Chapter 40 - The Death of Hundreds - Part I

Ferinish walked toward the Demon Hunters' Association, her sword strapped to her waist and her gaze fixed on any danger. Upon entering, she was greeted by a pleasant scent, a receptionist, and several men and women sitting in chairs. Some were already hunters, others were aspiring to become one.

The receptionist looked at the woman, feeling a shiver run through her body. The hunters looked at Ferinish tensely, almost prepared for any fight, and the civilians were nervous, but doing nothing.

"Good morning, miss. Is there anything I can do for you?"

"Yes. I want to take the test to become a demon hunter."

***

In her library, Slady sat at her desk, thinking about things.

"Okay, today is a weekday. The girls went to do their work, Ferinish went to enlist as a hunter... and I'm "supposed" to work as a librarian."

"But I need to test police efficiency. I need to know who's more likely to find me or not."

Truth sat at her desk, arms and legs crossed, her head turned toward him.

"And 'supposedly,' you need me?"

"Can you help me search my memory?"

"What am I supposed to do? You're the boss..." (Snort)

She hovered around Slady, thinking.

"Now, do you remember that evidence they sent you before you deleted everything from that website?"

"Yes."

***

Morieng Tai and Forgent Sate. Two criminals who are gang leaders linked to drug trafficking and involvement in some pretty heinous crimes.

***

"Do you remember the evidence, Truth?"

"Hmmmm... Morieng kidnapped the wife of the man who sent you the request. Afraid of his beloved being terminated, he didn't have the courage to contact the police."

"Forgent, the leader of the rival gang, ended up killing the cousin of a man who ended up having a brief relationship with him."

"Did the girl know Forgent was a criminal?"

"Supposedly not. Her cousin's descriptions only make it clear she was a sweet and innocent girl."

Slady pursed her lips, beginning to write on a small piece of paper...

***

"So you're going to take the test to assess your Hunter Rank. I just need your ID card." (The receptionist said nervously)

Ferinish nodded, taking out a small, but very well-made, fake ID. The receptionist read the contents, handing the document back.

"Just sit and wait patiently, Miss Lawhell."

"Okay."

She turned and sat in a chair, people backing away, fearful of her powerful presence.

"Is she really not a hunter?"

"I don't know, she seems very dangerous, it's best not to talk to her."

The murmurs were heard by her, who remained silent with a somber expression.

"..."

***

"That's a good plan, Slady. But what are you going to do with the bodies of the members and leaders?"

"Throwing them into an Inferius isn't an option. When someone who's already been murdered is thrown there, the Renkai Energy doesn't end up deforming their body, transforming them into just a monster, but retaining a certain "essence" of their past life."

"There's a point. So you're going to execute as usual?"

"Yes. It's the best I can do, it's the way I've always done it."

***

After a waiting period, those selected are called to take the test: cognitive and physical. The future hunters sit at their classroom tables. Ferinish looks around, confused.

"Where do I sit?"

She asked the examiner, who crossed his arms and responded rudely.

"You've never been to school, have you? You should know!"

"..."

A vein bulged in her temple, and she placed her hand on her sword... but she controlled herself. She sat down in a random spot.

She received the test, was handed a pen for her answers, and an answer key.

"Good thing Slady taught me how to write..."

She began to read the test's contents:

☆☆☆

Demon Hunter Association Cognitive Test

Full Name:

Date of Administration:

Result:

1 - What are the main types of Inferius currently known?

2 - What is Renkai Energy?

3 - How do you obtain the Mana Releaser?

4 - How are demon hunters classified?

5 - How can Renkata be used?

There were several general questions on the test, such as how to fight demons, weaknesses, how to manipulate magic, etc.

☆☆☆

"..."

Her eyes widened as she saw the various questions, from the simplest to the most complex.

"What had Slady taught me?" (She murmured)

***

Slady was fiddling with her phone, swivelling in her swivel chair, using an anonymous method to bring the leaders together for negotiations.

"Are you telling them you've created a 'powerful' drug to negotiate between them?"

"Yes, Truth. They're going to compete with each other."

"And what is the drug?"

"It's a drug that attacks people's emotions, making them extremely aggressive and angry."

"...What if they ask you to test the drug?"

"I've had drug resistance in my blood for a while now..."

"Oh, right."

***

In the test room, Ferinish was the last one left; the examiner had his arms crossed, tapping his foot hard on the floor.

"Time's running out, woman."

"..."

She stood up slowly, handing over the test with her head bowed.

"Will I be able to pass the physical test?"

"Yes, but the cognitive test is still very important..."

He smacked her head with the test.

"You idiot."

He turned and left the room, leaving Ferinish alone. She tightened her grip on her sword.

"I'm going to end this physical test!"

***

"Woohoo!"

Slady raised her arms, laughing in celebration.

"Did you do it, Slady?"

"Yes, all the members of both gangs will come!"

Truth's eyes widened, spreading both hands in agitation.

"Wait a minute! Are you going to kill over a hundred people?"

Slady looked at Truth, more serious than usual.

"All the shoulders are monsters, they'll get what they deserve. And I'm going to rescue the kidnapped girl."

"Slady... this is dangerous, there are several powerful men with great magical mastery!"

"Truth... trust your dad!"
