Chapter 36 - The Red Crystal’s Power

Tara, Jasmine, Neha, and Tom stood in the center of Moonshine, their eyes fixed on the horizon where the ancient ruins of the sorceress's tower lay hidden beneath the shadow of the Skycore. The journey ahead was uncertain, but one thing was clear: the Mirror of Ages had to be stopped, and only the red crystal held the key to its defeat.

The red crystal, glowing faintly with a vibrant energy, pulsed in the palm of Tara's hand. It had been an object of mystery since its arrival—a gem with an aura so intense that it had seemed almost unnatural. Now, it was their only hope. The red crystal was said to hold the power to negate the magic of the mirror, to destroy the fragments that had been scattered across Moonshine.

But there was a danger in using it. The crystal wasn't just a weapon—it was a force of balance itself. Its magic was tied to the Skycore, and if used recklessly, it could tip the scales of Moonshine's delicate equilibrium. Tara knew that they couldn't afford to fail.

"We need to find the mirror's fragments," Tara said, her voice steady despite the heavy weight of responsibility. "Once we have them, the crystal can break its power. But we must be careful. Every piece we gather makes the mirror stronger."

Jasmine, who had been silent for a moment, nodded. "We must go to the places where time is most fractured. Those are where the mirror's shards will be hidden. The deeper the corruption, the stronger the mirror's pull."

Neha shuddered, glancing around. "And if we don't stop it?"

"The city will age," Tara replied, her gaze determined. "People will lose their years, and the balance will be shattered. The magic of Moonshine will die with them."

Tom clenched his fists at his sides. He had seen the damage the mirror could cause. When it first started stealing from the people, the old had grown younger, but at a terrible cost—their lives became twisted, their bodies aged unnaturally, while the young grew older. Time itself had become a weapon.

"We won't let that happen," Tom said firmly. "Let's finish this, once and for all."

With a renewed sense of purpose, the group set out toward the first of the mirror's known hiding spots—the ruins of the ancient temple in the eastern forest, deep in the heart of Moonshine. The trees there were thick with old magic, and the land was known to hold secrets that few dared to seek.

The air around them grew colder as they neared the temple. Tara could feel the pull of the red crystal growing stronger with each step. The closer they got, the more the crystal seemed to hum, as if it recognized the darkness that lay ahead. The ruins loomed before them, covered in ivy and moss, its stone walls worn with the passage of time.

Jasmine, ever watchful, was the first to step forward. "The shard is close," she said quietly, her eyes scanning the surroundings. "We need to be careful. The mirror's magic will be stronger here."

Tara nodded, gripping the crystal tightly. "We'll destroy it before it can do any more damage."

The group moved deeper into the ruins, their footsteps echoing in the silence. The air seemed to thicken as they approached a hidden chamber beneath the temple, its entrance covered by ancient stones. But with a few swift motions, they cleared the path and entered.

Inside, the chamber was bathed in an eerie red glow, and at the center, on an altar of black stone, lay the first shard of the Mirror of Ages. It sparkled with an unsettling brilliance, its edges sharp and glinting as if it were alive.

Tara stepped forward, holding the red crystal high. The two powers—one a source of creation and the other destruction—seemed to vibrate in opposition. The shard of the mirror pulsed with an unnatural energy, as if it were trying to fight against the crystal's presence. But Tara didn't hesitate. She raised the red crystal higher, feeling its power surge. The shard trembled, and for a moment, the world around them seemed to freeze. A cold, malevolent force filled the chamber as the shard of the mirror began to dissolve, its dark power breaking apart in a burst of light.

The air around them shifted, and the oppressive weight that had hung over the group lifted. The first piece of the Mirror of Ages was gone, destroyed by the crystal's pure energy.

The red crystal in Tara's hand dimmed, its light fading slightly as it drained some of its power. She lowered it slowly, her breath coming in short bursts. The first step had been taken.

"We've done it," Neha said, a relieved smile spreading across her face. "But there are more fragments, right?"

Tara nodded, her face grim. "Yes. This is only the beginning. We'll need to find the rest, and fast. Every second counts."

As the group turned to leave the temple, the ground beneath them rumbled, a low, menacing growl that seemed to shake the very earth. Tara's heart raced. "It's not over. The mirror's fragments are already calling to each other."

The sound of shifting stone echoed through the temple, and the shadows around them seemed to twist and writhe. The battle was far from over, and the true power of the Mirror of Ages had yet to be fully unleashed.
