Zoe's POV
The phone vibrated again.
Not loudly. Not urgently. Just once.
A single pulse against the duvet beside my thigh — quiet, deliberate and intentional.
I froze.
My heart reacted before my mind did, slamming hard against my ribs as if it already knew what my eyes hadn't seen yet. The room felt smaller suddenly. Warmer. The air thicker, pressing against my skin, crawling up my neck.
I stared at the screen for a long moment without touching it.
Don't look. The voice in my head said.
If I don't look, it isn't real.
Another vibration followed. Slightly longer this time.
God I tried not to look but fear of the unknown took a better part of me.
I swallowed and reached for the phone with shaking fingers. Almost forgetting who was there with me.
The message was already open when my thumb brushed the screen.
How can you say you love him and lie to his face every day?
You don't deserve him
He must know that and I will make sure of that.
