Chapter 47 – The God Osiris
After just a few tentative steps, Hikigaya charged into the forest.
As if provoked, the forest immediately erupted into chaos. These trees… no, they could no longer be called trees. They had become another kind of being that only resembled trees on the surface. It would be more fitting to call them monsters. They swung their branches like limbs and lashed out at Hikigaya.
No one doubted the power contained in what looked like gentle swipes. Everyone present, except for Seishuin Ena, turned and ran almost simultaneously.
Then, under Ena's gaze, Hikigaya disappeared into the sea of trees.
What followed was a scene Ena could no longer see—only Hikigaya could experience it.
Whips lashed at him from all directions, leaving no opening.
In martial arts, there's a technique called the "whip kick," known for its power, and these trees, in terms of material, were far more solid than the human body.
They almost shattered the air with their blows.
Then Hikigaya released his magical energy.
Or rather, qi.
Even top-tier martial artists who know no spells can still stand toe-to-toe with magicians by relying on qi. They've developed their own insights on how to wield this energy.
For example, using the power of qi to create shockwave-like effects for offense and defense.
When branches struck Hikigaya, they couldn't hurt him. Instead, they were met with an even stronger, more destructive recoil force.
The lashing branches disintegrated into dust under this force.
The tree bodies themselves were torn apart easily by Hikigaya.
He was like a super bulldozer, rampaging through the forest unrestrained. Behind him lay the shattered and torn remains of trees.
His body now seemed like a radar—he could sense the presence of a god. That divine aura was deeply attracting him.
But it wasn't an attraction that caused him to lose reason. Rather, it filled him with joy and a desire to fight.
Simply put, he had a strong urge for a fierce battle. No wonder anime characters like Athena say that there isn't a single god-slayer who doesn't want to throw down with a god.
Guided by this aura, Hikigaya hit harder and fiercer. He charged ahead like a hurricane, cutting down the forest in his path. Broken tree trunks and flying wood chips scattered through the air.
Finally, the forest in front of him gave way and no longer attacked him.
Not only that—it began to actively avoid him.
Hikigaya personally demonstrated what it means to carve out a path where there is none.
It seemed that Osiris had completely altered the environment here.
If, shortly after entering, Hikigaya could still tell this was Chiba Village, now he could hardly recognize it. The different species of trees were obvious even to someone like him, who knew nothing about botany.
All kinds of plants were flourishing wildly.
The ground beneath his feet had turned into unmistakable black soil, rich in moisture, looking like it had just been flooded.
At some point, the view ahead opened up—the forest disappeared.
What appeared before him was a vast field.
There wasn't a single person in sight, but it was indeed a wide expanse of farmland. Scattered within the fields were some fruit trees, and livestock could be seen wandering about.
The strangest part was the river flowing from south to north through the center of the field.
It was a fairly wide river. The surface was almost entirely covered with lotus flowers. Near the shallower edges, there were dense grasses, their roots submerged below the water. Hikigaya guessed those were papyrus plants.
That bastard Osiris—could he be planning to build his divine kingdom on this land?
Hikigaya quickly reached the riverbank. The closer he got, the more he could feel the river's vastness.
Even though this was just a temporary creation forcibly made with divine power, it was still astounding.
It was nothing like the giant eyeball he'd encountered before—completely incomparable.
A sharp look flashed in Hikigaya's eyes. He extended his hand, fingers curved into claws, and grasped at the crops nearby. At the same time, magical energy surged out, accompanied by the power of his Authority.
The crops instantly vanished. A whole section of earth was torn up along with them, leaving nothing behind, as if they'd never existed.
But the very next moment, the black soil and crops regenerated at a speed visible to the naked eye.
Truly different from before.
"You've finally come, god-slayer."
The voice came from behind him, along with the rumble of shifting earth and stone.
Hikigaya turned around and saw the vast farmland cracking open, and a man emerged from within.
Green skin, long beard, wearing a crown and Pharaoh's robes, holding a crook and flail—posing exactly like those mummies you'd see lying in coffins.
This man was a god—Osiris. Hikigaya's body told him so.
Even just looking at him, it was obvious. Although the sky didn't change colors and the sun and moon didn't dim, his entrance was grand enough.
Osiris seemed to care a lot about his image. In fact, he wasn't even walking—he was floating. His posture didn't shift an inch throughout the process. You had to admit, this guy knew how to strike a dramatic pose.
Too bad no one was around to take a picture.
When Osiris's feet touched the ground, the earth behind him closed up again with a thunderous roar.
No computer could create this kind of special effect—let alone the fact that it was happening in reality. The impact was beyond anything 3D effects could hope to achieve.
Hikigaya felt like every inch of his skin was about to explode.
Surging divine power came rolling in, compressing and displacing even the air itself.
"You seem ready. I can feel Set's power growing within you," Osiris said, smiling at Hikigaya.
His aura was completely different from Set's. Where Set had felt wild and violent, Osiris felt holy. Though both were equally divine, Osiris's killing intent was much more deeply hidden beneath a calm exterior.
Hikigaya thought it probably had to do with their faces. To be honest, even with green skin, Osiris at least had a human face. That was far less unsettling than Set, who had the head of a dog.
A canine face, full of fangs and drool—even the friendliest expression would still come off as terrifying. If he were on TV, he'd definitely need to be censored.
Remember how terrified Ena was back then? That scene was definitely not suitable for kids.
So yeah, in a world that values appearances, even gods have to compete on looks.
"What a pity. You helped me, after all. But since it's come to this, I have no choice but to destroy you."
Osiris seemed to love that mummy pose. Even about to fight, he wouldn't let it go.
But after saying that, he suddenly vanished—leaving Hikigaya dumbfounded.
"What the hell?"
Hikigaya was truly caught off guard. This Osiris guy wasn't playing by the rules. Weren't they supposed to fight? Where'd he go?
He quickly got his answer.
The ground beneath his feet began to tremble, more and more violently, until even the air shook.
The divine power in the air became increasingly active. Then Hikigaya thought he heard a sound.
He turned his head, puzzled.
From the southern horizon, a continuous white line was rising, stretching across the entire horizon.
"Holy shit!" Hikigaya's face turned so green it was almost the same shade as Osiris's. His mouth followed his thoughts, and he cursed aloud.
Before his profanity could even travel far through the air, the white line that had just crested the horizon surged upward—like a white mountain erupting from the earth.
But it wasn't a mountain—it was a flood!
