Chapter 35 - "The Jester's Wrath"

The jungle changed.

The bone-white trees became black — not burned, but rotted, as if the life had been drained from them centuries ago. The ground became soft, spongy, covered in a thin layer of ash that puffed up with every step. The air smelled of old blood and older decay.

Vexxa walked beside the Plague Mask. Her fists were still bandaged, her knuckles still raw from punching the Grave Mind. The bone key hung from his belt, cracked but still glowing faintly.

"How much further?" she asked.

The Plague Mask stopped. Pointed.

Through the dead trees, she saw it.

The Hive.

Not a building. Not a nest. A mountain of fused flesh, bone, and chitin — pulsing, breathing, growing. It rose from the earth like a tumor, its surface covered in eyes that blinked at different rhythms, mouths that whispered different lies, hands that clawed at the air for something to hold.

And at the base of the Hive, a figure waited.

The Celestial Jester.

He was not laughing now.

The Jester stood motionless before the Hive's entrance — a tear in the flesh-mountain that led into darkness. His void-body was still, his three white slits fixed on the approaching figures.

His hands — those too-long, too-many-jointed fingers — were clasped behind his back.

He did not hover. He stood. His feet touched the rotting ground.

"You should not be here," he said. His voice was not a voice. It was a collapse — pulling sound toward it, swallowing light.

Vexxa cracked her neck. "And yet, here we are."

"The Grave Mind's prison could not hold you."

"It had shit security."

The Jester's white slits narrowed.

"You think this is a game."

Vexxa stepped forward. "I think you're standing between me and something I want to understand."

The Plague Mask raised a hand — stopping her.

"We came for answers," he said. "Not a fight."

The Jester tilted his head. The void where his face should be rippled.

"Answers. You want answers."

He took a step forward.

The ground cracked.

Not a crack — a fracture. The earth split open between them, a jagged line of black nothing that stretched for a hundred yards in both directions. Rotting trees fell into the chasm. Ash clouds rose.

Vexxa stumbled back. The Plague Mask stood firm.

"You want to know what the Hive is?" the Jester said. His voice was louder now — not shouting, but expanding, filling the air, pressing against their ears.

"You want to know what the Grave Mind wants?"

Another step.

Another earthquake.

The ground heaved — a wave of dirt and rock and rotting roots that lifted them off their feet and slammed them down. The Hive behind him pulsed, its eyes opening wider, its mouths whispering faster.

"I will tell you."

The Jester raised his arms.

The sky cracked.

Lightning — black lightning, wrong lightning — tore across the sky. Thunder followed — not sound, but pressure, compressing the air, making their lungs burn.

"The Hive is not the enemy," the Jester roared. His void-face was no longer calm. The white slits were wide, burning with ancient fury.

"The Hive is a symptom. A wound. An infection that grew from something older."

He pointed at the flesh-mountain behind him.

"The Grave Mind was the first. The original. It consumed its own siblings — other void-beings, other gods of absence. It ate them until only it remained."

Another earthquake. The ground split again — wider this time. Vexxa grabbed a tree root to keep from falling.

"We — the Jesters, the Void Sisters, the Hive — we are not its servants. We are its children. Its waste. The parts of it that broke off and became something else."

The Plague Mask spoke — his voice calm, cutting through the chaos.

"Then why warn us? Why send the Void Sisters to deliver a message?"

The Jester's white slits glowed.

"Because the Grave Mind is waking. And when it wakes… it will eat everything. The Hive. The Void Sisters. Me."

His voice dropped — quieter, but more terrible.

"Everything."

Vexxa stepped forward. "Then help us. Tell us how to stop it."

The Jester laughed.

Not a happy laugh. A broken laugh — the sound of something that had been screaming for centuries and had forgotten how to stop.

"Stop it? You cannot stop it. You cannot fight it. You cannot even run from it."

He raised his fist.

The ground exploded.

Not a crack. Not a fracture. An upheaval — a wave of earth and rock and rotting trees that surged outward from his feet, flattening everything in a hundred-yard radius.

Vexxa was thrown backward, slamming into a tree. The Plague Mask dug his blade into the ground, holding himself in place.

"The Grave Mind does not fight. It consumes. Reality. Matter. Energy. Souls. Everything within its range becomes food."

Another earthquake — stronger. The Hive behind him screamed, its mouths opening wide, its eyes weeping black tears.

"When it wakes, your world will last seven days. Seven days of screaming. Seven days of unmaking. And then… nothing."

He lowered his fist.

The earthquakes stopped.

Silence.

The Jester stood in the center of the destruction, his void-body somehow calm again, his white slits fixed on them.

"I cannot stop it. But I can… delay it."

Vexxa pushed herself up, wincing. "Delay it how?"

"The Hive feeds on power. Cosmic power. The kind that flows through your brother's armor." He looked at the Plague Mask. "The kind that came from the Zerion fight. Every time a god bleeds, the Grave Mind drinks."

He stepped closer.

"If you want more time… stop fighting. Stop using power. Hide. Let the Hive starve."

The Plague Mask's grip tightened on his blade.

"And if we don't?"

The Jester's white slits narrowed.

"Then the Grave Mind wakes in seven days. And everyone you love… dies screaming."

He turned away.

"Now leave. Before I change my mind and kill you myself."

Vexxa grabbed the Plague Mask's arm. "We need to go. Now."

He didn't move. His masked face was fixed on the Jester's back.

"Kur-Bai'el." She used his real name. "We can't fight him here. Not now. Not alone."

Slowly, he nodded.

They retreated into the rotting trees.

Behind them, the Jester stood motionless before the Hive.

But as they disappeared into the darkness, they heard it — a sound they would never forget.

Laughter.

Broken. Hollow. Endless.

The sun was setting when they returned.

Stella stood at the gate of the bone cathedral, arms crossed, her mild bruises faded to faint yellow. She saw them coming — Vexxa limping, the Plague Mask silent, both covered in ash and dirt.

"You look like hell," she said.

Vexxa snorted. "Felt like it too."

Atlas appeared behind Stella — his Mythralite arm repaired, his lungs clear, his one good eye sharp.

"What happened?"

The Plague Mask walked past him. Didn't stop. Didn't speak.

Atlas grabbed his arm.

"I asked you a question."

The Plague Mask froze.

For a long moment, no one moved.

Then — slowly — the Plague Mask turned.

His masked face was inches from Atlas's.

"The Grave Mind wakes in seven days," he said. His voice was low. Barely a whisper. "And there is nothing we can do to stop it."

He pulled his arm free.

Walked into the cathedral.

Atlas stood there, staring after him.

Stella put her hand on his shoulder.

"We have seven days," she said. "Let's use them."

The Final Image

Deep within the bone cathedral, the Plague Mask knelt before the altar.

His mask was off.

His face — scarred, ancient, human — was wet with tears.

He whispered to no one:

"I'm sorry, Atlas. I couldn't protect you. I couldn't protect anyone."

He put the mask back on.

And began to plan.
