Chapter 103 - Lonely Palace, Crumbling soul part 7

Luna walked through the door frame and looked for the next door to come through. She locked her eyes on the doors at the end of the corridor to the left.

Calm forest, hmm, what next? Luna thought as she walked towards the doors. But just as she drew near, a mysterious darkness began to seep through the cracks. Seeing it, Luna rushed in through the door and found no land underneath her feet

Luna started falling, but just as she was falling, saw snowflakes falling around her.

As she realized what was going on, she saw the white ground reflecting light towards her.

Within a second, she hit the ground. But as the snowy dust settled, the ground was indented in a shape of Luna.

The ground was filled with meters of snow, soothing the fall.

Luna lay face down in the snow. Coughing, she pushed herself off the ground, breathing in and out rapidly as her heart beat at an unprecedented speed.

As she looked up at a humongous wall of snow, easily ten times her height, she breathed out a thick cloud of air."Huh?" Luna mumbled.

She looked at her hands and touched the snow, blinking a few times as she frowned. The air was neither cold nor hot; the snow was the same, too. Neither was the place around her.

Luna chuckled as she stood up, thinking, How should I get out?

The only way Luna could think of was climbing. So, she kicked the wall, and her foot got stuck in. "Perfect," she said as she wiggled her foot in that hole, and jumped, sticking her other foot on the opposite wall.

The snow was sturdy enough to hold her weight, so she climbed up, step by step. She neared the exit atop her.

Within seconds, her head found itself lined up with the exit. But as she looked out, a snow storm was raging. The wind whistled, but harsh and terrifyingly. She hesitated to go out, but she thought that she couldn't waste the energy she had used and that the cold somehow didn't affect her.

So she jumped out the hole and grabbed the ground , she lay on her stomach with her legs dangling still in the hole. She crawled out and stood up, but as she did, she was hit with the storm, it was relentless. The more she stood, the more she was moved away from the hole; the wind was strong.

She was sliding slowly away. Luna looked around and saw in the distance how the trees were breaking apart from the wind, shattering and flying away into the clouds. But the wind hardly affected her, for some reason, she couldn't understand it at all.

Seeing that she stood in a flat land filled with snow with pointy spruce trees far away, she sighed and started walking forward.

She remembered the doors she had flown through and looked up. The doors were still there, a shining light and comfortable interior corridor shining through, weirdly levitating mid-air and making a stark contrast to her environment.

Mmmm, how do I get out of here? Obviously I cannot get up to those doors. Maybe there are second doors? I wonder if there are any. I hope not; I don't want to be stuck here.

Ah, well. Better not to think too much. Enjoy it while it lasts. Luna's serious look melted into a playful, cheerful smile as she looked forward to what she could find in this delicate place.

Within a minute of walking away from the door, she noticed how not only the trees were destroyed, but the ground had been sucked out by the wind into the clouds as well.

Luna walked up to the 'Hole' that was left hollow. She looked down into it, but it stretched endlessly, disappearing into the darkness.

Mhm, better hurry. This place is slowly breaking apart. Oh well, what can I do? She shook her head as a light chuckle escaped her mouth.

Jumping over the 'Hole,' she skipped on the snow. As Luna skipped past, she blinked and found herself far past, near the forest, hundreds or even thousands of meters away from the initial doors.

Luna stood frowning, her legs shaking seemingly from exhaustion, her face red as she breathed in and out rapidly. "Where am I?" What? Wait … wait, wait, wait, what's happening?"

She looked around frantically, but the tree line was only barely standing. She realised that she stood in a place where there were hundreds or even thousands of 'Holes' the same as before, stretching endlessly down.

The trees were barely standing; most of them were destroyed, shattered, lying around, and disappearing into the clouds. Only a few stood unchanged in this harsh, snowy land.

Luna was overtaken by sweat as she hurried down through the forest, hoping for something to appear. But the longer she walked through the monotonous forest of old spruce trees, she came to the realization that nothing lives in this land.

There was no sound of any living being, only the sound of the terrifying, harsh wind, and Luna's heartbeat.

The silence was scary.

But Luna couldn't feel scared. She sighed and kept walking forward, past the uprooted trees, destroyed trees, shattered trees.

Each minute that passed, the 'Holes' that Luna passed by grew larger. Eventually, they were no longer small holes; they connected with each other, making traversing the land harder for Luna. She had to either go around or jump over, which she did both. But eventually, she reached a point where there was nothing, an empty void where the land was gone.

So Luna stared into that void far away. Where she stood, there wasn't even any sound of wind, only her heartbeat.

What is this place? There is nothing here. The doors before had at least living animals, but this place is empty, lonely, sad, and any other word explaining sadness that would come to my mind.

I don't like this place. Let's go back-

Luna found herself on a hill tall enough to see the land around and the void that circled it.

Luna stumbled to the ground as she looked at her hands, slippery and sweaty. Her whole body was dripping with sweat; her clothing was wet from it.

"How long have I been walking? What is happening? What is this place?" she said.

"Anyone! Is there anyone here?" she shouted, but was met with silence; even an echo was sucked away by the wind.

No one…

She thought as she looked around. Just as she turned back to see what was behind her, she saw a stone statue far down the hill. Seeing that, Luna rushed towards it, sliding down towards the foothill.

Strangely, there were no 'Holes' near the hill, so Luna thought that she must be near the doors.

As she slid down to the foottop of the statue, she looked at it and saliva stuck in her throat mid-swallow. The stone statue was of a girl. Her arms and legs were thin, her dress simple and seemingly weightless. Her head was buried in her legs, but as Luna walked nearer to see her face, she saw that the girl was portrayed in a state of agony, crying profusely, with a note stuck on one of her tears.

The girl looked like the one from the painting, but Luna couldn't recognise her.

Luna climbed onto the statue and grabbed the note. She folded the paper and placed it into her pocket, but as she did, she stumbled and fell from the statue onto the snow. Luna closed her eyes, bracing for the impact, but the impact never came. She was thrown out of the wooden door frame into the corridor, and the door shut violently behind her.

Luna hit the wall across from the door she flew out of and groaned in pain as she landed on the wooden floor.

She slowly looked up at the doors and mumbled, "W-what?"
