Chapter 67 - Chapter 67: Li Chu’s Misstep – The Emotional Breaking Point

The city buzzed with activity, but for Li Chu, it was as though the world had slowed to a crawl. The distant echoes of sirens were muffled, the flashing lights no longer illuminating the night with the same intensity. In the midst of the chaos, her thoughts were fragmented, a thousand questions swirling in her mind. It had all started when she had followed Lin Chen into the heart of the city, unaware that she was about to become part of something far bigger than herself.

Li Chu had been walking along the street when the first shot rang out. The air had been crisp, the usual noises of the city blending together in a hum. But then, the ground beneath her feet had seemed to shake, a tremor that signaled something was wrong. People screamed as they scrambled for cover, but Li Chu had been frozen in place, the sight of Lin Chen—his figure darting across the street, his speed almost unnatural—capturing her attention completely.

She had never seen him like this before. The person who had always been so composed, so calm, was now a blur of motion, too fast for the naked eye to track. The world around him seemed to distort, his every movement calculated and precise, and yet, beneath it all, there was something frighteningly unpredictable about him.

Li Chu hadn't realized it at the time, but in that moment, she had crossed a threshold. She had witnessed Lin Chen in a way few others ever would. She had seen his power, his abilities, things that should have been impossible to comprehend in a world like theirs. It had been a whirlwind of movement and sound. Lin Chen had been surrounded by enemies, menacing figures with technology she couldn't begin to understand, their weapons drawn. The chase had been relentless.

But then she saw him use that power—the way he had manipulated the environment with his sheer will, bending the space around him like it was clay. The motorcycles had come, the riders fast and precise, and then, as if the world had paused for a split second, Lin Chen had disappeared. He was there one moment and gone the next.

Li Chu's heart pounded in her chest. She had been so close, so very close to the danger, but what unsettled her the most was the fact that Lin Chen hadn't even noticed her standing there, lost in the chaos. He had been too focused on the battle, too immersed in the hunt. The distance between them had widened, both physically and emotionally. She was no longer a part of his world in the way she once thought she could be.

"What are you?" she muttered under her breath, her voice barely audible over the city's noise.

Her mind raced back to the first time they had met. Back then, Lin Chen had been nothing more than a kind-hearted, ordinary man—someone she could trust, someone who had listened to her in a world that had never made sense. But now? Now, he was something... different.

As the smoke from the explosions cleared, and the last of the motorcycles were taken down, the street fell silent. Li Chu didn't even know when she started walking toward Lin Chen. Her legs moved almost involuntarily, and before she could stop herself, she found herself standing in front of him.

Lin Chen had been facing away from her, breathing heavily, his expression unreadable. For a brief moment, his eyes flickered as he sensed her presence, but he didn't turn. She could feel the weight of his power, even now. His figure loomed tall and imposing, his energy palpable. The very air around him seemed to hum with barely restrained force.

Li Chu opened her mouth to speak, but the words seemed to catch in her throat. She wanted to ask him—wanted to scream at him—demand answers. But all that came out was a soft, trembling question.

"Are you… human?" Her voice cracked as the question slipped out. The moment the words left her lips, she regretted them. She knew the answer, didn't she? But it didn't stop the flood of emotions from crashing over her.

Lin Chen's eyes shifted toward her, his expression unreadable as always. For a brief moment, time seemed to stand still. The weight of the world around them seemed to disappear. The flashing lights, the burning streets, the people—everything faded, leaving only the two of them standing in the wreckage.

Li Chu's heart raced as she watched him, waiting for his answer. She could see the conflict in his eyes, the struggle between the truth he was forced to carry and the lie he had tried so desperately to maintain.

"I…" He began, his voice low and controlled. "I'm not sure anymore."

Li Chu felt a pang in her chest. He wasn't denying it. He wasn't denying that he was something more than human, that he had powers far beyond her comprehension. He had always been distant, but now she realized that distance was something more—something he couldn't bridge.

Her emotions welled up, and before she knew it, she was shouting at him, her voice sharp with frustration and hurt.

"You never told me! You never said anything! Why—why didn't you tell me the truth?" Her words were harsh, but they came from a place of vulnerability, a place she couldn't control. "Do you even see me? Or am I just a pawn in your game?"

Lin Chen flinched, and for the first time in what felt like forever, Li Chu saw something close to pain in his eyes. But it was fleeting, gone as quickly as it had appeared. He stepped forward, his voice soft but firm.

"You don't understand, Li Chu. I didn't want you to be dragged into this. I didn't want you to know. But now..." He stopped, his gaze shifting away from her. "Now, it's too late."

For a moment, Li Chu was silent, her chest tightening with a mixture of anger and heartbreak. She had always known that something about Lin Chen wasn't right, that there was more to him than met the eye. But this—this was a truth that shattered her understanding of everything.

Her voice faltered as she spoke again, quieter this time. "I don't know who you are anymore, Lin Chen. I don't know who I am in your world. Maybe I was never meant to be a part of it."

Lin Chen didn't respond. He simply stood there, his face masked by the weight of his secrets. Li Chu could feel the distance between them growing, an insurmountable chasm that neither of them could cross.

And in that moment, she realized the truth. She had always been chasing a shadow, and now, she was lost in it.
