Chapter 20: Essence Beyond Beauty and Walking the Path of Shadows
The storm of cultivation had calmed.
After a silent, soul-shaking breakthrough that shook his inner world but left the outside undisturbed—thanks to the Breakthrough Barrier—Ye Ling had finally stepped into the Void Formation Realm.
Sitting in the heart of the Forbidden Abyss Ruins, veiled beneath a cliff of shattered starlight stones, Ye Ling remained motionless. His long black robes fluttered slightly in the void breeze, while faint violet-gold ripples shimmered through the space around him. His breathing was steady, silent as if in rhythm with the heavens themselves.
Yet despite reaching this new realm, he didn't immediately rush forward with his cultivation.
Instead, he closed his eyes again.
Stabilization.
This was the most overlooked yet vital step after every major breakthrough in cultivation. The Void Formation Realm was not just a step forward—it was a complete transformation. The dantian transformed into a Void Core, capable of manipulating spatial force, essence, and qi with far greater control. But such a core, if left unstable, would eventually collapse under its own weight during battles or deep cultivation.
"Just as a building needs a strong foundation, a cultivator's realm must be solid like a mountain, not hollow like a reed," Ye Ling whispered internally.
With his supreme control, honed over countless lifetimes, he began the stabilization process. Threads of Void Essence flowed through his meridians like celestial rivers. His bones subtly glowed, and his soul sank into a deeper resonance with the heavenly laws.
One full day passed.
Only after his Void Core no longer fluctuated even slightly—solidified into a perfect crystalline sphere of abyssal-black and starry gold—did Ye Ling slowly open his eyes.
In that moment, if anyone could have seen him, they'd have mistaken him for a true immortal. But no one did.
The Breakthrough Barrier continued to veil everything.
Yet, his divine sense gently stretched out again. He turned his attention back to the group of cultivators he had noticed earlier.
Even from over a hundred kilometers away, his spiritual sense was like the eyes of a divine eagle. Nothing escaped him.
The cultivators were still cautiously moving through the ruins. Their formation hadn't changed much, still rotating defensively around that central figure—the young princess.
Though she was encircled by powerful Nascent Soul Realm guards and even one Divine Formation Realm cultivator, Ye Ling's gaze didn't linger on their cracked armor or wearied expressions.
His attention was fixed solely on her.
Not because of her beauty—though she was breathtaking by mortal standards.
She wore robes spun of flowing blue silk, embroidered with phoenix feathers and starlight threads. Her raven-black hair was tied into an imperial bun, adorned with a lotus crown. Her pale skin seemed to emit a faint luminescence, and her eyes, though calm, carried a hidden storm within.
But Ye Ling had seen women far more beautiful than her. In his past life, he had been courted by celestial maidens, holy saintesses, and immortal empresses alike—each trying to bind their fate to his through the sacred Dao Companion bond.
He had refused them all.
To him, Dao Companions were nothing but distractions. A cultivator walks a lonely path, and emotional entanglements, no matter how pure, only slowed the pursuit of eternity.
But this time, something was different.
Not her appearance. But… her Essence of Life.
It was radiant.
Vast, pure, and undistorted by karmic taint or worldly bindings.
"Interesting…" Ye Ling narrowed his eyes, focusing his spiritual vision.
To a mortal, life essence was unseen. To ordinary cultivators, it was barely sensed. But to someone like Ye Ling—especially after his recent breakthrough—he could see it like a second sun hovering above a soul.
And this girl… her life essence glowed violet with strands of golden fate, tinged with the primordial essence of the stars.
In the mortal world, this was beyond rare—it was unprecedented.
Essence of Life determined more than just how long one lived. It shaped destiny, talent, karma, and potential. Some cultivators were born with dim, flickering essence—destined to live ordinary lives. Others had slightly brighter ones, indicating talent or noble heritage.
But this girl?
Hers was like a blooming Dao Lotus, existing in perfect harmony with the heavens yet untouched by them.
"She… isn't even 200 years old," Ye Ling whispered.
In the mortal world, that was still considered young, especially for someone already at Nascent Soul Realm Stage 8. But it wasn't just her realm—it was the depth of her potential that struck him.
From her cultivation pattern, life essence resonance, and faint aura… Ye Ling could tell.
She was one of those rare souls born for the Dao.
In another few decades, she might become the youngest Divine Formation cultivator in the entire mortal realm—perhaps even challenge the threshold to the Immortal Realms… if she survived.
"…No wonder they protect her with such desperation," Ye Ling thought.
He now looked at the other cultivators more closely.
Indeed, their armor bore the sigils of royalty. Cracked chest plates, torn sleeves, exposed qi channels—clear signs of a recent battle.
The Divine Formation cultivator, though hiding his wound well, was bleeding internally. His bloodline was different. Not Ye Clan, not any nearby empire.
"Foreign royalty. Possibly from the Inner Territories," Ye Ling mused.
And yet… even with such a powerful escort, they moved cautiously. Slowly. Avoiding noise. Their formation always adapted to block any wind current that might reveal their position.
Ye Ling nodded internally. They feared disturbing the ancient beings that slumbered in the depths of this ruin.
"Smart," he said with an amused smile. "But still… too slow. At that pace, they'll take days to reach the shrine."
He no longer looked at them with mere curiosity.
That girl's essence had stirred something deep within him—not emotion, but inquiry.
He wanted to know what she carried. What destiny followed her. What sect or background had birthed such a flawless vessel.
And… if she would become his ally, his threat, or something else entirely.
Walking the Path of Shadows
Two full days had passed.
For ordinary cultivators, it was but a blink of time. Yet within the Forbidden Abyss Ruins, every step forward felt like a dance along the edge of death.
The group of elite cultivators—one Divine Formation Realm protector and several Nascent Soul Realm guards—moved through the desolate landscape like wary ghosts, their steps light, their breaths suppressed, their spiritual senses fully expanded yet shrouded.
They had drawn closer to the ancient shrine, a place whispered about in old imperial texts, said to be the remnants of a world lost to time. But reaching it was not a matter of distance—it was a trial of will, caution, and endurance.
On the first day, just hours into their travel, they encountered the Demonized Soul Fog.
It had come without warning—a pale gray mist that slithered between broken pillars and floating stones like a silent predator. When it touched the ground, grass withered. When it brushed stone, cracks formed. But when it crept close to the guards…
Screams tore through the silence.
One of the Nascent Soul Realm guards lost control for a moment. His pupils turned pitch-black, his veins bulged, and dark mist began seeping from his orifices. It took three other guards and the Divine Formation Realm protector to forcibly suppress him.
"Seal his spirit! Cut off his connection to the outside world! Don't let the fog infect the rest of us!" the protector commanded, his voice sharp with urgency.
The group formed a temporary barrier using spiritual artifacts, creating a dome of shimmering golden light. But the fog pressed against it like a living creature, swirling, testing, whispering…
"Come closer… burn your soul… devour fate… join us…"
Each voice came from a different direction, old and cold and hungry.
The group didn't rest that night.
Even inside their defensive formation, no one dared sleep. They took turns meditating with eyes half-open, fingers clutching talismans and weapons, expressions stiff with hidden fear.
Yet through it all, she remained unmoved.
The young princess stood at the center of the group, draped in her phoenix-blue robes, her posture straight, her gaze steady. Her hands clasped behind her back, she studied the Demonized Fog not with terror—but with detachment, as if it were no more than a minor annoyance.
Her violet-golden eyes never blinked.
"Princess, please return to the inner barrier," one guard whispered.
She said nothing.
Her gaze remained fixed outward as the fog recoiled, then dissipated as dawn broke. No one understood why it fled. Perhaps it was the first rays of celestial light. Or perhaps… it was her presence.
---
On the second day, they faced a different peril.
Spatial Cracks.
Invisible to the naked eye, they lurked like traps across the fractured terrain. One misstep, one careless leap—and a cultivator would be sliced into fragments, body and soul torn into pieces across dimensions.
They first noticed the danger when a spirit beast they had tamed for scouting purposes—a three-tailed shadow hound—suddenly vanished mid-run. Not a scream. Not a puff of blood. Just… gone.
"Don't move!" the protector commanded.
He extended his divine sense forward. Then his expression changed.
A ripple shimmered in the air ahead—like a transparent curtain fluttering in a nonexistent breeze. Only with the Divine Formation Realm's senses could such danger be perceived.
"Spatial instability. A rift. Possibly more than one."
They began weaving around the traps like dancers in a deadly performance.
The Nascent Soul guards grew pale with tension. Sweat beaded their foreheads. Some began muttering protective incantations under their breath, while others continuously activated spirit tokens to create temporary pathways.
But their luck ran out mid-afternoon.
One of the older guards stepped too close to a spatial seam.
A thin, vertical line of black light suddenly split the air behind him.
A crack.
By the time he turned around, his arm had been cleanly severed. Blood gushed, his scream echoed, and the group quickly scrambled to retreat as the crack expanded in hunger.
"Close the seam with void suppression talismans! Don't let it grow!" the protector barked.
A series of glowing runes exploded in the air, slowing the crack's growth. The Divine Formation Realm expert stepped forward, pressing his hand into the rift, channeling his core essence to forcefully collapse the unstable space.
The effort left him coughing blood.
Still, he turned and resumed guarding the princess without complaint.
"...We will make it," he whispered.
Yet even he was beginning to show signs of wear. His armor, previously immaculate, now bore deep gashes. His aura flickered with instability. And his breaths were slower… heavier.
---
Evening approached again.
Now, as they neared the shrine, the atmosphere grew still. Too still.
There were no beasts. No fog. No rifts. No sound at all.
And it was this absolute silence that terrified them most.
One of the younger guards clenched his jaw. "It's too quiet…"
The protector nodded, one hand resting on the hilt of his golden glaive. "This part of the Forbidden Zone… it devours all noise. Even the wind dares not howl here."
Suddenly, one of their barrier talismans cracked with a sharp snap.
Everyone froze.
But no threat emerged. The talisman had merely broken on its own. Or perhaps… something had watched them, judged them, and decided—for now—to let them live.
Despite their exhaustion, the formation remained solid. The guards rotated positions. No gaps were left uncovered. Even now, they did not slacken.
They were cultivators of the imperial lineage. To guard the princess was their duty—to the death.
But while the guards trembled beneath the invisible pressure of the zone, she still did not flinch.
The young princess stood like an empress incarnate, her presence untouched by fear or fatigue. Her violet eyes now gazed at the outline of the ancient shrine visible in the distance, half-shrouded in ash and broken stars.
Its doors remained shut.
But something within… called to her.
And far above, sitting atop a distant cliff cloaked in shadows and swirling spatial dust, Ye Ling opened his eyes.
"They've finally arrived."
