Night fell.
Back home, Lin Mo sat cross-legged at his desk, idly twirling a pen between his fingers like a coiling dragon. The motion was instinctive, his mind focused entirely on the paper in front of him.
Scrawled across it were scattered phrases—Militech, CTO, limousine.
After his talk with Kitagawa Hiro earlier, he'd pieced together more details.
Now he was fairly certain: the limo driver responsible for the crash was none other than Militech's CTO—Royn Levak.
A man worth billions, standing at the pinnacle of global power. To him, even the "big shots" Jack often mentioned would have been nothing more than footnotes.
For men like that, anything they did was "justified." Wealth and power bent morality to their will. What was wrong became "right." The blind masses might never even know the truth.
Thirty-plus lives—just an after-dinner amusement.
What puzzled Lin Mo, though, was that such a titan could arrive in Night City without a ripple.
The news had been filled with pomp about his impending visit, the kind of spectacle reserved for heads of state.
And yet here he was, slipping in quietly—only to make a bloody scene that would draw every eye. Why?
Even if the news channels buried it, the bodies on the street couldn't be hidden. The corpos' intel networks surely already knew.
Lin Mo had a strong hunch: his path and this CTO's would cross again.
For now, though, all he could do was record the name. If fate allowed, he wouldn't mind killing him someday.
With his thoughts sorted, Lin Mo set the notes aside and pulled out the simulator.
If his guess was right, after tonight's chaos tomorrow should unfold as planned: he would carry out the infiltration.
He steadied his thoughts, slid on the headband.
[Simulation Start]
[It's Friday. Miserable as always, you still have to go to school…]
Lin Mo skimmed past the useless school routine, straight to the real content.
[After class, you and David headed to Lizzie's Bar, where the team and Maine's crew awaited.]
[But tonight, unlike the earlier plans, there was a surprise. A white-haired netrunner sat among them—someone who hadn't been part of the original roster. Why was she here?]
Lin Mo wasn't surprised.
He'd changed the plan himself, swapping Sasha out for Lucy.
In the earlier runs, whenever things went south, Sasha refused to abandon him—even when escape was the only smart move. Touching in real life, but in a simulation? Useless.
Lucy, on the other hand, had never liked him much. If he ordered her to run while he stayed behind, she'd bolt without a second thought.
And it was just a simulation. No harm in trying.
[Yes—it was Lucy. The same netrunner you used to send scrounging trash heaps. Finally, she'd clawed her way into a real gig.]
Lin Mo twitched at the text. Great. Now I sound like a trash-tier boss.
[You explained the swap: Sasha would join the hacker team in the backline, Lucy would run infiltration with you. Some were surprised, but most trusted your judgment.]
[Sasha sulked, but you ignored her.]
[The mission rolled out, smooth as clockwork.]
[At Arasaka Waterfront, though, an unexpected twist: someone else had struck first. The perimeter walls were blown apart, corpses and flames littering the grounds. Gunfire still rattled—battle ongoing.]
[Maine urged retreat. With Arasaka reinforcements surely en route, staying was suicide.]
[You refused, smiling. "In Chinese, there's a saying: fish in troubled waters."]
[The teams moved as planned. You and Lucy slipped inside while the defenders were occupied.]
[The attackers were Animals—musclebound, packing heavy weapons. Their chaos drew all the fire.]
[The two of you ghosted through the research facility, nearly unopposed. The guards left inside were few and quickly dispatched. The researchers had scattered.]
[Lucy impressed you. Her grasp of Arasaka systems was uncanny. She tore through ICE faster than expected, pulling data and schematics cleanly.]
[Mission complete. But the cyberpsychotic test subjects couldn't be freed. With crossfire raging outside, dragging them out would make you targets for both sides.]
[You carried only one frail cyberpsycho on your back and fled with Lucy.]
