[Night]
"Captain Rosse, you certainly have quite the refined mood tonight."
Walking with slow, soft steps, Unohana Retsu landed on the rooftop and came to stand beside Rosse.
Rosse was lazily lying on the roof, lazily watching the Seireitei night.
"These next few days will trouble Captain Unohana. I even had to trouble you to stay over here with us," Rosse spoke in a laid-back tone. In his perception, a certain Fifth Division captain had already gone out into the darkness to work.
Honestly, Aizen was absolutely the most intelligent action-oriented person he had ever met.
Someone like that... he really wanted to recruit as a subordinate someday.
He didn't need to say anything. The man would perfectly clean up every loose end on his own.
That sort of feeling was simply too comfortable.
"Think nothing of it. It's just a change of place, and a change of mood. Captain Rosse, although... there is a small request I must shamelessly make," Unohana wore a gentle smile, yet somehow it felt chilling.
As if she was suppressing a demon inside her heart that was nearly breaking free.
"Oh? Please go ahead, Captain Unohana."
Rosse pretended to be surprised, though he already knew what it would be.
Unohana Retsu, originally named Unohana Yachiru, was the greatest villain the Soul Society had ever produced in a thousand years.
This woman who appeared so impossibly gentle had personally killed as many people as he had.
She was one of the very few evildoers whose number of killings could rival Rosse's.
People like them naturally sensed each other.
Just as he could smell on her that thousand-year-old blood scent that would never fade, with her sensitivity to blood she could definitely sense the same problem in him.
Some scents couldn't be hidden, even in soul form.
"Captain Rosse, would you be willing to have a little swordsmanship match with me?", Unohana licked the corner of her lips. After she said this, the gentle expression on her face slowly turned twisted.
Her smiling eyes turned cold like an evil spirit.
Just as Rosse thought, she could sense the aura of her own kind from Rosse.
Head Captain Yamamoto had killed many, but compared to her, he was far inferior.
During the most chaotic period in Soul Society, she killed dozens or hundreds every single day.
The number didn't seem high at a glance.
But days like that continued for more than a hundred years.
Until one day, she was beaten awake by someone even crazier. After that, the world became dull and tasteless to her.
Because no matter how many she killed, her sword still wasn't sharp enough, nor could she ever reach that person's level.
She couldn't even make him enjoy a fight.
But in Rosse, she sensed an aura similar to herself from a thousand years ago.
Except Rosse's aura was even more pure. It even gave her a faint feeling of dread.
As if the number of people she killed was somehow still less than what Rosse had done.
And most importantly, she had never seen Rosse's swordsmanship.
That was simply too interesting.
For the first time in a long time, Rosse awakened the desire hidden deep in her heart, the desire that had been suppressed for nearly a thousand years.
"Right here?", Rosse looked around.
This was the Tenth Division barracks. There was no place here for two captain-level fighters to battle, especially since Unohana's strength was top-tier even among captains.
Aside from the Head Captain and himself, no one in the current Gotei 13 could claim they could confidently overpower Unohana.
"Of course not. I know a place that's perfect for a match."
Unohana's smile deepened as she moved. In the blink of an eye she was already a hundred meters away.
Seeing this, Rosse let out a soft sigh.
"Rangiku, I'm going out for a while with Captain Unohana. Hold down the division for me."
His voice traveled through the distance, landing precisely in Matsumoto Rangiku's ears.
Rangiku jerked her head up and saw Rosse in the distance, waving toward her.
Her eyes flashed with worry, but she still nodded.
"Captain, leave the division to me."
Even though they were supposed to be confined, Rosse was taking Unohana out with him.
This wasn't a small matter in her view.
And she hadn't forgotten that earlier, when Rosse let her give suggestions, she said she wanted all the masterminds behind the incident dead.
Only one, Tsunayashiro Tokinada, had died so far. That didn't count as killing all the masterminds.
But she wouldn't try to stop him.
If Rosse had decided, then she would let him do what he intended.
Maybe deep down, she too wanted to be like Rosse, to carry out righteous punishment on nobles.
At worst, if punishment came, she would face it with Rosse.
———
"Captain Unohana, really no need to notify the others?"
Using shunpo to keep pace with Unohana, the two of them flashed through Seireitei.
When they passed some patrolling Tenth Division members, those members only felt a breeze. When they turned around, no one was there.
"No need. Things like this are better the more private they are."
Unohana spoke sweetly, and the two of them, one leading and one following, eventually arrived beneath the Sokyoku Hill.
Sokyoku Hill was the execution ground of the Gotei 13, and the Sokyoku itself was said to be the power of a million zanpakuto gathered into one.
But that sort of thing was only useful against those below captain level.
Any captain-level spiritual pressure could completely ignore it.
"This is where guilty Shinigami are executed. Captain Unohana, you're not planning to execute me, are you?", Rosse teased.
"Of course not. I'm very much looking forward to fighting you," Unohana opened a hidden passage and made a gesture inviting Rosse inside.
Sokyoku Hill stood on top of a cliff. They were now under that cliff. The hidden passage seemed to lead directly into the mountain beneath the hill.
"What is this place?", Rosse followed curiously.
'If I remember correctly, this should be Urahara Kisuke and Yoruichi Shihoin's secret base. How does Unohana know about it?'
But he didn't hesitate. He simply walked into the tunnel.
With his strength, he really wasn't worried about someone plotting against him.
And with his own world behind him, he could retreat whenever he wanted.
Inside the passage, at first it was narrow, barely enough for a person. After walking several hundred steps, it suddenly opened wide.
A vast, boundless, bright open cavern appeared before Rosse.
"Not a bad place."
Looking around at the surroundings, Rosse gave his evaluation.
The area was extremely spacious. It was hard to imagine how much work Urahara Kisuke must have spent building this secret base.
But since Urahara had already been chased away, it was only right that this place belonged to Rosse now.
In the future, anything he needed to test in the Soul Society could be done here.
He wasn't worried about Urahara and the others discovering anything. He had plenty of places he could use, so there was no reason to test sensitive things here.
