The dungeon was throwing desperate enemies at them who weren't always in perfect condition to fight. They were very likely trying to get away from the thing the Crimson Handmaiden had labeled as 'The Heart.'
Though that did not mean their encounters were easy, not at all. Cornered beasts were the most dangerous and unpredictable, after all. What made their progress so quick was the rate of hostile encounters that were expedited by the monsters' desire to leave the inner parts of the dungeon.
