She cried like a lost child, with big tears rolling down her cheeks, wetting her temples.
The warmth from his body suddenly diminished, leaving him somewhat bewildered.
He let go of her, then reached out to pull her into his arms. Her tears soaked his collar, and his heart felt a slight, damp pain.
"Iris, please stop crying."
He raised his hand and gently stroked her hair, softly consoling her.
"Let me go, Brandan Hyde, I'm begging you, let me go."
"Anything but that—I can promise you anything else."
"But it's the only thing I want."
Brandan Hyde tightened his hold on her slightly and whispered, "I'm sorry."
This was the only thing he couldn't agree to.
Iris Harris cried for a while, and exhausted, she fell into a sleepy haze.
Brandan Hyde lowered his head, looking at her moist eyelashes and reddened eyes from crying. A fine, continuous ache welled up within him, causing a hint of moisture to appear in his eyes.
