A tab appeared from nowhere, taking me by surprise.
"Susu? What is going on?"
Before I could receive an answer, the door suddenly bashed open and making their way in were Aunt Lu, Uncle Lu, Village Chief Yan, and an unfamiliar-looking woman.
"See! I knew they were having an affair!"
**
Upon hearing her words, I was taken aback. Why were they all here?
"Lin Xu! You are so shameless, how dare you act so shameless? In broad daylight, for that matter!" Aunt Lu yelled, her words annoying as always.
"What is going on here? You can't just barge into my house and start yelling at me!" I shouted back. At that point, I was already sick and tired of Aunt Lu's annoying games. What in the world was she doing now?
Upon hearing my words, she started her annoying crying as she collapsed on the floor.
"Ayahh! You all have to bear me witness, even though my nephew disappeared without a trace, that doesn't mean Lin Xu would be so promiscuous... How will I explain to my nephew if he returns one day!"
She cried even more as her husband helped her up, turning to me angrily.
"LIN XU! Is this the reason why you wanted to split from the Lu family? So that you can have your way with men?!"
"Nonsense!" The unfamiliar-looking woman finally said something.
"My son is young, smart, and successful… he won't have anything to do with your wretched daughter-in-law. You better take back your claims because my son is innocent!"
"Ma!" Physician Li said as he walked toward Madame Li.
"Ma! I don't know what is going on here, but Miss Lin and I weren't doing anything. I only came to check up on her son, that's all."
He said, but Aunt Lu rebuked his words immediately.
"LIES! Who are you trying to fool? I and the whole village have been seeing you come into this house back and forth like you own it. Now you claim that you are treating her child… LIES!"
"Physician Li, I respect you a lot, but the rumors that we have been hearing are really concerning… I wonder if it's true. Do you really have feelings for Lin Xu?" Uncle Lu asked.
"W-well… Yes! I do like Lin Xu, but that doesn't mean we are doing anything."
He said, and I just sighed. What an idiot.
"You stupid boy! What is there to like about her? She's so skinny. She already has three kids, Li Tian, three! What other womb does she have to bear you a child? You're so stupid!"
Madame Li scolded, but I felt relieved. At least now he could stop pestering me.
Turning to Aunt Lu, I was ready to give her a piece of my mind when just then, the village chief finally said something.
"T-t-this matter, we need to discuss it more… Lin Xu, set up some chairs outside!" he instructed as he made his way out.
Sighing, I did as instructed, and the next minute we were all seated as Yan Mei and the evil twins joined soon after.
After some time, the village chief finally said, "I know Lin Xu very well… she won't do such a thing, so I refuse to believe your words, Madame Lu." He said, as Aunt Lu just frowned.
He then turned to me.
"But truly, a thought has been on my mind recently, and so Uncle Lu and I have discussed it, and we are thinking of getting you married!"
"WHAT!?" both I and Yan Mei shouted at the same time.
"Pa! Y-you can't…" Yan Mei tried reasoning with her dad, but he cut her off.
"Shut up!" And she did immediately.
"Village Chief Yan, what do you mean get married? Am I not already married?"
"Hmm… I know you are, but Yan Mei, speak truthfully to yourself. You may be married, but all these years you have never even lived with your husband."
"After your wedding, the next day Mo Yong just disappeared into thin air, and for eight good years you have been taking care of the children by yourself. It is unfair to watch you grow old alone and struggle all by yourself… that's why your uncle and I think it's best to get you remarried as soon as possible!"
He explained, his words stinging me hard. Of course, I understood his point, but getting married has never been on my to-do list. Back in my past life and even now.
Damn! These old people and their mentality. How I wish I could explain to them how in the future even without getting married you could still live happily. In fact, marriage is draining.
Facing Uncle Lu and Aunt Lu, I could already see the sneaky smiles on their faces. Obviously, all of this was their foolish plan, but now that the village chief had gotten involved, it wouldn't be so easy to escape.
"In that case, who then would I marry?" I asked.
"Well… Your uncle and I did some thinking, and I was hoping for you to wed Physician Li since he is young and he likes you!"
"No!" I immediately refused. "I'm not getting married to him, anyone else but him!" I said bluntly without faking anything.
His mother doesn't know me but already dislikes me and even my innocent kids. He even seems to be a mama's boy. No way. I'm not getting married into that already chaotic family, absolutely not.
"Y-y-you wench! Who do you think you are to refuse! You should be thankful that my son is a choice, and here you are refusing… how dare you!" Madame Li stood up, ready to charge at me, but Li Tian held her before she could do anything.
"Ma! What do you think you are doing? Stop it!" he said as he then faced me. He wanted to say something but kept quiet instead.
Sighing, Village Chief Yan then said to me, "Since you don't want Physician Li, then what about your Uncle Lu's choice?"
He said as all eyes, including mine, then turned to him.
"Cough! Well, after some thought… there is someone who is interested in getting married to you."
"And who's that?"
"Big Man Lou!"
"What?"
