Brandan looked at his mother's pale, sorrowful face; he lowered his eyes and sat beside Lady Hyde.
The night was very quiet, Brandan's voice faintly echoed in the hall.
"I really love her," he said softly, "I know it's too late to say this. But letting her go is worse than letting me die."
Lady Hyde was startled, looked up at Brandan in disbelief. There seemed to be flames burning in Brandan's eyes, yet those flames were black, flickering in his pupils, making one's heart palpitate.
"Brandan, what are you talking about?" Lady Hyde forced a smile, "Something about death... In this world, no one will die without someone else..."
Lady Hyde's smile was stiff as she looked at her son's face; his expression was very calm, revealing no emotions.
"I'm going upstairs."
Brandan said nothing more. He stood up, nodded slightly to her, and then turned and left.
