonan smiled.
"I saw your car on the road. When I noticed you were arguing with a traffic officer, I became worried and decided to follow you."
Her car had caught his attention on the road, and he must have remembered it.
Shen Ming waved the ticket in her hand.
"No trouble, just got a ticket."
Rong Zhaonan always had a calm, friendly demeanor. After the incident the other night, he hadn't asked many questions, but now he seemed concerned for her well-being.
"How's your family reacting? Are they planning to reconcile with the Wei family?" he asked.
The matter of reconciling with the Wei family was something Shen Ming wasn't ready to talk about.
"Thanks for your concern. I heard from the Wei family that the injuries were serious, but with things being like this, are you sure you still want to hang out with me? Aren't you worried I'll drag you into this mess?"
Rong Zhaonan chuckled softly.
He seemed to resemble his biological mother more than his father, lacking the characteristic coldness of the Rong family.
"If I were scared, I wouldn't be standing here now, would I? Is this your new place? Would you mind inviting me in for a drink?"
Just when Shen Ming thought he was a decent guy, he suddenly asked such a request.
"Young Master, this doesn't sound like something you should be saying. You want me to invite you in at this hour? Isn't that a bit much?"
He grinned.
"Don't think too much. If it's inconvenient, never mind. I followed you here just to chat. You didn't reply to the message I sent earlier. Are you feeling down? There's a small music event in East Town, it's quite interesting. If you want to go, I'm happy to accompany you."
Recently, Shen Ming had interacted with Rong Zhaonan a lot. He hadn't even asked about her relationship with Ning Zhiqian, the center of the rumors.
"Young Master Rong, you're being so kind to me. I'm not used to this. Have we become that close of friends already?"
She looked at him, her eyes mischievous.
Rong Zhaonan didn't know why, but at that moment, her playful eyes seemed particularly charming. He smiled again, his voice soft.
"Miss Shen, we're friends, aren't we? It's only natural to care about friends."
His reply was so smooth, Shen Ming couldn't help but feel a little taken aback. "Friend," she thought. It had been a long time since she heard that word.
She felt a bit warmer, despite everything.
"Well, I'm fine. Thanks for following me all the way here, but I can't invite you in. This is Su Yuyan's place, and I can't do anything without his permission. So, I'll have to say goodbye for now. See you next time."
She waved her hand and turned to go inside.
"See you next time," Rong Zhaonan smiled as he watched her go.
After a long pause, he finally got back into his car and left.
Back at the Rong household, in the courtyard of Rong Zhaonan's residence, his assistant stood next to him.
They were both watching what was happening across the street.
The flirtatious Shen Ming was chatting happily with their second young master. She was getting awfully close to him, and it seemed to be a happy conversation.
Where was their respect for their boss, Rong Zhaonan?
"Mr. Rong," the assistant said with a cold snort, "I think we should stop sending gifts to Miss Shen. Hmph."
Zhuo Hang let out a scoff, clearly unhappy with how things were unfolding.
Rong Zhaonan turned to face him, his eyes narrowing slightly.
"After all the calls I made to her, she still won't answer. And now, she's out there chatting so carefree."
"Go, send her a message," Rong Zhaonan ordered.
