Chapter 2 - Brother

Klad watched as her sister devoured the food without any worry in the world. She didn't even bother to use the utensils he had brought her, instead she just held it with her hands while vigorously eating.

He would usually make her behave like a normal person, but not today. It had been a very tiresome day. So he just sat on the floor and leaned on the opposite wall of her, keeping some distance between them.

Ita attempted to speak while eating, but couldn't make sense of any word, so Klad just told her to shut up and finish eating.

After she finished devouring the food without any kind of shame, like she hadn't eaten in a while, Ita showed her hands to Klad's, meaning,

'Do you have any napkins?'

He sighed, took something he had been saving in case of an emergency for that day and tossed it to her.

"Thanks brother! Wait, these aren't napkins! Why did you give me bandages?"

"It's the only thing I have. If it really bothers you that much then maybe you should try not eating like an animal."

"I'm hungry, okay?! Besides it's not like anyone is seeing me."

"I am!" Klad sighed, defeated. He tossed her the keyring that had been placed in the keyhole of the door before entering, this one containing another key besides the one used for entering the room itself.

Ita quickly grabbed the keyring and unlocked her shackles, freeing herself. She quickly stood up and stretched, her long almost unrealistic white hair making itself more noticeable, while she stared at the ceiling with her inhumane dark eyes and extended her arms to the sky.

"Fiiiinalyyyy!!!! I'm free from my mortal bindings!"

She stared back at Klad. Other people would have flinched at the ghostly appearance of Ita, but not him. He was used to his appearance of her, and even if he wasn't, Klad had promised himself that he wouldn't do that to her.

"I'm sorry brother but I have no choice but to kill you. You have seen me; I can't leave any witnesses."

"Hey! Where did you learn that from?"

"You told me that you don't leave witnesses!"

"I told you that I avoid places with bystanders and also conceal my identity! How did you reach the conclusion that I kill them?"

"Dunno. Have you got any more food?"

Ita said, losing total interest on the topic. She lay on the floor, enjoying her newfound freedom by extending her hands and legs, to which proceeded the start rolling around on the wooden floor.

While she rolled and laughed, visibly enjoying the activity, Klad decided to asked her a question.

"So… how is that going?"

She stopped her rolling and laughing, staring motionlessly at the ceiling.

"It's… still bad. I don't know why but it keeps getting worse quickly. The pull is getting stronger each day and so do the other symptoms."

"Like when we were kids?"

A sad smile appeared on her face, the once unmoving bright dots inside the darkness that filled what had to be white in her eye were now slowly moving in a seemingly random motion.

"It much worse, you have no idea. If when we were kids felt like someone was tugging my shirt, now it feels like someone is trying to rip my skin off."

"How long after you can't hold it anymore?"

"I don't know. At least it seems like is not my body what is trying to pull, but something else."

"You think He is trying to pull your soul?"

"Maybe? I have no idea. How long until we can leave?"

Klad stared at her beautiful dark eyes, the bright sparks now back to being stopped.

"I'm trying Ita, I really am. But I can't find anyone willing to take the risks, they are more scared of the Inquisitors than I had thought."

Ita wore a really heavy expression as she stared at the ceiling.

"I… I don't know how much longer I can last brother… I–I think it's best if I just surrender myself to the Inquisitors. I am sure they will treat me well and —"

"Never! I will not make you a slave. Not as long as I'm here."

"But then what! For how much longer I will have to stay here, trapped in this —"

She started coughing violently, with red blood coming from her mouth, tainting the wooden floor while Klad rushed to her side.

"N—o! Wait—!"

Sadly, Klad already knew what he was getting himself into and yet, he didn't care. He noticed it the moment he approached her, the world started spinning, his stomach aching and his eyes itching.

Klad placed his hand on Ita's shoulder in spite of the symptoms he was starting to display because of her presence.

"I'm fi—Cough, cough— Just go away!"

Klad didn't listen to her, and proceeded to sit right beside her, waiting for the coughing to stop.

And so, after a couple of moments the symptoms finally ceased.

"Thanks brother… Are you sure you are alright?"

Klad was definitely not alright, but she didn't need to know that.

"Yeah, don't worry, besides this is not the worst that has happened to me today."

"Really? What could be worse than this?"

"I visited your grave."

"I have a grave?"

"I have told you many times that you do, we have to keep the lie going after all."

"But why would you even go? You already know that I'm here."

"Yeah, but Tari is not so fortunate, she reeeeally insisted that I should go to visit your grave. She's crazy, right?"

"Of course not you moron! She was always so nice with us … And how can you be such an ass with her?"

"Wha—?! But you are alive! Right here!"

"Yeah, duh! But she does not know! You didn't think that maybe she was sad because she missed her friend?"

"So what? It's not like —" His mind hurt. Klad grabbed his head with both hands, the headaches only kept getting stronger and stronger.

"I'm sorry. You should get away from me."

Klad nodded and went back to the other side of the room, with his head finally resting from the strain that being close to her sister meant.

"Any other symptom that I should be worried about?"

"Besides not needing to drink or go to the bathroom? No."

"Great. I will go to sleep now, have a good night."

"Wait. Can you sleep here today?"

"Fine."

Klad stood up, blew the candle that sat in the middle of the room and then rested his back against the wall, closing his eyes.

"Good night brother."

"—Night"

And so as his mind started to slip away, the image of his sister saying that she couldn't bear staying here anymore floated in his mind, but he knew that there was no other choice.

After all, she had been Cursed.
