Chapter 16 - Chapter 15: Firestorm

By morning, the world knew her name.

Zara Raine.

Not Winters. Not the quiet assistant in nude heels and low bun. Not the shadow skimming ValeCorp's halls.

The daughter of Dominic Raine had returned—and she'd done it wearing blood-red silk and a smile sharp enough to draw blood.

The tabloids screamed.

Heiress Resurfaces at ValeCorp Gala After Five Years Missing.Raine Legacy: Back From the Ashes?Lucien Vale and Zara Raine—A Strategic Alliance or Scandal?

Zara stood in front of the wall-length windows in Lucien's penthouse, watching the screens flicker with her face, her name, her past.

Her pulse should have been racing. It wasn't.

She had never felt calmer.

Behind her, Lucien set down a silver tray with black coffee, sliced fruit, and a neat file folder.

"You broke the internet," he said mildly. "Congratulations."

Zara didn't turn. "Ethan?"

Lucien stepped closer, flipping open the file. "Panicking. His assistant tried to scrub old acquisition reports from the servers this morning. Sloppy."

Zara smiled. "Desperation is loud."

Lucien passed her the file. "Board members are circling. The older ones remember your father. Some are already contacting my office—testing the waters. Everyone's wondering what your return means."

Zara's expression hardened. "It means this war is no longer in the dark."

She flipped through the folder. Surveillance photos. Meeting schedules. Call logs traced to Ethan's private line.

One entry stood out.

UNKNOWN CONTACT — CODE NAME: ORPHEUS.

She tapped the line. "You ever heard of him?"

Lucien's eyes narrowed. "Not yet. But if Ethan's using code names, he's planning something off-books. Likely dangerous."

Zara nodded, but her thoughts were spinning. If Caleb was killed to bury secrets, and Ethan was working with shadow contacts now… something bigger was brewing.

And she'd just lit the fuse.

Across the city, at ValeCorp Headquarters, the air was toxic.

Ethan Blackwell's voice slammed against the walls of his corner office.

"Why the hell wasn't this caught? We had background checks. HR! Internal security!"

Celeste Myles stood across from him, arms folded. Her poise didn't crack, but the faint tension around her mouth betrayed everything.

"We underestimated her," she said evenly. "She played the long game."

Ethan's fist slammed the desk.

"She's not just a ghost—she's a goddamn virus. And Lucien Vale is helping her spread."

Celeste stepped forward. "We can still control this. Spin it. Question her credibility—release photos from after the scandal, fake therapy reports—make her look unstable."

Ethan's eyes burned. "No. That won't work. Not now. Not when she has the public behind her."

He paced like a caged animal, breath short. "She wants blood. Mine."

Celeste was quiet for a moment. "Then maybe it's time we draw hers first."

The silence that followed was colder than any threat.

Ethan turned. "What are you saying?"

Celeste's gaze was sharp. Calculating. "You took out Caleb. You crossed the line. She won't stop now. So either we end this surgically… or you die slowly."

Ethan looked at her, something ancient and cruel flickering in his eyes.

"Fine," he said. "If she wants to play war…" He walked to the bar cart, poured whiskey with a trembling hand. "Then let's remind her what ruin really looks like."

Back at Lucien's penthouse, Zara stood at the mirror, reapplying lipstick.

"You ready?" Lucien asked behind her.

Zara met his reflection in the glass. "Always."

He came up behind her, resting his hands on her hips. "We can hit him in three places. His shell companies, his off-shore accounts, and the NDA scandal he buried last year."

Zara nodded. "I want to move fast. While he's still reeling."

Lucien's voice dipped. "And after?"

Zara turned slowly. Her voice was steel. "After that, we go for his crown."

They kissed—brief, hungry, full of shared fire—and then separated.

There was work to do. Enemies to expose. Systems to burn.

But beneath it all, a new truth had taken root.

Zara Raine wasn't surviving anymore.

She was coming for everything they stole—and this time, they'd see her coming.

Cliffhanger: Ethan sets a deadly plan into motion. Zara prepares to strike next—but someone inside ValeCorp is about to betray her.
