Chapter 405 - Chapter 405: She Is Both the Witness and the Recorder

In the end, Robin, unable to bear it any longer, left the palace where Olvia lived.

She couldn't quite accept what Olvia had said. She needed to verify it for herself.

Watching her leave, Olvia only shook her head lightly. She didn't stop her, nor did she try to explain further.

Some things, so long as you understand them in your heart, don't need to be spoken aloud.

From what she knew, the reason Rosse had kept the two of them around was most likely to make use of them. To use their identities to spread the history that once existed.

Some parts of that history favored the World Government, while others did not.

Olvia didn't feel anything particular about it. To gain something, one must first pay a price. The price of knowing that part of history was fair enough.

If anything, she admired Rosse more for his willingness to make history public like that, unconcerned with consequences, utterly unrestrained.

He was a man who lived by his own rules, someone who believed that relying on himself alone, he could rule the world.

"What a man… who makes people instinctively want to know more about him...", Olvia let out a soft sigh, asked the maids to change her writing desk, and took out a beautifully bound, thick notebook. She flipped it open to a blank page.

[Sea Circle Calendar Year 1502, November 2nd. Saint Rosse's plaything, Olvia, was questioned by Robin. Under Olvia's guidance, Robin learned that Rosse also knew the contents of the True History. Robin even began to form a bold suspicion in her heart.]

[Saint Rosse may not have intended for her to help him alter the True History as originally thought, but rather, he had already secretly rewritten it himself. The information she was shown was only what he wanted her to see.]

Snap!

Olvia slowly closed the notebook, revealing the words on the cover—

[Records from the Perspective of a Plaything]

It was Olvia's own autobiographical record, written from her perspective. It contained a vast amount of information about both Rosse and herself, as well as the events of her earlier life.

In the future, she planned to write a biography of Rosse as well.

She was already gathering materials, though there wasn't yet enough. The future hadn't arrived, and time would fill in the rest.

Olvia stood up slowly. The lights in the palace dimmed, and the only sound that remained was her faint sigh.

"Robin... we study history, record history, but at the same time, we're also creating it."

"The truth matters, and I'll keep pursuing it. But what's more important is recording what's happening now."

"What's happening right now... is far more thrilling than any time in the past."

"To toy with the entire world using his own strength alone... to place his family atop the world... to see the other eighteen Celestial Dragon houses destroyed one by one... to falsify the True History, to alter the coordinates of Laugh Tale, and to play a game of fate against destiny itself..."

"All these brilliant histories, they are what are happening now, and what will happen in the future."

"Whether it ends in success or failure, it's destined to be carved into the annals of history."

"There must always be someone to record these things, so why not me?"

"I am both the interpreter of history, and its recorder."

"Saint Jaygarcia Rosse... I will record every one of your deeds, in the name of one despised by all..."

———

Night deepened...

Rosse did not spend the night with Rouge, but returned instead to his own palace. The same palace where Gion lived most of the time.

If he wasn't around, this place belonged solely to Gion.

The lights inside the palace were dim. Rosse returned even earlier than Gion did.

By the time he had bathed under Stella's service, Gion had finally come back.

"Robin went to question Olvia but got talked down after a few words. I don't quite get it, why did you make things so obvious? If you wanted to hide something, Olvia shouldn't have been able to notice."

Gion casually mentioned the situation at Olvia's side as she walked straight to Rosse and sat down on his lap.

She was too familiar with him. So much that a single look could communicate her meaning.

In truth, she had little interest in Olvia. She just picked a topic Rosse liked.

The only reason she went eavesdropping at Olvia's place today was because Rosse had told her to.

Gion understood Rosse's mischievous tastes.

Clearly, his Observation Haki could cover the entire palace complex, yet he made her go watch on purpose. Probably just because he wanted someone to talk to about it later.

In truth, she was often the one being used as a listener.

Rosse rarely hid his thoughts, good or bad, conclusive or uncertain.

For him, life was all about fun.

"Isn't it interesting?", Rosse smiled faintly, "I wasn't exactly subtle, but I wasn't blatant either. With about the same amount of information, Zephyr didn't notice anything, but Olvia did."

Even though Olvia spent more time beside him, most affairs were handled during the day. He hadn't hidden things from Zephyr either.

In fact, he hadn't even hidden much from Kaido. He often used the transponder snail in the open.

That Olvia saw through more, that was her own ability.

"You're comparing a fighter to a historian. That's not fair," Gion quipped.

If Rosse hadn't talked to her more often, with more detail, she wouldn't have noticed either.

But just because Olvia was taken to the True History site a few days late, how could she have figured out it had been rewritten?

Gion herself couldn't see any trace of re-engraving on the stone. How did Olvia? It's not like Rosse carved messages between the lines, that's not his style.

"Olvia's always been a clever woman. It's not strange that she'd realize it. What surprised me was that she knew I altered the True History, and still faithfully recorded it," Rosse smiled.

"Yeah, why? Isn't she obsessed with the truth, with uncovering the real history?", Gion asked curiously.

That's what she couldn't understand. With Rosse doing something like that, shouldn't they have fallen out completely?

Why would Olvia knowingly translate and record a false history?

"Because what I did is part of history. She's recording the history happening now, not restoring the history of that lost hundred years," Rosse smiled faintly.

"Huh? She changed her goal? She's making you her subject now?"

Gion looked at Rosse in surprise, 'Don't tell me! Olvia doesn't care about the Void Century anymore and just wants to record everything happening around Rosse?'

"That's the deal between us," Rosse said with a soft grin, "She helps me record this era's history, and when I finally stand at the very top, I'll give her access to the real history."

"Huh? Since when did you say that? I never heard you two talk about that in bed."

"Speaking of which, are you sure it's okay to sound so proud of your eavesdropping?", Rosse chuckled, "Besides, smart people don't need to spell everything out. That's what you call mutual understanding."

"Yes, yes, you two geniuses and your unspoken connections. And by the way, this is still your fault! Who told you to have Zannie watch the first time? Now look at me—"

"What about now?"

"Ahhh! I don't care anymore! Stella! Get in here and stand beside me!"

"Oh, still like that?"

"Mmgh!"
