There was a moment of obvious astonishment in Asher Land's eyes, and Sophie Smith realized that what she just said might have been a bit cheesy. She lowered her head, her eyes turning red.
"Come here," he said gently.
Sophie didn't know what he wanted to do, but she dutifully walked over.
He lay on the hospital bed and made a gesture with his hand, indicating for her to come closer.
Sophie complied, bending down until she was just inches away from him.
His lips moved close to her ear, secretive and mysterious.
"What are you doing?" she asked. Just as she was about to pull away, he grasped her hand.
"Don't move around, or the wound might reopen!"
She still remembered the last time he took over ten lashes from Nathan Land, suffering painfully every night. Now, he had been stabbed in the shoulder, and she knew he would have to endure the pain again.
"Do you know? Hearing you say that makes me very happy. Sophie, meeting you is my greatest luck."
