Chapter 16 - Fractured Bonds

...

Liam's expression darkened, his eyes flashing with a mix of anger and pain.

"That's none of your business, Mother," he said, his voice low and even, but with a hint of venom.

"My feelings are mine to deal with, not yours to question or manipulate."

The air between them was thick with tension, the silence that followed heavy with unspoken words and unresolved conflicts.

Evelyn's eyes seemed to bore into Liam's soul, as if searching for something she didn't want to find.

Liam's jaw clenched, his fists tightening at his sides.

He felt trapped, suffocated by his mother's expectations and the weight of his family's legacy.

He knew he had to tread carefully, but he couldn't help the anger and resentment that bubbled up inside him.

"I'm not going to discuss this further, Mother," Liam said finally, his voice firm. "I need some time to think, to figure out what's best for me. And I need you to respect my boundaries."

Evelyn's expression turned glacial, her voice icy. "Fine, Liam. But don't think for a moment that you can just disregard your responsibilities and obligations.

You have a duty to this family, and you will fulfill it."

Liam walked out of the living room, the silence between them thick with unspoken words.

He made his way to his bedroom, slamming the door shut behind him. The sound echoed through the hallway, a declaration of his frustration.

He paced back and forth across the room, his mind racing with thoughts of his mother, Sophia, and the engagement. He felt trapped, like he was living a life predetermined by others.

Liam stopped pacing and looked out the window, staring into the darkness.

Liam's eyes remained fixed on the darkness outside, his mind consumed by the question his mother had posed.

"Was he still in love with Ivy?"

The mere mention of her name had stirred up a mix of emotions within him.

He thought back to the memories they had shared, the laughter, the tears, the moments of pure joy.

Ivy had been his world, his everything, until she betrayed his trust and now she was gone..

...

Ruby settled into her routine, resuming her final year studies after the brief break because of the Art competition.

As she settled into her seat, Ruby felt a sense of calm wash over her.

Her mind wandered back to the gala and her encounter with Liam.

She thought about her encounter with Liam and the emotions that seemed to simmer beneath the surface.

Ruby wondered if she would ever see him again or if their paths would cross in different context.

The competition had been a welcome distraction from her studies, and Ruby was glad to have had the opportunity to showcase her art.

However, the experience had also brought up some challenges, particularly with her coursemate Dani. The tension between them still lingered, and Ruby hoped that things would settle down soon.

Just then Mrs Thompson, her lecturer who had entered the bustling classroom, began discussing the importance of themes in art.

Mrs Thompson's voice filled the classroom drawing Ruby's attention.

"Themes in art are crucial, as they add depth and meaning to your work. I want you all to think about the message you want to convey through your art."

As Ruby's lecturer continued to discuss themes in art, Ruby's mind began to explore different ideas.

She thought about the emotions she wanted to convey through her art, the stories she wanted to tell.

Her encounter with Liam had sparked a curiosity in her, a desire to understand the complexities of human emotions.

Liam, on the other hand, was still trapped in his thoughts, unable to shake off the weight of his family's expectations.

He felt like he was living a life that wasn't his own, a life predetermined by others.

The question of whether he still loved Ivy lingered in his mind, a constant reminder of the pain and betrayal he had felt.

As the days turned into weeks, Ruby's art began to take shape, reflecting her emotions and experiences. Liam, however, felt like he was losing himself, suffocated by the demands of his family and the engagement to Sophia.

The contrast between their lives was stark, yet both were searching for a way to break free and forge their own paths.

The connection between Ruby and Liam remained, a subtle thread that would eventually bring them together in unexpected ways.

'For now, they continued on their separate journeys, each navigating the complexities of their own lives'.

...

Evelyn's phone rang, shrill in the silence of the mansion.

She hesitated before answering, her voice measured. "Hello?"

Julian's voice was on the other end, his tone smooth and calculating. "Evelyn, darling. How's Liam? Is he on board with the plan?"

Evelyn's expression turned guarded, her eyes darting around the room. "Julian, we've discussed this. Liam's not interested in the marriage arrangement."

Julian's laughter was low and menacing. "Oh, I'm sure he'll come around once he realizes what's at stake. You just need to... encourage him, Evelyn. You know how to handle him."

As Julian's words hung in the air, Evelyn's composure began to slip.

"Julian, I... I'll try," Evelyn said, her voice barely above a whisper. "But you need to understand, Liam's not a puppet to be controlled. He has his own thoughts and feelings."

Julian's voice remained calm, but a hint of steel crept in. "I'm doing this for our family's future, Evelyn. This is the only way for our family to be complete."

Evelyn's eyes narrowed, her mind racing with the weight of Julian's words.

"I understand, Julian," Evelyn said, her voice measured. "But perhaps we should consider Liam's feelings in this matter. He's not a child, after all."

Julian's laughter was cold, his tone dripping with condescension.

"Feelings? Evelyn, you're not thinking clearly. Liam's feelings are irrelevant. What's important is the future of our family, and the alliances we need to secure it."

"I'll do what I can, Julian," Evelyn said finally, her voice flat. "But I need you to understand that Liam's not going to be easily swayed. He's stubborn, and he has a mind of his own."

Julian's voice remained calm, but a hint of warning crept in. "I'm counting on you, Evelyn. Don't disappoint me."

The line went dead, leaving Evelyn standing alone in the silence of the mansion, her mind racing with the weight of her own complicity.

For a moment, she wondered if she'd lost herself in the process of holding their family together.

The silence was oppressive, punctuated only by the soft ticking of the clock in the living room.

Evelyn's eyes drifted to the clock, its rhythmic pulse a reminder that time was running out. She knew she had to make a choice, but the question was, which path would she take?...
