When Lin Mo finished his cyberware maintenance and walked out of the basement, he stepped into the back alley behind Misty's shop.
Breathing in the foul, heavy air of the alley, he felt a strange wave of relief flood through his body, as if every cog in his machine had just been oiled.
Maybe it was just psychological, but he really did feel better. After Viktor's check-up, there was always that itch being soothed, that comfort.
As Viktor had explained, this was actually a good sign—it meant the cyberware was integrating well with his body, the neural links were flowing smoothly. After maintenance, the brain released dopamine, reminding the body: "This feels good. Do it again."
No wonder Beichuan Hiroshi had acted like he'd just left a high-end brothel after his tune-up. His integration must've been just as good.
Stretching, Lin Mo slipped back into Misty's esoterica shop through the rear door, only to find David lounging on the meditation chair, a wide grin plastered across his face.
"Lin Mo, you're back! How was Vik's work?"
Leaning against the counter, Misty saw Lin Mo return looking refreshed. She clearly knew what he'd just had done, and asked with a soft smile.
"In my eyes, Uncle Vik will always be the best ripperdoc in Night City."
Lin Mo praised shamelessly, then glanced at David, gave him a kick to the ankle, and said irritably:
"Stop grinning like an idiot. Judging by that face, did you sneak over to the club across the street while I was gone?"
David scrambled to his feet.
"No way I'd go there… Misty gave me a tarot reading."
"Oh? Must've been a good spread then?" Lin Mo raised an eyebrow.
Truth be told, he trusted Misty's readings. Even the game hinted at her real depth in the occult.
Still, fortune-telling wasn't his thing. He trusted his simulator more.
Before David could answer, Misty spoke gently:
"The Fool upright, the Moon reversed, Death reversed, the Wheel of Fortune upright. David's spread is rare—no card pointed to a bad outcome. It suggests he has some very promising encounters in his future."
Lin Mo nodded thoughtfully. He'd almost asked about the meaning of those four cards… but then he caught David's smug, cocky expression.
Damn. No way I'm letting him gloat more.
So he just nodded flatly. "Good to know. But don't get too full of yourself. Vik's waiting in the basement. Go—don't keep him waiting."
He patted David's shoulder to send him off.
"But… I still haven't decided what chrome to get…" David hesitated.
"I've already arranged it. Just go in alone—Vik's a good man, no need to be nervous." Lin Mo said calmly.
David shot him a suspicious look, leaned in, and whispered:
"You didn't secretly line me up for a Big Cannon implant, did you…"
Lin Mo's face darkened. He smacked David hard on the head, like he was trying to knock sense into him.
"Do I look like that kind of person? Quit stalling and get moving."
David rubbed his head, still doubtful, but eventually left through the back door.
Misty quietly watched their banter. After David left, she chuckled softly.
"What an interesting kid. No wonder Jackie chose to mentor him—their personalities must fit perfectly."
Lin Mo gave a slight nod.
Last night had been David's first time meeting Jackie, but Jackie had already told him something similar—David's character fit his taste.
Now, with just the two of them left, Misty looked at Lin Mo with a smile full of expectation.
"Lin Mo, you really don't want to know what those four cards mean?"
As a professional reader, she desperately wanted him to accept one of her readings.
But ever since they'd met, despite his apparent interest in tarot, for some reason he always refused when it came to himself.
She tried again, seizing the chance.
Lin Mo hesitated, tempted—but after a moment, he sighed and shook his head.
"Forget it, Misty. Sorry, but I'm still not ready for that."
"…Alright." Misty's voice carried genuine disappointment.
Seeing her expression falter, Lin Mo opened his mouth to comfort her—
—but at that moment, an incoming call flashed across his HUD.
A pentagram icon lit up in the corner of his vision.
Finally… Lin Mo thought flatly.
Thanks to the simulator's foresight, he wasn't surprised at all by this call.
He excused himself to Misty, saying he needed to take it, then stepped into a quiet corner.
"Hello."
He answered politely.
It was a holo-call, their images hovering in the corner of each other's vision.
On Lin Mo's end, a woman appeared. She was of Chinese descent, wearing a single-eye visor that left her left eye exposed. Her face was plain, but there was an unmistakable sharpness in her presence that made her stand out.
"Mr. Lin Mo, is it? First time meeting—hello. My name is Regina Jones. I'm a fixer in Watson. I've also received your little gift. Hard to believe the Moxes went out of their way for you. But what I really want to know is—how did you know I was looking into cyberpsychosis lately?"
No pleasantries. Regina's words came in a sharp volley—identity, context, straight to the point.
Lin Mo paused, choosing a vague reply.
"Just… a simple attempt."
"Fine. Looks like you don't plan on explaining. But listen—dropping people on me without a word? That's not how business is done. I'll let it slide this time. Next time, remember—first impressions matter."
"This call counts as our introduction. From now on, if you run into trouble, you can call me. As long as the price is right, I can solve most problems."
Her words quickened, like she had no interest in dragging the conversation out.
"Wait, Ms. Jones—there's something I'd like to discuss with you."
