Chapter 88 - Chapter 88: Dou Di Aura. Battle against the Eight Star Peak

Above the vast and ancient city of the Gu Clan known as Gu Sacred City the figure of Hun Miesheng stood quietly suspended in the air. His black robes fluttered gently against the invisible currents of force that rippled across the sky. His sharp eyes gazed downward at the immense city below. At first glance the streets seemed lively and bustling with people merchants calling loudly in the market and cultivators moving to and fro as if nothing was amiss. Yet Hun Miesheng knew better. The moment he had stepped out of the black gate that marked the entrance of the Gu Realm he had sensed the difference. There was a weight in the atmosphere of this city. The heaviness of suppressed tension hung in every corner. Though there were no visible soldiers lining the streets though no weapon was drawn and no battle cry was sounded Hun Miesheng could feel that nets of killing intent had already been cast around him. The people in the streets walked with hurried steps their faces filled with worry as if they were all aware of something dangerous looming over them. The joy of daily life had been smothered beneath a blanket of unease.

Hun Miesheng let out a low laugh deep in his throat. He raised his chin slightly as if savoring the feeling of being the center of all this fear. His words rolled out in a relaxed drawl heavy with mockery. "So it seems this city will become a river of blood because of my arrival today." The sound was not loud yet it carried on the winds and echoed over the rooftops so that countless ears caught it and countless hearts trembled at its meaning.

His gaze turned upward toward the sky. At first it seemed the heavens above were dimming as if a storm were gathering. But Hun Miesheng immediately realized that it was not the sky itself but rather the light barrier that covered the entire Gu Sacred City. That barrier shimmered faintly in dark light like the surface of a vast dome of water. Its oppressive force pressed down on the city and on him. "So this is the protective light barrier that is said to contain a trace of Dou Di aura" Hun Miesheng murmured to himself. His voice carried across the city like a whisper that no one could ignore. "Very well then let me test just how strong this so called inheritance of a Dou Di really is."

The last word had barely fallen when his figure blurred and vanished from his previous place. In the next instant he reappeared several thousand feet higher in the sky towering over the city like a black sun. He raised his hand and clenched it into a fist. Blue light surged across his arm gathering into a mighty torrent of Dou Qi. The brilliant glow condensed into a titanic fist of energy. With a swift motion he swung his fist down. A line of azure brilliance cut through the air like lightning leaving a mark of destruction across the heavens before smashing against the barrier.

The point of impact shuddered violently. Ripples of distorted space spread outward like waves on a pond. For a moment the barrier twisted and warped as if it might break. But instead of shattering an ancient response stirred. A hand formed of pure energy thousands of feet wide emerged from the barrier itself. That hand carried a breath that transcended time itself. It pressed downward with the majesty of an emperor of heaven and earth. Even a Dou Sheng before that hand felt no more than an ant.

Hun Miesheng's eyes narrowed but there was no fear in them only an even sharper gleam. "So it really is the aura of a Dou Di." He exhaled slowly then tightened his fist again. His Dou Qi erupted like a tide and he smashed another punch upward to meet that ancient hand. The clash produced a booming sound that shook the entire city. The impact sent waves of pressure rolling outward. Storms of wind swept through every street lifting roof tiles shattering windows and scattering the crowds into chaos.

Within the flow of that pressure Hun Miesheng had already discerned the level of power contained within the hand. It was comparable to the strike of a Dou Sheng eight star at its peak. A worthy measure of the heritage left behind by the Gu Clan. But he could also sense the nature of this barrier. The power was spread across its entirety. One strike at a single point would be dispersed evenly across the whole dome. Breaking through such a structure would require power beyond eight star at peak. At the very least the force of a nine star Dou Sheng was required to tear open a breach.

Hun Miesheng's lips curled into a faint sneer. "It can be broken but it will take some time. And I doubt the old dogs of the Gu Clan will grant me the courtesy of that time." His voice rang coldly as he lowered his fist. His eyes swept the city with lazy mockery. "You still hide. Do you think you can play hide and seek with me. The game of cowards who tremble in corners belongs only to the weak." His voice was steady yet every syllable dripped with contempt.

From within the city his challenge was answered by another voice. "Weak. It seems you have not realized your own position yet. A prey that does not know it is prey soon dies." Two figures emerged from the shadows within Gu Sacred City. They stepped onto the air and stood above the city walls. One was a man his eyes filled with hatred. The other was a woman her figure alluring her lips curved in amusement as she examined Hun Miesheng with a predator's gaze.

Hun Miesheng tilted his head curiously. Their faces were unfamiliar yet the hostility in their eyes was undeniable. The woman gave a soft laugh. "He is the father of Gu Xin. What a pity for the side branch of the Gu Clan. They finally produced a genius and he was crippled."

Hun Miesheng's expression shifted as recognition flashed in his eyes. "Ah Gu Xin. That was the one I crippled when I wore the face of the Nihility Devouring Flame. No wonder this fellow glares at me like that." He chuckled to himself before his gaze sharpened again. "But a three star Dou Sheng and a two star Dou Sheng dare to stand before me. I can only say that your courage is larger than your brains."

His words were accompanied by the sudden release of his aura. The overwhelming presence of an eight star Dou Sheng spread across the sky like a tidal wave. The two who had just arrived turned pale instantly under that weight. Hun Miesheng's hand lifted slowly and the surrounding space froze into stillness. A vast black hand of energy condensed from Dou Qi descended toward the pair sealing their escape.

"Humph." A cold snort rang out across the void. A shriveled hand tore through the air its speed surpassing all. That ancient hand crushed Hun Miesheng's attack to nothing in an instant.

Hun Miesheng's eyes narrowed. "So you did chase me after all." His voice was calm yet his pupils darkened. Above Gu Sacred City the massive black gate of the Gu Realm opened again and from within stepped a figure clad in gray robes his body gaunt his presence ancient and vast. The pressure he carried washed over the city like a storm tide.

This was one of the Gu Clan's Supreme Elders Dao Xuan. His cultivation stood at the very peak of eight star Dou Sheng only a step from nine star.

The gray robed elder's eyes locked onto Hun Miesheng with cold hostility. "Hun Miesheng. Hand over the Golden Emperor Burning Sky Flame. Do so and I will spare your life."

Hun Miesheng let out a laugh soft and cruel. "Spare my life. My life is not yours to spare." His sleeve flicked and a golden flame appeared in his palm. The radiance painted the sky in fiery hues. He toyed with the flame for a moment then tossed it lightly upward where it floated between them. "Old man if you want it then take it yourself. Just do not break your bones in the process. I would hate to be accused of bullying the elderly."

The taunt cut deep into the elder's pride. His voice thundered with rage. "An early eight star Dou Sheng dares act so arrogantly. Today I will see what strength you think you have to be so wild." He pointed forward and the Dou Qi in the world roared in answer. A tidal wave of energy surged. Gray Dou Qi swirled around him forming a massive finger in the heavens. "Great Annihilation Finger." The finger descended trailing waves of deathly aura that promised to strip away life and soul alike. This was a Heaven ranked Dou Technique one that few in the Gu Clan had ever seen.

Hun Miesheng's eyes narrowed. "So a Heaven ranked Dou Technique." He raised his hand and pointed in answer. Black Dou Qi condensed at his fingertip. "Netherworld Finger." His strike carried death and ruin condensed to a single point.

The two colossal fingers collided in midair. A storm of force exploded outward. Entire districts of the city below were flattened in an instant. Buildings crumbled and countless lives were swallowed by the shockwave. Screams filled the air but the protective barrier sealed the city shut. No one could flee.

Hun Miesheng's eyes gleamed with mockery as he looked down at the destruction. "To kill me you are willing to sacrifice an entire city. The Gu Clan is truly noble." His voice was drenched in sarcasm.

Dao Xuan's face did not shift. His eyes were cold as stone. "For the Golden Emperor Burning Sky Flame their deaths are worth the price." To him the lives of these vassals were insignificant next to the legacy of the Gu Clan.

Hun Miesheng tilted his head studying the elder's face. "So it is not only the flame you covet. You want what else lies within me as well. You hope to seize my fortunes to break through to nine star and prolong your pitiful life."

Dao Xuan did not deny it. His gaze burned with naked greed.

Hun Miesheng laughed softly his teeth flashing. "I carry many treasures. But I am afraid you will not live long enough to claim them."

With a flick of his wrist a droplet of dark water appeared hovering over his palm. Blue light rippled across its surface. The instant it emerged the world seemed to grow heavy. Every stone every breath of air every being in the city suddenly bore an invisible weight. It was the power of the One Yuan Heavy Water ranked at the pinnacle of heavenly treasures.

Dao Xuan's eyes widened with greed. His breath quickened. In his heart he knew that if he could seize this treasure his cultivation might step into the ninth star. His lifespan could be extended his reign prolonged. His body quivered with desire but he quickly steadied himself. He released his full cultivation without hesitation. His Dou Qi poured forth like an endless tide. Behind him a giant form of energy rose thousands of feet high. The shadow of his Dou Sheng True Body loomed over the city like a god of death.

The clash between them was about to erupt into its fiercest stage. The Gu Clan's Supreme Elder Dao Xuan against the Hall of Souls' master Hun Miesheng each wielding heaven shattering treasures and power that could annihilate nations.
