Later that night, the rain intensified, accompanied by rumbling thunder.
After taking a shower in the second-floor room he had been assigned, Hayashi Yoshiki walked to the window to inspect its condition. Then, with a smile, he turned and sat down on the bed.
It wasn't time yet.
He took a book from his suitcase and lay down to read.
There was no signal on this island. The only way to contact the outside world was a radio located in the warehouse next to the cabin. Not even texting was an option here.
As Yoshiki read, his eyes scanned the words, while his mind wandered elsewhere.
Jodie Starling…
Even if that woman confirmed the hospital director at Beika Hospital was a spy for the Organization, emotionally, she probably still couldn't believe James Black was a traitor.
After all, he had been her guide into the FBI—almost like a guardian figure.
But she wasn't a fool.
Even if her heart couldn't accept James's betrayal, her rational side would at least begin to suspect him.
How could I make her truly see the darkness in James?
If Jodie Starling exposed James's betrayal herself, she might even be promoted to take over his position… though there was also a high chance the FBI would appoint someone new altogether.
Yoshiki had no interest in meddling with the FBI directly.
But whether it was through the FBI or Public Security, he wanted to ensure he always had access to first-hand intel.
He had once considered working with James.
The man was clever and sharp—hard to manipulate, but also easy to deal with in certain ways. Still, after weighing the options, Yoshiki had decided to abandon that idea.
Time ticked by.
Eventually, Yoshiki closed the book, turned off the light, and lay down to rest.
Rain continued to fall outside.
A flash of lightning lit up the curtains, and for a brief moment, a human shadow was projected across them.
Tokitsu Junya's eyes burned with murderous intent.
Once he returned home, his reputation would be utterly ruined. He couldn't accept that!
Why did this happen to me?
Why do they get to have such talent and fame, and not me?
Initially, proud to represent the North in this special event, Tokitsu had always thought highly of himself. But once he felt the gap between himself and others, his inferiority, envy, and the fear of social death pushed him to extremes.
The boat picking them up wouldn't arrive for another four days.
If he destroyed the radio before then, they wouldn't be able to contact the outside world tomorrow…
Tokitsu's eyes gleamed darkly.
If it hadn't been for this storm, he would've set the whole place on fire and burned everyone alive.
But once the rain stopped, it would be too late.
He could just destroy the radio and force everyone to stay—but that would only arouse Hayashi Yoshiki's suspicion.
So he had to strike now.
The storm would help cover his movements.
Using tools, he climbed up to Yoshiki's window and removed not just the glass but the entire frame. He had already tampered with several rooms' windows earlier while everyone was downstairs eating and playing cards.
Soaking wet, Tokitsu Junya silently slipped into Yoshiki's room under the cover of night.
Seeing the figure lying on the bed, he crept forward, his face twisted with rage as he raised the hammer in his hand.
But just as he was about to strike—
Hayashi Yoshiki opened his eyes.
Around 11:30 PM.
Heiji Hattori and Conan were already lying down in the neighboring room, enjoying a rare moment of rest together.
Suddenly, they both heard the faint sound of shattering glass and sat up in alarm.
"What was that?"
"You heard it too?"
Still groggy, they exchanged a glance—at first assuming a window had broken from the storm. But then came the faint sound of a scream.
"…It's from Yoshiki-nii's room!"
Conan immediately jumped out of bed.
Heiji didn't hesitate.
As they rushed into the hallway, Hakuba Saguru emerged as well.
The three shared a look—then bolted straight for Hayashi Yoshiki's room.
Bang! Bang!
BANG BANG BANG!
"Hey! Are you okay, Yoshiki?!"
"Yoshiki-kun!!"
Their loud knocking quickly attracted the attention of Koshimizu Nanatsuki and Tsuchio Hiroo from the neighboring rooms.
"What happened?"
"No idea! We suddenly heard glass shatter—and a scream!" Conan shouted, looking pale.
Nanatsuki tensed immediately.
Just as Heiji stepped back, preparing to ram the door—
It swung open.
"I'll break down the—whoa!!"
Heiji crashed straight through the doorway and stumbled into the room, landing flat on his face.
As he scrambled up, the scene that greeted him made his eyes go wide in shock.
The others rushed in behind him.
The window in Hayashi Yoshiki's room was gone.
"What happened?!"
"It was Tokitsu. He climbed in through the window, tried to attack me with this, but I caught him and took it. He escaped through the window."
Yoshiki held up the hammer, the blood on its head making everyone's pupils contract.
"Whose blood is that…?"
"Wait—Mr. Tsuchio! Where is he?!"
"He's still out there! That bastard Tokitsu—!"
Conan immediately thought of Tsuchio Hiroo, while Heiji, standing near the window, spotted Tokitsu running toward the woods.
Without hesitation, Heiji jumped out the window.
Yoshiki and the others quickly rushed downstairs to follow.
Outside, the downpour continued relentlessly.
Pitter-patter! Pitter-patter!
The heavy rain stung as it hit their skin, obscuring their vision.
Tokitsu Junya fled into the forest in a panic.
He hadn't expected Hayashi Yoshiki to be awake. Just as he brought down the hammer, Yoshiki had kicked him back and completely overturned his plan.
He had already killedTsuchio Hiroo.
Now, he was a murderer—he couldn't be caught.
"Don't even think of escaping!"
Heiji Hattori's voice tore through the rain.
BOOM!
Lightning lit up the woods, revealing shadows of the detectives in pursuit.
Tokitsu cried out in terror.
He tripped, fell, scrambled up again—directionless and desperate. Instinctively, he ran toward the port they had arrived at earlier, only to find himself facing the raging sea.
He froze.
Then slowly turned around in panic.
Heiji had caught up.
A step behind, Yoshiki and the others arrived too.
"You vile scum!"
Soaked to the bone, his face twisted and pale, Tokitsu Junya stood trembling.
The righteous high school detectives couldn't contain their disgust. A fellow detective who tried to murder Hayashi Yoshiki under cover of night—it was unforgivable.
"Stay back—!"
As they closed in, Tokitsu grabbed a shovel that had inexplicably been left at the dock and brandished it with a shout.
CRACK!
Another bolt of lightning flashed.
Standing with his back to the ocean, Tokitsu glared at them, yelling something unintelligible over the crashing waves and thunder.
He waved the shovel frantically, trying to intimidate them.
Then—Conan noticed a faint glow coming from the metal surface.
His eyes widened sharply behind his glasses.
That glow was real.
"GET BACK!!!"
Ignoring the danger, Conan screamed a warning—but his voice was swallowed by the storm.
Tokitsu raised the shovel and appeared ready to charge.
But the next second—
A blinding light exploded before their eyes.
BOOM!!!
A deafening thunderclap tore through the sky.
Then—Tokitsu Junya's body collapsed to the ground.
