Chapter 9 - "The Man in the Shadows"

Night – Seoul, Outside Seoul General Hospital

As soon as they arrived back in the city, the van slowed to a stop in front of Seoul General Hospital. Han Hanni looked out the window, exhausted but determined.

Her cameraman, Jun-wo, turned to her. "You sure you don't want me to stick around? It's late."

Hanni shook her head. "I'll be fine. Min-Yoon's inside. I'll meet her and head straight to the precinct."

Jun-wo hesitated. "You've barely slept. You should rest."

Hanni opened the door and stepped out. "Rest when we get justice. Thanks for today, Jun-wo. Drive safe."

He nodded, watching her walk into the hospital before driving off into the night.

Inside Seoul General Hospital – Nurses' Locker Room

Min-Yoon was just finishing her shift when one of her fellow nurses approached.

"Min-Yoon, we're heading to that new noodle place near the station. Come with us?"

Min-Yoon forced a small smile as she removed her gloves. "Sorry, not tonight. I have to go to the precinct."

"Again? Why?"

She grew quiet, then said, "The police caught a gang recently. I need to see if they were the ones who attacked me."

Concern filled her friend's face. "Are you sure you're okay to go alone?"

"I'm not alone. My sister's picking me up."

Her friend sighed. "You're too brave for your own good. At least message me when you get home."

Min-Yoon nodded. "I will. Take care."

She grabbed her coat and headed out toward the lobby just in time to see Hanni walking in.

Hospital Lobby

"There you are," Hanni said, pulling Min-Yoon into a quick hug.

"You didn't sleep again, did you?" Min-Yoon asked, eyeing her sister's pale face.

Hanni smirked. "You know me."

They exchanged a look tired, heavy, but united.

"Let's go," Hanni said. "We've got questions for the precinct."

Min-Yoon took a deep breath, already feeling the weight of the night ahead. "Then let's find the truth."

Together, they stepped out into the cold Seoul night and quickly boarded the nearest bus

Inside the precinct, they approached a police officer and asked to see the gang members arrested the night of the attack. Without hesitation, the officer led them down the hallway to the holding cells.

Min-Yoon froze for a moment, staring through the bars. Then she spoke firmly, "It's them. I'm sure of it."

Han Hanni's fury exploded. She screamed at the gang, her voice echoing in the hallway, "You disgusting monsters!"

She lunged forward and slapped one of them through the bars before being pulled back by Min-Yoon and two other officers.

"Calm down, Ms. Han," the detective said, guiding them to sit.

Once seated, the detective asked them to give a full statement about what happened that night.

One of the gang members, his face bruised and swollen, suddenly yelled, "We were the ones attacked! That man nearly killed us!"

Min-Yoon's face hardened. "Lies! You were trying to kill me! That man he saved my life."

She turned to the officer beside her. "Did anyone see the man who saved me? Did any reports mention him?"

The officer shook his head. "No ma'am. When our unit arrived, you were already gone. The gang was found unconscious in the street."

"Was there CCTV in that alley?"

"None. It's a blind street. No cameras at all."

Frustrated, Min-Yoon stood up and walked back toward the cells. She faced the gang leader directly. "Did you see the man who beat you?"

The gang member, eyes darting, responded with a mixture of anger and fear. "Yes he's tall… looked rich… strong as hell… and terrifying."

Without a word, Hanni turned to the officer. ""Put them in the high-security ward. They're heartless and soulless bastards."

She stormed out. Min-Yoon followed, walking beside her silently.

"You're thinking about him again, aren't you?" Hanni asked with a smirk.

"No," Min-Yoon replied too quickly.

Hanni laughed. "Sure you're not."

They stopped by a samgyeopsal restaurant to eat. Hanni had insisted on it, noticing the tired look on her sister's face. "Come on, unni," she had said. "You haven't eaten anything all day. My treat.".

As they stepped out of the restaurant into the cool night air, Hanni leaned closer to her sister, her voice lowering slightly.

"I'm getting close, Min-Yoon. I'll get justice for Dad soon."

The seriousness in her voice made Min-Yoon worry. "Just… don't do anything reckless, unni."

That night, once home, Min-Yoon went straight to her room and collapsed onto the bed from exhaustion. Hanni changed into pajamas, then sat at her desk. On the walls were photos and newspaper clippings, all connected to Minister Kang. Her eyes focused on one headline as she scribbled notes about the attorney and the mayor's connection.

Morning – Safe House, Seoul

Jahm's alarm buzzed loudly. He rolled out of bed, brushed his teeth, and took a cold shower. As steam rose in the small bathroom, he stepped out and slipped on a sleek black suit custom-made from Suit It Up Manila. At his drawer, he scanned through several watches before selecting a Rolex Datejust with a Black Dial on Oystersteel.

In his mind, a voice echoed steady, focused.

"This isn't just a job. Today, I become the shadow behind a monster. No mistakes, no hesitation. One wrong move… and it's over."

He fastened the watch around his wrist, then glanced at himself in the mirror, eyes sharp with purpose.

He looked sharp, controlled, and ready.

Grabbing a banana from the kitchen for a quick breakfast, Jahm walked toward the door—but paused. Justice's loud snores echoed from his room.

Shaking his head, Jahm called out, "Justice, it's late again. Wake up!"

No response.

He walked over and knocked on the door harder. "Hey! You'll oversleep your whole life away."

A muffled groan came from inside. "Five more minutes, bro…"

Jahm smirked slightly and turned back toward the door.

Jahm stepped into the garage, slid into his Mustang, and drove into the morning fog.

"Let's begin," Jahm muttered under his breath.

In his mind, he added, "This isn't just another mission. This is the one that changes everything. For the country of Korea and also for our country. For every life he's destroyed. I didn't come this far to fail."

He straightened his collar, heart steady with purpose. "It's time to become Lance Gonzalez."

Today was the day he would officially enter the world of Minister Kang the most feared drug lord in South Korea.
