Chapter 136 - A Tentative Path

Headmaster Theron cleared his throat, his gaze shifting between Zephyr perched regally on Astrid's arm and the rest of the group. "The arrival of Lady Astrid's familiar serves as a potent reminder of the deep connections many of us share with the magical world. It also underscores the complexities we are navigating."

Xander nodded slowly, his eyes still on Zephyr. "Indeed, Headmaster. A strong familiar bond speaks to a mage's inherent control and understanding of magic. Astrid's connection to Zephyr is well-established." He glanced at Zane, then at Eclipse. "Perhaps a similar understanding can be reached with Master Zane and Eclipse, albeit their bond appears… more intense."

Lady Elara remained skeptical. "While I appreciate the sentiment, Xander, the events of this evening cannot be ignored. One of my guards is dead. Prince Lysander was attacked. This 'intense bond' resulted in lethal force."

Zephyr ruffled his feathers, letting out a sharp cry that echoed through the office, as if in disagreement with Lady Elara's assessment. Astrid gently calmed him with a soft stroke.

Headmaster Theron held up a hand. "Lady Elara, we are not dismissing the severity of what occurred. However, understanding the 'why' is crucial to preventing future incidents. Master Zane, can you shed any light on why Eclipse reacted with such force?"

Zane hesitated, his hand resting near Eclipse. "He is fiercely protective, Headmaster. He senses threats to those he is bonded to. Prince Lysander's forceful behavior towards Astrid, coupled with the attempt to restrain him, triggered that response."

Xander interjected, his tone thoughtful. "Perhaps a controlled observation of Eclipse's behavior, within a safe environment, could help us understand his triggers and limitations. And," he added, looking at Zane and Astrid, "a deeper exploration of your combined magic, under careful guidance, might reveal ways to harmonize your powers and prevent such volatile surges."

Headmaster Theron nodded slowly. "These are reasonable suggestions, Master Xander. Lady Elara, Prince Lysander, would you be amenable to such an approach? An attempt at understanding, rather than immediate punitive action?"
