Chapter 236 - Chapter 234: The Fake People

Gerald still didn't trust Paxton's abilities. To prevent things from getting out of control, he decided to have Roy go into the house with Paxton to check things out.

That way, the two of them could watch each other's backs.

Then, Paxton also changed into an outfit similar to that of a special forces unit, covering every part of his body.

Roy was still wearing his original clothes. With his physique, wearing FEA gear wouldn't do much good; in fact, it would hinder his combat effectiveness and senses.

At this point, a full 15 minutes had passed since contact was lost with the special forces unit inside the house.

Paxton, holding a submachine gun, and Roy, with his Remington M870, entered the house one after the other.

Nothing unexpected happened, and the two of them smoothly arrived at the location where the special forces unit had lost contact, which was the living room of the house.

You could see that all the special forces members were lying on the ground. Their positions were exactly the same as what was seen on the security camera footage. Were these guys really just standing there, pulling the trigger without moving, and then getting taken out by someone from the mirror world?

Even a bot in a video game wouldn't be this bad, right?

However, you could tell that these special forces members were indeed flesh and blood, and each one was missing their head.

At the same time, there were large clumps of minced meat scattered on the floor. Judging by the amount of meat, it seemed to be the remains of the special forces members' heads.

The scene was quite bizarre, like someone had been sampling food and then spat out anything that tasted disgusting onto the floor.

Over a dozen heads didn't suit their taste. This guy was really picky!

"Where did that thing go?"

Paxton's expression was very unpleasant, but because he was wearing a full-face helmet, Roy couldn't see anything.

"Maybe it went back to the basement?"

When setting up this house as an experimental site, the FEA agents would have definitely conducted a thorough inspection of the house. There were no secret doors or hidden passages.

So, unless the visitor from the other world had the ability to turn invisible and was hiding in some corner, the only possibility was that it had returned to the basement.

Well, even if it wanted to leave the house invisibly, that wouldn't be possible because the FEA had activated thermal and heartbeat sensors outside the house. Even if the person from the mirror world could turn invisible, they would still be detected.

Of course, the helmet Paxton was currently wearing also had corresponding functions, but the range was relatively small, and it required close proximity to get feedback.

"Let's go check the basement!"

Paxton was very proactive and took the lead towards the basement of the house.

This guy might have scouted this house before, so he seemed very familiar with the layout.

The basement was still empty. Roy and Paxton saw the haunted mirror stuck to the wall. At this moment, the haunted mirror had stabilized into a portal, and they could clearly see the appearance of the mirror world.

"Did that thing really go back?"

Paxton looked at the haunted mirror, lost in thought.

At this moment, Gerald's voice suddenly came through Roy and Paxton's earpieces.

"The electromagnetic interference seems to have disappeared. Radio communication is working normally, but all the security cameras seem to be broken! Felter, what's the situation inside?"

"The special forces unit has been completely wiped out. I didn't see the figure of that visitor from the other world. It seems like it returned to its own world."

"What? It went back to the mirror world?"

If the social structure of the mirror world was the same as this world, then it was very likely that a department similar to the FEA would come through the haunted mirror to investigate.

Of course, the guy from the mirror world had just single-handedly taken out a fully equipped "special forces" unit. That guy would probably think he had discovered some kind of treasure world and would call his friends to come back and continue exploring.

Paxton analyzed these two possibilities.

"We just need to wait at the scene for a while, and we should get something!"

Roy didn't know where Paxton got such strong confidence. Even he wouldn't guarantee that he could definitely deal with the creatures from the mirror world, after all, the information they had was too limited.

But Paxton just had this strange confidence, trying to persuade Gerald to continue the experiment, and even wanting to directly enter the mirror world to investigate.

Gerald naturally wouldn't agree. He didn't want to take such a big risk and even wanted to move the experimental site to avoid any further accidents.

Then the two of them started arguing again.

If it was just watching a show, Roy would have quite enjoyed it, but the two of them arguing in the earpiece was a bit annoying.

Modern people should all have this feeling. Listening to people trash-talking each other on the public mic during some competitive games is quite irritating.

"Enough! Are you guys done yet?! Why don't you just let me destroy this mirror directly and save you both from arguing!"

Just as he finished speaking, there was movement in the mirror world again. The man who had just been in this world came through the magic mirror with two other men and a woman.

The three men and one woman were suddenly stunned when they saw Roy and Paxton.

"People from this world!"

Perhaps it was Paxton's outfit that brought back some unpleasant memories for the person who had been in this world before. This person showed a clear look of disgust and then looked at Roy with a greedy gaze.

That look was like looking at some kind of food.

This guy, he wouldn't want to eat me, would he?

"Mr. Orrin, someone from the mirror world has come out!"

"Mr. Black, try to capture one or two alive! I'm sending FEAR to support you immediately... static..."

The radio was jammed again by electromagnetic interference. The reason was that the three men and one woman who had just come out of the mirror world had split open.

Yes, literally split open.

The heads of the three men split in two from the top of their heads. Inside were not brains, but countless serrated teeth and tentacles, like twisted creatures from the most terrifying nightmares. They lunged towards Roy and Paxton with a piercing screech.

Roy felt like someone had hit him hard on the head with a stick, and he felt dizzy.

Fortunately, Roy had a lot of combat experience. His finger was always on the trigger of the shotgun. He fired a shot, blasting one of the monsters lunging at him backward.

The bullets actually worked?

The other two visitors from the other world ignored their companion's life or death and continued to approach Roy.

Judging by their posture, these two guys seemed to want to use their split-open heads to bite off Roy's head.

Paxton also fired his weapon, but his situation was similar to Roy's, so the bullets completely missed, just like those special forces before. After firing a whole magazine, he didn't hit anyone.

At this time, shotguns were indeed more practical. Roy endured the dizziness and fired two more shots, knocking back the other two monsters.

"Fuck! What the hell are these things?"

The first monster that had been blasted away had already stood up again. Its scarlet eyes stared intently at Roy, radiating endless malice.

Soon, all the monsters stood up again, protecting the only woman who hadn't attacked behind them.

Roy didn't think this woman from the mirror world would be a normal person. She was likely some kind of monster as well, and her status was probably higher than the three male monsters, hence this situation.

Realizing that Roy was not easy to deal with, the three male monsters began to slowly retreat, protecting the woman, seemingly wanting to return to their original world.

At this moment, Paxton's dizziness had subsided somewhat. Seeing that these monsters wanted to run, he immediately became anxious.

"You're not going anywhere!"

As he spoke, Paxton suddenly reached out towards one of the male monsters. The male monster was suddenly pulled towards him as if by some invisible force.

Telekinesis?

Was this guy a wizard?

But after observing carefully, Roy realized that the energy Paxton was using wasn't magic. This guy was a superpowered individual!

Here, it's necessary to explain the difference between wizards and superpowered individuals in this world.

The way their abilities manifest might be similar, but fundamentally they are different.

Wizards are humans born with magical power. They are generally hereditary, and the magic they use is achieved through the transformation of magical power. Therefore, they can master various magical abilities through learning, as long as you can learn them.

The source of superpowered individuals' abilities is more complex. Some are due to genetic mutations, while others are granted through certain items.

What kind of abilities these superpowered individuals can master is completely uncertain, and it is also difficult for them to master new abilities through learning. They can only deeply develop the abilities they already possess.

Perhaps superpowered individuals are much stronger than wizards at the beginning, but they are not as versatile as wizards.

The Paxton Felter in front of him seemed to be a superpowered individual. His telekinesis was even more skilled than Madison's. In no time, he had controlled one of the male monsters.

The male monster's companions naturally wouldn't stand idly by. Two male monsters tried to attack Paxton from the left and right. This guy simply waved his hand, sweeping them away like trash.

Paxton's combat power surprised the remaining woman from the other world. Suddenly, she opened her mouth wide, and a tentacle shot out from it.

The speed of this tentacle was too fast. Paxton didn't have time to react. Just as his neck was about to be pierced by the tentacle, Roy, who had entered bullet time, suddenly reached out and intercepted the mirror world woman's tentacle in mid-air.

The mirror world woman was both shocked and angry, seemingly wanting to retract the tentacle and pull Roy over.

No way, Roy's strength attribute hadn't increased much recently, but it was still at 52 points. There was no way he could be pulled over so easily.

On the contrary, when Roy exerted force, the mirror world woman was almost pulled away by him.

After failing in the tug-of-war, the mirror world woman directly snapped off the tentacle, turned around, and fled back into the mirror world.

The remaining two male monsters also wanted to escape back into the mirror world, but they were jointly controlled by Roy and Paxton.

Snap!

The mirror of the magic mirror shattered into pieces, likely because the mirror world woman had destroyed the mirror from the other side.

At this moment, FEAR reinforcements had just arrived in the basement.

The monsters from the mirror world seemed to come with strong mental pollution and electromagnetic interference. Everyone would suffer a strong mental shock when they first observed their monstrous forms.

If someone had a weaker will, they might faint on the spot and lose consciousness.

Fortunately, the FEAR teammates had undergone rigorous training, and their willpower was relatively strong, so there wasn't a major embarrassing situation.

After the three male monsters from the mirror world were subdued by FEAR, Gerald also entered the basement with the agents.

"What the hell are these monsters?"

Gerald considered himself a FEA agent for ten years and had seen all sorts of weird things, even the Devil, but he had never seen such bizarre and twisted creatures.

"Mr. Orrin, I don't know what these monsters are either."

Roy carefully observed the three captured monsters. If they didn't transform, their appearance was exactly the same as humans. Except for their relatively stiff and dull expressions, there were almost no flaws to be seen.

Aside from the appearance issue, these monsters were also injured by bullets. Their physical fitness was a bit stronger than humans, but not to the point where they were completely impossible to deal with.

This situation was very similar to a certain internet setting Roy had seen in his previous life: the Fake People.

The Fake People originally originated from a found-footage horror work. With the contributions of many netizens, it eventually became a set of terrifying lore.

It was very similar to the Slender Man that Roy had dealt with before.

Could it be that the world in the mirror was a world belonging to the Fake People?

"What happened to the mirror?"

After examining the three male monsters, Gerald found that the most important haunted mirror had been shattered.

"One of the monsters escaped back to the mirror world. The mirror was shattered from the other side by that thing."

Paxton answered Gerald's question.

"The mirror could actually be shattered from the other side? It's a good thing we didn't risk sending anyone into the mirror world!"

If someone entered the mirror world and then the mirror was shattered, they might be trapped in that terrifying world forever. Just thinking about it made one feel a lingering fear.

"Mr. Orrin, I have some speculations I'd like to discuss with you."

Gerald immediately nodded after seeing Roy's serious expression.

"Okay, let's go back to the office to talk!"

"Director, I'd also like to hear what Mr. Black has to say."

Paxton looked at Gerald with a cold face, his attitude very firm.

Gerald's mouth twitched. He definitely didn't want the other party to freeload, so his mind raced, trying to find a suitable excuse to refuse.

"Felter, you still need to take these three monsters to the base and lock them up. You're the most reliable person for this task."

Gerald's reason was impeccable, and Paxton could only watch him and Roy leave with a dark face.

Oh, and Sultana too. Gerald had also taken Sultana away.

At this moment, Terrence Kaufman came over and greeted Paxton.

"Deputy Director, what should we do next?"

Paxton, in a bad mood, glared at the balding middle-aged man.

"Clean up the scene, take these three monsters to Base 9! Also, you collect all the fragments of the haunted mirror. Not a single piece can be lost!"

"Huh?"

Terrence Kaufman looked at the mirror fragments on the ground with wide eyes. Some of the mirror fragments had shattered into dust.

"Deputy Director, how are we supposed to collect these?"

"That's your problem! These fragments can be pieced back together, so not a single one can be missing. Do you understand what I mean?"

Looking at Paxton, whose eyes were full of meaning, Terrence Kaufman agreed with a mournful face.

"Understood, Deputy Director."
