Chapter 26 - Chapter 26 – The End, and the Return

Peter ignored the suspicious stares from the officers. With a flick of his web-shooters and raw, wall-crawling strength, he yanked both the firefighter and Niels up to safety in a matter of seconds.

The firefighter thanked him with a firm nod. Niels… didn't say a word at first. His eyes locked on Peter with an intensity that made Peter's skin prickle.

Strength beyond human. Reflexes like lightning.

If this wasn't a "super-soldier," then what was?

And if he could just get a blood sample—

Forget Connors' untested serum. This was the real deal.

Niels stepped forward with a friendly smile that didn't reach his eyes.

"Spider-Man, right? Thanks for saving me. I'm Niels, head of biological research at Oscorp."

But Peter—having once fused with the Shadow Spider-Man and inherited some of his uncanny instincts—caught the truth instantly.

That look. He knew it too well.

Greed. Calculation.

The kind of look a fox gives a chicken.

"Yeah. Hi," Peter said flatly, then vaulted right off the bridge.

This time, the officers didn't even try to stop him.

Not every car tossed over the side had people inside. Of the seven total vehicles (one already sunk earlier), only three had passengers—including Niels. The other two rescues were quick and drama-free.

Moments later, Peter was back beside Captain Stacy, raising his hands innocently.

"Sorry, Captain. Had to step out for a minute—now I'm back."

Before Stacy could respond, Officer Omar returned with his report.

They'd found massive claw marks—likely from a giant reptile—on both nearby vehicles and the bridge.

Witnesses confirmed two things:

1. A humanoid lizard monster had appeared earlier on the Manhattan side of Williamsburg Bridge, smashing everything in sight.

2. The dangling cars had been thrown by that creature, not Spider-Man.

In fact, Spider-Man had caught them mid-flight—and even saved a young boy before police arrived.

Piece by piece, the picture changed.

Spider-Man wasn't the villain.

He was the hero.

Some in the crowd even started cheering, clapping for their masked savior.

Captain Stacy waved his officers to lower their weapons.

"Spider-Kid… stay this way. Don't ever give me a reason to call you a criminal."

Peter grinned. "You got it, Captain. Heh."

Mission accomplished. Stacy might still play the skeptic, but Peter could tell—something had shifted.

The man wasn't his enemy anymore.

Peter almost wanted to run and tell Gwen—

Wait. That would be weird.

He wasn't this world's Peter.

The thought hit him hard. He'd been here so long, so deep in this role, he kept forgetting: this wasn't his world.

No matter how much power I have, I can't abuse it. This isn't home. I'm just… passing through.

Still, before leaving, he could leave something behind.

With the crowd still cheering, Peter swung away from the bridge, following muscle memory to a forgotten corner of Queens—a derelict shack in one of the rougher neighborhoods.

This was once the local Peter's makeshift workshop, pieced together from scrap scavenged in junkyards. Here, the original web-shooters were born.

Crude, yes—but brilliant for their time.

Peter, however, had lived through the Chitauri invasion. He'd seen alien tech up close. And he had one more advantage: a suit from Tony Stark himself.

In half an hour, he'd upgraded the local Peter's shooters—smoother mechanics, stronger tensile output, no more "jam at the worst moment" issue.

By the time he finished, five hours had passed. Dawn in his real world was close.

Peter scribbled a short note, left it on the workbench, and closed his eyes.

In his mind, the glowing web appeared.

One thread, one snip—

Snap.

His consciousness shot through the darkness like a comet, diving into a new portal of light—

---

Queens, New York.

Peter's eyes opened to his own ceiling. He was back.

Tonight had been… incredible.

Nothing in his home reality had ever gotten this wild.

Only regret? He never got to fight the Lizard—it slipped away. Maybe one day.

Then he noticed something odd. The glowing thread in his mind… was still there.

Wait… does that mean I can still go back?

New text flickered in his mind:

> Marked Universes:

Earth-90214 – Shadow Spider-Man (currently inaccessible)

Earth-120703 – Amazing Spider-Man (available)

Peter's smile widened.

The adventure wasn't over yet.
