Episode 12: The Crystal's Secret
Master Ju gathered all the academy students in the sprawling courtyard at dawn, his staff glowing faintly with an ancient light. The air buzzed with excitement and tension as the students speculated about the task ahead.
"Today," Master Ju began, his voice echoing across the courtyard, "you will embark on a challenge that will test not just your strength but your knowledge and wit. You are tasked with locating one of the legendary elemental crystals—the Crystal of Light."
The students gasped collectively. Tales of the elemental crystals were woven deeply into the history of the academy. These powerful relics were said to be fragments of the Red Pearl, each imbued with immense energy.
Master Ju continued, "The Crystal of Light is hidden within the High Peak Caverns. Many have sought it, but few have succeeded. It is not a test of power but one of understanding and resourcefulness. The crystal will only reveal itself to those who prove worthy."
Ryu stood at the back, her arms crossed, trying to avoid the sharp glances from her peers. Kai nudged her, whispering, "Do you think we even stand a chance? They probably hid it on the moon for all we know."
"Shh!" Ryu hissed back, trying not to smile. Despite Kai's constant jokes, she felt a strange sense of determination. She couldn't shake the feeling that she'd come across something similar before.

The Journey Begins
The students set off in groups, each led by a senior mentor. Ryu and Kai found themselves paired with three other students, none too thrilled about the arrangement.
"Great," muttered Yilan, a sharp-tongued girl with an affinity for fire magic. "We're stuck with the academy's infamous duo. Try not to trip over yourselves."
Kai grinned. "Don't worry, Yilan. We'll make sure you get your moment to shine... as the comic relief."
The group trekked through dense forests and rocky trails, following the map provided by Master Ju. Along the way, Ryu's mind kept wandering. Fragments of a memory flitted through her consciousness—a book she'd read in the library about ancient relics. It had mentioned something about the elemental crystals being hidden not on the ground but above it.
"Hey, Kai," she whispered. "Do you remember that old library book about the elements?"
Kai raised an eyebrow. "You think I read books for fun?"
Ryu sighed, exasperated. "I'm serious. It said something about the crystals being placed high up, but not in plain sight."

The High Peak Caverns
By midday, the group reached the entrance to the High Peak Caverns. The massive stone archway loomed over them, and the air inside was cool and damp. Strange symbols adorned the walls, glowing faintly as they passed.
"This place is giving me the creeps," Yilan muttered, her usual bravado faltering.
As they delved deeper, the cavern opened up into a vast chamber. At its center floated the Crystal of Light, radiating a soft, golden glow. The group stared in awe, but as one of the students reached out to grab it, a shockwave of energy pushed them back.
"What just happened?" Kai exclaimed, helping the student to their feet.
"The crystal is protected," Ryu said quietly, her eyes narrowing. "It won't let just anyone take it."
She stepped closer, examining the symbols etched into the surrounding rocks. Memories of the book flooded back to her. "These symbols... they're a riddle. The crystal will only respond to the correct answer."
"And what's the question?" Yilan asked skeptically.
Ryu pointed to a line of glowing text on the wall. "'Only those who understand the balance of light and shadow may claim the power within.'"
The group fell silent, the weight of the challenge sinking in. Ryu took a deep breath. She knew they had to solve this puzzle together, but a nagging fear lingered in her mind. The memory of the book had come to her so suddenly—was it her own recollection, or was it something else entirely?

An Ominous Discovery
As the group debated the riddle, Ryu felt a strange warmth spreading through her chest. She glanced down and saw, to her horror, a faint black mark spreading across her wrist, the same hand she'd used during the earlier fight. Quickly, she pulled her sleeve down, hiding it from the others.
"Ryu, are you even paying attention?" Kai asked, snapping her out of her thoughts.
"Y-Yeah," she stammered. "Just... thinking."
Kai gave her a skeptical look but let it slide. Meanwhile, the group continued their attempts to decipher the riddle, unaware of the growing tension within Ryu. Whatever was happening to her, she knew it was connected to the Red P
earl—and the answers she sought might be closer than she realized.
