"How are they still not out yet? I'm bored to death here."
Near the main gate of the Arasaka Coastal District, two Chevillon Emperor 720s idled quietly, engines purring, ready to move at a moment's notice. Parked beside them was a sleek, purple Gudra sports car.
Rebecca sat in the back seat of one of the Emperors, a massive machine gun resting across her lap. She propped her cheek against the weapon's body, grumbling under her breath, visibly restless.
In the driver's seat, Falco lounged comfortably, tuning the car's radio. In the passenger seat, Pilar had his legs up on the dashboard, humming along to the broadcast without a care in the world.
"Patience, kid," Falco said in his steady, mellow tone. "Our friend Lin Mo stirred up quite the storm in there. There'll be plenty of Arasaka guards chasing him, I'm sure. I've got no doubt he'll get out safe, but it won't be quick—not with a lady by his side. A gentleman takes care of the lady first, after all."
"Tch! Old man, wanna bet?" Rebecca perked up suddenly, eyes glinting. "I bet little Lin Mo will be out in five minutes—tops!"
Falco chuckled. "Oh? What are the stakes?"
"If I win, you have to invite Lin Mo out for a drink. If I lose, I'll buy you one. Deal?" Rebecca smirked.
Before Falco could answer, Pilar jumped in from the front seat, snickering. "Heh, sis, you're still such a brat. Always dragging people out for drinks—careful, or he might start avoiding you!"
"Shut it, you idiot brother. Who asked you?" Rebecca snapped, her irritation flashing. She lifted her machine gun and pressed the cold barrel right against the back of Pilar's head.
Feeling the chill of steel on his skull, Pilar instantly raised both hands in mock surrender. "I yield! I yield! Please spare my life, oh mighty little sister!"
Falco just laughed softly from the driver's seat, waiting until Rebecca lowered her weapon before saying, "All right, I'll take that bet. But as for getting Lin Mo to join us for a drink, I can't make promises. I'll try, but no guarantees."
"Fine, but don't go back on your word!" Rebecca grinned.
"That's fine by me. A single phone call's no big deal. Either way, I don't lose much on this one." Falco smiled calmly.
They kept chatting idly, a couple minutes slipping by unnoticed—until Lin Mo's voice suddenly crackled through their comms:
"I'm at the main gate. Get ready."
The second his voice came through, Rebecca let out a cheer, her face lighting up. She turned to Falco, teasing, "Well, old man, don't you dare back out now!"
Falco sighed with a helpless smile. "Looks like I lost the bet," he admitted, then added, "All right, everyone—get your cloaks on. Work's about to start."
At that, Pilar opened the glove compartment and pulled out an optical camo cloak, throwing it loosely over his shoulders.
Rebecca groaned but did the same, muttering as she put hers on, "I still don't get why we have to wear these dumb things. We look like a bunch of scared little thieves."
Falco defended the decision patiently: "Now's not the time for pride, kid. We're up against Arasaka. If we slip up and they track us down later, we'll be in real trouble. Lin Mo set this up for our safety."
As the support team, if they were ever called to act, it meant the infiltration team had been exposed and was fleeing with pursuit behind them.
In that situation, unless they wiped out every pursuer, they'd leave witnesses. And Arasaka's counterintelligence division never let things slide. If they got even a glimpse of their faces, builds, or cyberware profiles…
Unless they changed their appearances immediately afterward, it would just be a matter of time before Arasaka hunted them down.
So a cloak to distort body outlines—and at least a mask to hide their faces—was essential.
Falco was even thinking he'd have to call in a favor later and get his beloved car refitted, just to be safe.
"Fine, whatever," Rebecca grinned, brushing it off. "At least I get to shoot something tonight. My baby's been itching for action!"
She slung the cloak over her shoulders and rested her oversized gun on the open window. Her slender arms strained under the weight—clearly, the weapon was far beyond what she should be handling.
Still, Rebecca had a soft spot for big guns. And since Lin Mo had paid everyone's advance fees upfront for this job, she'd splurged some of her cut to buy the heavy hardware.
Thanks to Lin Mo's connections—through Regina, their fixer—she'd gotten it through a private channel.
Being one of Regina's new partners had its perks. Lin Mo's reputation as a generous, loaded newcomer had already spread, though few realized how thin his actual social network was.
For small-time acquisitions like this, though, Regina's reach was more than enough.
Rebecca wasn't the only one who'd upgraded either—Maine and the others had all used the job's advance payment to upgrade their loadouts.
"Ha! You call that a big gun?" Pilar taunted, grinning smugly as he pulled something from under his feet. "Check out your big brother's custom grenade launcher. With this baby, I don't even need to use my hands anymore. I can lob a grenade hundreds of meters—just wait, I'll show you a fireworks display later!"
"Tch." Rebecca rolled her eyes but, unusually, didn't bother arguing.
Her "big gun" was really just a Constitution Arms Defender LMG—a solid weapon, sure, but nowhere near a true heavy machine gun. Without reinforced cyberarms, she couldn't handle those anyway; the recoil alone would throw her straight out the window.
Sometimes she thought about getting Gorilla Arms like Maine's, but for personal reasons, she'd always held off.
Falco's Emperor 720 remained parked calmly by the roadside, giving them a clear view of the compound gate in the distance.
"They're out," he muttered suddenly.
Bright headlights burst through the open gate—then a massive truck roared out like a dragon breaking free, its horn bellowing in triumph.
"Holy shit!" Falco, usually the picture of composure, couldn't help but jolt in shock. His eyes went wide as he stared at the monstrous vehicle.
He wasn't the only one—Pilar and Rebecca both gaped at the Behemoth thundering out of the Arasaka complex.
"Damn! Where the hell did Lin Mo get that beast? That's so fucking badass!" Rebecca couldn't help but shout in awe.
Falco chuckled, shaking his head. "Who knows? That boy always manages to surprise us."
Rebecca elbowed him playfully. "Enough talk, old man! Let's move already—you don't see Maine and the others just sitting there, do you?"
"Yeah, yeah," Falco replied with a faint smile, stepping on the accelerator.
