Chapter 1 - Chapter 0: Introduction — The Mortal Ladder: The Law of the Ten Levels

Every major cultivation stage in the Mortal Realm is divided into Ten Levels of Mastery.

These levels represent the gradual refinement of a cultivator's understanding and control over their current stage. Advancement is not simply a matter of accumulating more Qi. As a cultivator progresses through the ten levels, they gradually stabilize, refine, and perfect the transformation associated with that particular stage.

The ten levels are divided into four broad bands:

Levels 1–3 — Initiation: The cultivator begins to understand the fundamental principles of the stage and establishes the basic foundation required for further advancement.

Levels 4–6 — Moderate: The transformation begins to stabilize, allowing the cultivator to exercise greater control over their power and abilities.

Levels 7–9 — High: The cultivator approaches the limits of the current stage, developing deeper mastery and more advanced capabilities.

Level 10 — Perfection: The absolute pinnacle of the stage. The cultivator's foundation is completely refined, hidden flaws are removed, and the stage reaches its highest possible state before advancement.

Level 10 is particularly important because advancing after reaching Perfection is fundamentally different from breaking through prematurely. A cultivator who reaches Level 10 establishes a stronger and more stable foundation for the transformation that follows.

Thus, the progression is:

Level 1–3 → Initiation

Level 4–6 → Moderate

Level 7–9 → High

Level 10 → Perfection

The Ten Stages of Mortal Cultivation

1. Body Tempering

Core Principle: Tempering and strengthening the physical body

The Body Tempering stage establishes the physical foundation of cultivation.

The body is the foundation and vessel through which the spirit and soul experience life and death. Before a cultivator can properly manipulate spiritual energy, their physical body must first be strengthened enough to withstand it.

During Body Tempering, cultivators absorb Qi and other forms of environmental energy and use it to refine their physical constitution. Their skin, muscles, blood, organs, and bones are strengthened while impurities are gradually removed from the body.

At the lower levels, a cultivator's physical body already becomes considerably tougher than that of an ordinary human. Their skin can become as tough as iron, while their muscles and bones gain extraordinary strength and resilience.

By Level 10, the body has undergone an extremely thorough refinement. It becomes a highly refined and resilient vessel, comparable to jade in its purity and durability. It can withstand enormous physical and spiritual pressure and provides an exceptionally strong foundation for the stages that follow.

2. Qi Refining

Core Principle: Refining and internalizing Qi

After establishing a sufficiently strong physical body, the cultivator begins learning how to consciously control the spiritual energy of the world.

During Qi Refining, the cultivator draws raw Qi from their surroundings into their meridians. This Qi is then circulated and refined into usable internal spiritual energy.

As the cultivator progresses, their meridians become capable of carrying greater quantities of Qi. This refined energy can then be used to enhance the physical body, empower weapons, and execute basic techniques.

At higher levels, cultivators gain the ability to project Qi beyond their bodies. They can release concentrated blasts of energy and perform increasingly sophisticated techniques.

This stage represents the transition from relying primarily on physical strength to consciously wielding spiritual energy.

3. Qi Condensation

Core Principle: Condensing Qi and giving it form

Qi Condensation represents the next step in the refinement of spiritual energy.

Rather than merely circulating and refining Qi, the cultivator begins learning how to control its structure and form.

The spiritual energy accumulated during the previous stage is compressed and condensed, making it denser and more powerful. The cultivator can also shape this condensed Qi according to their intent.

With sufficient mastery, Qi can be formed into weapons, shields, barriers, constructs, and other manifestations. Depending on the cultivator's understanding and affinity, it may also be shaped into elemental manifestations.

At this stage, Qi begins to behave like a tangible form of energy that can be deliberately manipulated into different shapes and applications.

By Level 10, the cultivator possesses complete mastery over the condensation and manipulation of Qi available at the mortal level.

4. Golden Core

Core Principle: Creating a centralized energy core

The Golden Core stage marks a major transformation in the cultivator's internal energy system.

The condensed Qi accumulated during the previous stage is compressed even further within the Dantian, eventually forming a highly concentrated Golden Core.

The Golden Core functions as a centralized reservoir and storage center for spiritual energy. It provides the cultivator with a powerful internal foundation, greatly increasing their energy reserves, stability, and endurance.

The formation of the Golden Core is not simply a matter of possessing more Qi. It represents the creation of an entirely new internal energy structure.

As their mastery increases, cultivators gain abilities such as sustained flight, telekinetic manipulation, enhanced spiritual perception, and greater control over their techniques.

The Golden Core therefore represents a major advancement in both the quantity and organization of a cultivator's spiritual energy.

5. Cave Heaven

Core Principle: Awakening an internal medium for storing vast amounts of Qi

The Cave Heaven stage expands the cultivator's internal capacity beyond the limitations of the ordinary physical body.

At this stage, the cultivator awakens an internal spatial medium known as the Cave Heaven. This internal space is capable of holding enormous quantities of spiritual energy and resources.

The cultivator's capacity is no longer limited solely by the physical dimensions of their body. Instead, their internal space provides a vastly greater reservoir for storing Qi.

This allows cultivators to maintain prolonged battles, continuously perform powerful techniques, and manipulate their surrounding environment on a much larger scale.

Cave Heaven therefore serves as a bridge between ordinary internal cultivation and deeper forms of spatial existence.

6. Spirit Awakening

Core Principle: Manifesting spiritual will as a powerful external form

The Spirit Awakening stage marks the awakening and externalization of the cultivator's spiritual power and will.

At this stage, a cultivator can project their spiritual intent outward and manifest it as a massive spiritual avatar surrounding or standing behind them.

This manifestation operates on a principle similar to a powerful spiritual guardian or Susanoo-like form. However, it is not an independent creature or separate being. It is fundamentally an external representation of the cultivator's own spiritual power, will, and presence.

The manifestation can greatly amplify the cultivator's offensive and defensive capabilities. It may take the form of armor, a guardian, or a massive combat manifestation capable of extending the cultivator's power far beyond the limits of their ordinary physical body.

Through Spirit Awakening, the cultivator's inner spiritual power gains a tremendous external presence.

7. Nascent Soul

Core Principle: Giving birth to a spiritual self beyond the physical body

The Nascent Soul stage represents a profound transformation in the relationship between the cultivator's physical body and their spiritual existence.

The Golden Core undergoes a profound transformation, eventually breaking apart as the foundation gives birth to a Nascent Soul.

The Nascent Soul is a miniature spiritual representation of the cultivator. It possesses their consciousness, spiritual identity, and accumulated understanding.

This transformation means that the cultivator is no longer completely dependent upon their physical body for continued existence.

If the physical body is destroyed, the Nascent Soul can potentially survive, flee, or seek another vessel.

The Nascent Soul therefore represents a major step toward spiritual independence and establishes a form of existence that is less dependent on the physical body.

8. Nihility

Core Principle: Rebuilding the mortal foundation from nothing

The Nihility stage is not simply another stage of accumulation. It is a stage of destruction and reconstruction.

The cultivator dismantles the structures, insights, energy systems, and foundations they developed throughout their previous stages. Everything is reduced to its essential state and then reconstructed.

However, this does not mean that the cultivator discards their knowledge or experience.

Instead, everything learned throughout the previous stages is retained and used as the basis for rebuilding. Every flaw, weakness, and imperfection within the earlier foundation can be identified and corrected.

The cultivator essentially reconstructs their entire mortal foundation according to everything they have learned.

The result is the Perfect Mortal Foundation—a mortal body, spiritual structure, and cultivation system refined through the accumulated experience and insights of every previous stage.

Nihility therefore represents the ultimate refinement of mortality before the cultivator begins the final transition toward immortality.

9. Accession

Core Principle: Existing between mortality and immortality

Accession is the final transitional stage of mortal cultivation.

By this point, the cultivator has pushed beyond the ordinary limitations of mortal cultivation, but they are not yet truly immortal.

They exist in an intermediate state between mortality and immortality.

Their body, spirit, soul, and energy begin interacting with higher laws. They can gradually perceive and comprehend principles that lie beyond the limits of their previous mortal understanding.

At this stage, the cultivator begins facing Heavenly Tribulations associated with the transition into immortality.

These tribulations test the cultivator's foundation and determine whether it is capable of withstanding the transformation required to enter immortal existence.

Accession therefore represents the threshold between two worlds: the end of the mortal path and the beginning of true immortality.

10. Immortal

Core Principle: Transcending mortal limitations and achieving true immortality

The Immortal stage represents the completion of the Mortal Realm cultivation path.

After surviving the final Heavenly Tribulation, the cultivator undergoes the final transformation of their mortal foundation.

Their mortal body becomes an Immortal Body, while their mortal Qi transforms into a higher form of energy capable of sustaining immortal existence.

An immortal no longer possesses an ordinary mortal lifespan. They are free from natural aging and the limitations associated with mortal life.

However, immortality does not mean absolute invulnerability.

An immortal can still be slain by sufficient force or by another being capable of overcoming their existence. Their immortality means freedom from natural death and ordinary mortal limitations, not absolute immunity to destruction.

With this transformation, the cultivator completes the Mortal Realm path and becomes qualified to enter the Immortal Realm, where entirely new stages of cultivation await.

Complete Progression of the Mortal Realm

The ten stages represent a continuous process of transformation:

Body Tempering → Tempers and strengthens the physical body.

Qi Refining → Refines and internalizes spiritual energy.

Qi Condensation → Condenses Qi and gives it tangible form.

Golden Core → Creates a centralized internal energy core.

Cave Heaven → Awakens an internal medium capable of storing vast amounts of Qi.

Spirit Awakening → Externalizes spiritual will into a powerful spiritual manifestation.

Nascent Soul → Gives birth to an independent spiritual self.

Nihility → Rebuilds the mortal foundation using accumulated experience and insight.

Accession → Transcends ordinary mortal cultivation and establishes an intermediate state between mortality and immortality.

Immortal → Achieves true immortality and qualifies for entry into the Immortal Realm.

The overall transformation can therefore be summarized as follows:

The body is tempered.

Qi is refined.

Energy is condensed.

An internal core is formed.

Spatial capacity is awakened.

Spiritual will is externalized.

The spiritual self becomes less dependent on the physical body.

The mortal foundation is destroyed and rebuilt.

Mortality is transcended.

Immortality is achieved.

The Immortal stage is the culmination of the Mortal Realm cultivation path, but it is not the end of cultivation itself.

The cultivator has merely completed the foundation of mortality and crossed the threshold into a higher world.

Beyond this point lies the Immortal Realm, where entirely new stages of cultivation, greater laws, deeper transformations, and higher forms of existence await.
