The sun shone upon the valleys and over to Mrs Sydney's window. It was already time to wake up and the alarm rang so loud. She switched it off. Took it and checked the time. It was 6:00 am. She woke up and sat up straight in her bed. She took out her phone and went through her whatsapp. She looked through her chats. She scrolled over and as she scrolled she saw Cellphone numbers she didn't know. They were kind of unusual and strange to her. They had no name written to who they belonged to and hadn't been saved through her phone. She noticed that someone had sent her voice notes, probably about 10 voice notes. She entered the chat. She listened to the first one. She couldn't believe what she heard. The voice sounded like her husband's voice, tears won her over. She cried. Her hands shook with fear. She then opened her drawer and took earphones and listened again. This is what he said:
Hi, it's me, your husband, John, Elaine's father. I know I have not been in contact with you ever since I left. I've been silent but there's a specific reason for that. I was told so many times that you've been calling and sending messages. But the real truth is, this is what happened the day I left.
The voice note ends. She took a deep breath and wiped her tears. Her husband was not dead, what she had believed in was not true or it was rather assumptions. She then listened to the second one. He continued:
I immediately sat down on the train as soon as you left. I watched all of you leave until you disappeared. I then sat up straight and thoughts ran over my mind about this far away job. I could n't stop thinking about it. But in the train there were four guys, two sitting in front of me, one standing next to a pole also next to me. In Fact there were five of them because the other one sat in the backseat. The three next to me kept on looking at me. I didn't mind that because I had gotten used to it. People love starring. I then continued with my thoughts but I got disturbed. My phone rang. I checked the numbers. I didn't know them so I didn't answer . It rang again, but I still didn't answer. It rang many times. I got irritated and answered. Actually, it was a secretary from the company I had been called by. She wanted to check if I was already on the train that was coming. But there was something strange with the call.
The voice note ends. She listens to the third one. He continued :
The woman was kind of jumpy. She sounded scared and it was like she was being told what to say. She kept stopping and I would call her and then she would answer "I'm still here " and would continue. She was breathing too fast and with fear. The call was just cut off before we finished talking. Of course I was surprised who wouldn't be but in my mind I thought perhaps she was too busy with work and on the other hand busy talking on the phone or had rather made a mistake and she was still new on the job and was being trained. I then got over that and placed my phone back into my pocket. I lifted my head and found those three guys staring at me so intently. I looked at them and they all looked in different directions as if they were mad. I nodded my head and also looked away. The other guy who stood next to me spoke, " Was that about a job?", he asked. I turned to the other side where he was standing and answered "Yeah, it was' ', I answered looking at him. He again spoke "Man, You lucky you found one. It's hard to find jobs around here, especially for those of us who are poor. You know the rich get rich and the poor remain poor so you lucky man", he said. I thanked him and also asked "Are you also looking for a job or you going to one?", I asked, looking at him. The other two laughed, and I looked at them. He also looked at them but his look was different. It was a suspicious look but I then interrupted "So where are you heading man?", I asked again. He doesn't give me a straight answer but beats around the bush, he says "Man, I'm going somewhere not to work. I'm not working, obviously, who would hire a man like me. I'm just going to check on my sister. She leaves around but not now. I'm going to see a friend first", he said. I kept quiet for a second and looked at him. He was dressed nicely for someone who was not working, he was muscular and taller than me, he looked rich. I then replied "okay then, man it was nice meeting you", I said still looking at him. He then lifted his hand and I raised mine too. We shake but he doesn't let go and looks at them. But I pulled them off. We then went quiet and continued with our business. I saw him taking out his phone from his pockets after we spoke and texting someone but I thought he was texting his sister or that friend of his. I then stopped looking at him. Through that silence the train driver spoke "The man who's going to Mexico, I'm no longer driving to the other station, I'm stopping here", he said. Everyone looked around, I stood up. I still could n't understand.
Again it ends she presses the next one. He still continues:
Everyone looked around, I stood up. Everyone looked at me, especially those men. I just couldn't understand how he knew that I was going to Mexico as I looked around and the three guys were still looking at me and the driver was looking at me in the mirror. He somehow blinks his eyes. I saw for myself that something was wrong. I quickly got out of the train. I turned around and looked back at the train. There were also others walking out but as I looked inside I no longer saw those three men that were in the train. I looked around. I saw them walking out and there were others, the ones I saw from the back seat when I entered. They were plotting something. I looked at them, they were wearing the same suits, same everything. It was obvious they were sent and the driver too but luckily he warned me. I looked around. I did n't know this place. I was in a train station. I saw others walking to the left I followed. (This one ends too, she listens to the next one) I walk fast whereas I keep looking back. I see them following me. I then started running, they ran too. I ran through the stairs and turned around in a corner. I kept on running until I got to an open street. I looked around and just across it was another street. It was busy. There were a lot of people. They would see me as I crossed the road and cars kept beeping at me, others almost ran over me, yeah, I really caused traffic. I got to the other street and looked back. I saw them. They were still following me. I bumped into a lot of people, and turned a lot of corners, entered through people's gates and peoples houses and others insulted me. I got tired of running and saw a hiding place. It was a little shelter. It looked abandoned. I then looked around. I didn't see them. I went through the inside of it. I called out, no one answered, I even took out my phone and turned on the touch. I looked around but there was no one. It was abandoned. I then sat down and cooled down. As I was sitting I noticed something in my jacket, in my arm, I touched it, it was a device. I then took it out and brought it to the light. And damn, it was a tracking device, that fool placed it on me when we were shaking hands. I destroyed it with my shoes and had to start running again. But it was a dead end. The only way I could run away from here was to run back. I was about too, when the five guys came out from their hiding places. We fought and I won, yeah I won. I then ran back to that street . I got to a corner and I had to turn. And the moment I turned around it, I couldn't see and felt electrocuted and a needle got to my neck. I fell and they took me inside a car and it drove away. The five guys woke up and followed behind us. The car finally stopped along the way in an old garage. I was awakened by cold water. I woke up breathing too fast and suffocating. My hands and legs were tied in a chair and I tried untiring myself but I just couldn't. I then heard voices laughing and I looked up. It was those guys I fought. They were standing around me, two were treating their wounds and others sitting in chairs and old grates playing dice. I looked around, the place was so dark and shady. There were chemicals, big machines, drug loads and some tracks packed inside. I then turned and looked from the glass door that was beside me. I saw a lot of people working and making chemicals. I thought it was drugs. I faced away and looked on my far right and saw dead bodies. I was startled. They were all hanging from the air in a wire. I then took a good look and noticed a person's body being shredded into pieces by some machine and as I looked around. I also saw another machine extracting that person's blood into chemical tubes. It was all terrifying and disgusting, I then turned away and started screaming. My mouth was actually closed by a sellotape so I was unheard. I then started moving my chair and made a lot of noise. I thought they were going to kill me. The chair made a lot of noise together with my humming which frustrated the guards. "What is it now?"one guard asked, removing the sellotape so violently. I screamed so loud and finally spoke "Man couldn't you go easy, what this place? untie me. I want to leave immediately", I said, shaking the chair so violently. One guard placed a gun on top of my forehead and said "keep quiet and you are not going anywhere until the boss gets here", he said removing it and placing it again on my forehead. I became furious and stomped on his foot. He screamed and the other guys playing dice stood up. They all surrounded me and that one I spoke to in the train gave me a slap with a gun . They stopped him as he tried to hit me again. A thin guard said " Man, you heard the boss, he said he wanted him alive, not dead, so stop it and wait for the boss". Two bodyguards lifted the chair and removed the guard feets. He looks at me angrily. I spoke again "I said untie me, didn't you hear what I said and what boss are you talking about? What do you want from me? I do have a job I have to get to" , I said so angrily and moved the chair again. They all laughed at me, and another one who was muscular spoke, "There was no job in the first place. The boss just wanted you to get here, no hard feelings man", he said chopping an apple and chewing it so disgustingly. I just couldn't believe them. I thought about you, my father, Elaine and thought it was impossible, I then asked again. "So what about the woman who called me for a job and that call I received huh? you all are just fooling around, if you want money I don't have it". They laughed again and that frustrated me the most. They called a woman named Jenny. She was tall and slender, she walked closer and stood in front of me. They told me Jenny was the one who pretended to be a secretary and spoke on the phone. She was actually the boss PA and that call I received was fake. One guard, also tall ,and fat imitated the call and they all laughed. I realized from then there was no job really in the first place, the woman, the driver, I just lost all hope. I said, "So what does your boss want with me? I think you should untie me. I have to get back home. I've got no time to waste here , your boss running late", I said angrily. One again answered "You ain't going anywhere sir so relax, the boss is coming", he said and they walked away to continue playing dice. I watched them walk away and as they sat down. I looked around me. Actually there was a table with tools, scissors, pins and next to me a pin. It was so close I just had to move the chair to get it. I then looked at them. They were so focused on playing the dice, laughing and chatting, making a lot of noise. I then slowly moved the chair to the table. I tried reaching out to the pin until I touched it but I removed my hands, I accidentally hit a hammer and it fell. It made a loud noise on the tiles and the guards heard it fall. One came to look and saw that I had tried to untie myself. He took a needle and injected me with it, and I fell into a deep sleep. The voice note ended, she played the next one. He continued:
It had been a few hours of sleeping and being unconscious when I finally woke up again. I slowly opened my eyes. My head was spinning and heavy. It was like I was having a headache of some sort. I looked around, I was in a different room. It looked like a cell. It was also dark and shady with one small window. I was sleeping on the floor with no blanket and I think the coldness was what woke me. Next to me was food placed just below my feets. I was really hungry so I moved my hands and to my surprise I wasn't tied. I sat up straight and moved to touch myself and my legs just moved. I was free, I cared no more for food. I immediately got up and made my way to the door. I tried opening it. It was locked, there was no way I could open it with no key. I slowly sat down when I heard voices speaking. I peeked on the door, there were some holes on it. There were gentlemen standing besides the door. I just couldn't hear what they were saying. I looked at them , the other was one of the guards that spoke to me in the train and next to him stood tall, somehow thin, he was dressed perfectly in a black tuxedo. His hair nicely combed, he was carrying car keys with a briefcase. I tried looking at his face but I just couldn't see him . He faced backward from the door. They stood there for about an hour and I saw the man in the suit leaving. I looked at him closely as he passed, he seemed to be the boss but his walk was quite familiar. It was similar to someone's walk I knew from the past. I watched him until I couldn't see him any more and that guard was left behind and he made a call. He was shouting on the phone looking so angry in his face. His hands were shaking and he was sweating. He was still on the phone and a lady doctor came to him. He shouted at her and ended the call. He shouted so loud at her. She left and after her followed a lot of people being guarded by some bodyguards escorting them. They were all young girls and boys, still in their youth. They all looked so scared and vulnerable. They passed him and he pointed somewhere, like a room or something. I then heard a door opening and the kids crying and screaming. It was like they were being forced to something they didn't want to do. Others kept stepping back trying to run away, others touching the wall to ram on it but they were all dragged inside. The guy took out keys and threw them to the other guard and called again. They locked them inside. Spoke man finished his call. He called the other bodyguard with the doctor, he whispered something to them. The doctor and the nurse left together whereas Mr spoke man followed them behind. It all went silent. The hall became quiet with no one walking or coming in and out. I then slowly went down and sat next to the door folding my feets. My stomach started gurgling. I realized I was still hungry. I stood up and took the food I ate. It was really cold but what could I have done? I just ate. It was not that bad though. I had just finished eating, ready to lay down and think of how I was going to escape here. I heard feets walking through the hall and someone shouting at them. I ran to the door. I saw a lot doctor's walking past my room. They were carrying needles and injections, medicines and scissors. They were followed by the guards carrying guns. They were rushing too fast. Mr spoke man followed behind with the boss. I heard the door open again. I felt so much noise in my ears, the kids screaming and shouting so loud, others came running to the hall, crying in fear but they were taken back to the room. I felt pain in me but I just didn't know what to do. There was nowhere I could get out but I just knew there was something wrong and bad going on here. But I just couldn't do a thing. I went to the window to check what it led to and tried to plan my escape. I peeked in, there was just another room next to mine. I couldn't see what was inside, it seemed to be empty. I tried opening the window and because of that and the noise I couldn't hear the door opening. Three guards stood behind me and one called out "he's trying to run away boss' ', he said looking at me. The boss told them to bring me to him. I wouldn't let them, perhaps it was a way for me to escape from here. They came towards me and I started to fight them. I first made them lose their guns. It was then easier to fight them but that attracted more of them. I fought back though and defeated them. I came out of the room and there was no one in the hall. I looked through my right, the door next to my room was opened and the guards were lying dead on the ground. I slowly walked in and just as I was walking inside a hand touched me. I turned back and it was a young girl. She was crying and scared. I could just see the pain in her eyes. She tried speaking but her mouth was closed. One other boy who laid next to her bed pointed me to a closet. They were pens and papers. I took them out and went back to him. He takes them and writes something. His hands were bleeding , he was hurt. He finished writing. And small lettered words were visible in the paper as they read "Help us' '. I couldn't agree more so I just decided to help them. I looked around and I saw a lot of them. The kid pointed me to a safe. He wrote the code and I went to open it. I already had the keys when I heard a voice speaking to me "who are you and what are you doing here?", she asked, looking me straight in the eye. Damn it was that doctor I saw from the hall. She must have walked out earlier. I'm definitely screwed. She continued looking at me, she saw something. She asked again "I've asked you a question, what are you doing here and why are you standing there?", she asked and I moved back. She noticed I had opened the safe and she screamed so loud. I think they must have heard her so I had to act fast. I quickly took an injection next to me. I didn't know what it was for, I just took it. She was busy screaming looking out the door. I ran to her and injected her with it. She slowly fell down but she wasn't the only problem. The other doctors were already behind me. They too injected me with a needle, I also fell down. I had hoped I could save the kids but I was wrong plus I had no plan so I failed. The key was placed back to the safe. The bodyguards came and dragged me out. I woke up in a cold room. I was shivering, my skin and clothes like ice. I looked around the was meat around, and dead bodies hanging around me. The door opened, two bodyguards entered and spoke to the man in front. They untied me and took me out. They took me to another room. It was an office with red couches. It was fancy though. They threw me next to a fire. I almost burnt my jacket. I stood up and warmed myself. I was really cold, I couldn't even feel my toes. Spoke man whispered to my ear "If it was me I would have left you in that cold room", he said moving away. I looked at him as he ran over my shoulders. Two men walked in by the door with other bodyguards. One was that man who was standing with a spoke man in the hall and the other one I didn't know. They came in close and as they came closer I noticed that man who stood in the hall. I looked at his walk and then his face. Damn it was the wizard. He walks closer. I was already pissed. But then I controlled my anger. He walked past me and sat on his chair whereas the other one followed back. Jenny came and gave him a glass of whiskey. He drank it within a second and placed his shoe on top of the table. He then said "John, what a great pleasure to meet you again". He's still stupid with his balmy face and I just didn't answer. He continued "Okay fine pass, it seems like your tongue has been cut out (I looked at him angrily, moved my feet but I was stopped) No I'm not fighting you but we can, since you caused a little chaos lately but no problem. The reason I called you here (he laughs) silly me, where are my manners come sits here (he points me to a chair) how can we speak business whereas you standing. I bet you are even warm now", he said looking at me as if I'd approve. My heart was burning with anger and I didn't walk to sit in that chair. I stood there my hands finched, thinking of a plan to beat his ass. "Okay that's fine you'd rather stand so I will just get to the point. The real reason I called you here (I interrupted) "You didn't you fool", I said moving towards him but I was stopped again "okay whatever I did, I want you to join me in this business. I want you and I to be business partners. You see your skills and power with mine can make the world a better place". "I'd never work with you even if you were the last person on earth so no", he looked at me and slowly stood up from his chair and sat at his desk. "okay so even if it means putting your family in danger, especially your child. She carries a very special thing of mine", I shouted angrily. " Don't you dare touch my daughter or else ....) "Or else what (he moves to me and speaks to my face) you'd kill me, I've heard that many times try another speech. I quickly realized my hand and punched him in the face. "Now you've gone too far man", he said laughing but I'm a man with mercy. "Take him to his room boys and just think you wouldn't want your girl dead right for your actions, selfish actions imagine '', he said that and left. And the boys dragged me back to my room. They threw me into the room and locked the door. I was expected to think about what, I wouldn't dare do business with him but what about my daughter, I couldn't just lose her, I had to fight back. Either I stopped his plan whatever it was with those girls and boys or what was happening here in the garage or rather killed him and what was this thing my daughter carried that was so important to him, so special. I thought to myself. I was still in my thoughts when I saw a shadow standing in my door. I stood up and went to stand behind the door. It opened and the person entered, walking slowly, busy looking for me saying "psst". I jumped on him and strangled him with my elbow. I then threw him down. But as he fell I recognized his face. He was the man who warned me on the train. I quickly helped him up and sat him straight. He wasn't that hurt, I didn't strangle him so hard nor did he hit his head so hard on the floor. I thought looking at him brushing his head. He looked at me and opened his eyes. I apologized as many times as I could but he didn't mind me. He told me to close the door, to lock it up and to turn off the lights. I was obviously confused but I did what he told me. I then turned back to sit with him. He was carrying a big map with him and a torch lighting it onto the paper. He told me to sit down with him. On the paper there were several countries circled in pink and blue and there were numbers written on them. Different in each country. He then spoke :
After the wizard and his wife with their friend lost their powers. They came with a new plan. They couldn't cope with this new life without powers. They wanted them back, they felt weak and wanted revenge. So they came to me and asked me to help them. I agreed and I was kind of interested. I wanted power too, to be recognised. My brother had just passed away and I was left alone and I was here looking for my niece but I thought this would be a great distraction to my problems so I joined them and forgotten about them. But that not only what they promised me. They promised me I would run all the operations, own 50% and be included in all the decisions to be made and after I would go to find my niece. We started with good intentions. It was only a few humans. We would take 10 humans per country mixing races, adults only between ages 35 upwards. That was the plan. It was for them to gain their powers again so they could rebuild their own empire and to go and find their powers from the Phoenixes and wake Dragon Slair. They wanted revenge and that was all and I helped them at that time, they told me you were the bad ones. That why I agreed to work with them. They even promised me the world, I agreed plus I was the greatest doctor at the time and still. So we started the process. It was promising at first. We would kill those humans, take their body parts and make ointments and their blood too would be placed in big tubes. We soon made a lot of ointments and the tube was soon filled. We tested it and to our surprise it didn't work. It turned out those humans were too old and their blood was no longer productive. They told or in fact suggested we should reduce the age of the humans to be between 18 to 20, that was it. It was only for a short period of time until Dragon Slair woke up and his army aroused and yes it happened. It became successful, dragon Slair awaken, their army aroused. Those kids' blood was too powerful because we didn't take not only ordinary kids but supernatural kids whose powers were still maturing and it did help. But to the wizard and his wife, I mean to the queen witch and the wizard with their friend it wasn't enough, they became mean, bitter and greedy. They now wanted to conquer the world with their powers. They felt they needed more of those poor little humans, it gave them money, wealth, more power and weapons. It went on until now but now it has gone too far. I need to stop this plus I found out my niece was alive and what really happened on that day and I've had enough of them. I need to stop them from these operations of theirs of destroying the world and today you proved it to me, you are against this but I tried warning you at the train but you just didn't listen, they caught you. "So why betray them because they are your partners, what the real reason is, because there's more to it. I know, why stop now, don't you think you're late?", I asked angrily. He answered, "It's never too late for a change. But the real reason I want to stop this is I discovered the truth. One day they were gone, it was just after the second war, five days after they had found out dragon Slair was killed. So they left to his place to find out what happened. I was left alone with no one. I went to their office. I found papers drawn with a plan similar to this one (I interrupted him) "So what I'm I supposed to do in this operation of yours, what does he want from me I mean the wizard why drive a bus whereas you are a doctor?", I asked and he answered. "I was ordered to drive that bus with those bodyguards and to ditch you there but he does have big dangerous plans, him and her wife to destroy the world with these operations they are running here. They have all they need except for what your daughter holds, it's a complete piece of what they would need to get their powers from Phoenixes and you play another part in that too. They want all these kingdoms destroyed to bring back and restore their world and you to help kill my niece and I won't let that happen and neither will you let them kill your daughter nor will you help them destroy the world. you better than that right, your purpose is to save the world ", he replied looking me in the eye. I quenched my thirst and took a deep breath and spoken "I wouldn't let anyone near my daughter nor harm her, and yes my purpose is to keep the world and its people safe so I won't help them I rather stop and destroy his plans but where are the others, I mean his wife and Lucida?". He answered and what he told was not what I expected to hear but we could use it to our advantage. It ends. She listens to the next one, her heart beating so fast. Elaine knocked on the door but she couldn't hear her. Elaine just left for school. He continues:
This is what he told me "A lot has happened lately. you know after the war between the Sorcerers and the witches. The three grew further apart and when I learned the truth. You know Dragon Slair died again so they left the wizard and his wife, Lucida was already no longer with them. I heard she was away for some time. That's what they told me so the two couples left to confirm his death whereas Lucida is nowhere to be found even if they contacted her. She turns them away. But let's start with mine. I was alone that day or three to run the whole place up until they came back and I had to finish making up those pourshins, at least that's what we agreed on. That after this group of kids we would stop the operations. We've had enough. I would leave to find my niece after that. I was sitting in the lab that day when they had left. And it's been a few hours since they had and I decided to take a break. I noticed their office door open. I remembered ILiara reminding the wizard to lock it but he seemed to have forgotten still. They were angry so I wouldn't blame him. I stood up and went to the office. I entered and I started searching. I found papers in a drawer. They had a similar plan like this one. They weren't going to stop the operations nor the business. They were moving the operation away from there to here. Their reason was there were no more kids in the west so they had to move here in the east. My head was buzzing, I felt betrayed and alienated and how stupid I was to be fooled. I was sidelined and I just couldn't see it and what pained me the most was that the arrangements were already made. I continued searching for more secrets and that's when I found a similar picture to this one I held. It was a picture of my brother together with my niece. You see my brother was searching for her too before I found out he died. I couldn't believe it, what was his picture doing with them but my brother once mentioned evil people trying to kill her daughter, her being in danger and she was alone especially since her mother had died at the hands of these evil people. And what confused me was how they ended up with this picture, did they kill him or were they one of this people my brother spoke about and I thought they didn't know my brother. I sat down there in the office thinking and that when Lucida entered. She was with Mark. She first went to her room, took her staff and came to the office. To her surprise she found me sitting in there but to my surprise she didn't kick me out. She asked me where they were, I answered " they were gone to see Dragon Slair and to confirm his death", I answered. She was shaking l, her clothes were torn with blood and I was still surprised she was with Mark. She looked inside the drawers too and saw me holding the picture and asked why are you holding that picture. I didn't answer I was looking at her. I somehow noticed that she had scars in her body. it seemed like she was fighting. I was scared to ask her, you know she was evil at that time. She was bitter and would kill me in any second but I asked in fear "where have you been?", she looked at me angrily. I turned away. She took some book. I think it was the book of life with a wand. She seem to be escaping. The phone rang. It were them. They told me they weren't coming back. They couldn't find dragon Slair's body or his killers but they suspect the sorcerers. I was still in the office still thinking when I heard two people talking and walking straight to the office. I couldn't see who they were so I just hidden under the table and held my breath. To my surprise it was Lucida. She entered and walked straight to the table. She started searching, opening up drawers but she went quiet for some time. I think she was looking at that paper, damn I left it on the table with the picture. Her clothes were torn with blood, her skin with scars and she was bleeding and her wounds were still new. Not so long after the second person entered. I couldn't believe what I saw. It was Mark, son of Dawg the sorcerer. I thought they were enemies but as I looked the other five followed entering by the door. Lucida had no problem with them. They weren't fighting. They spoke like they were friends. She showed them the map and told them their plan. She told them they should not move where they were moving and she even confirmed she killed Dragon Slair and what really happened and it was not what she planned to do. She then walked out. Mark and the other sorcerer were left behind, two were looking at the paper, Mark and the others were looking around as they waited for her. She came back carrying a brown bag. She placed it in a chair. It had the book of life, her wand and she went to a safe and took out stones. She then told them to leave but she saw someone holding a picture, she went to him "Or that Mathilde and his father. She was still young. Bad luck father, he got killed by ILiara looking for her. He didn't agree to her terms and conditions so he got killed. I didn't think so, I mean I was bad but not anymore". She said she had enough of them and they lied to her all these years. They then walked out and left. I came out of the table and went in front and saw them leave. I slowly went back and started crying. Man I was angry they killed my brother. I started ruining everything. I even freed the kids. They ran away and I too planned to escape , I took the picture and the map placed them in my bag and I was about to run away when the man with the wizard entered. He injected me with a needle. I fell onto a deep sleep. And from then I was imprisoned for tryna escape and for fighting, destroying and letting those kids go. I now take orders from them and do operations with the other doctors.
