"You little brat, what are you doing here all of a sudden? If reception hadn't pulled up the company database and confirmed you were my brother, you wouldn't have even made it past the lobby!"
On the top floor of Zetatech Tower, in the executive lounge, Xu Wanxue sat on a plush sofa, leaning forward with an expression of irritation—half scolding, half exasperated—as she looked at the young man across from her.
Lin Mo's face remained calm. Her reprimand barely stirred him. Once upon a time, he might have lowered his head, humbled himself, and begged for her forgiveness.
But not now.
Now, seeing her sitting there safe and sound, the weight pressing on his chest finally lifted a little.
Still, the danger hadn't passed, and he had no time for pleasantries.
"I told you on the phone, didn't I? I said I'd come by your company today. You agreed." Lin Mo shrugged, feigning innocence.
Xu Wanxue's lips twitched. She wanted to scold him further but realized—technically—he wasn't wrong.
It was just past midnight when he'd shown up, but still within the day he'd mentioned.
This brat… always finding loopholes. she thought with mild irritation.
"Fine, then. Tell me—what was so urgent that you had to rush over in the middle of the night?"
She crossed her hands neatly over her lap and reclined into the sofa, trying to maintain the dignified air of an older sister.
Lin Mo met her gaze, his tone flat, almost detached.
"Because you're going to die, sis."
He said it to shock her into paying attention.
The air froze. The room went utterly silent. Xu Wanxue's eyelid twitched—then, glaring in disbelief, she snatched up a throw pillow from the sofa and hurled it at him.
"You rotten little punk! Now you're cursing your sister? After all I've done raising you?!"
Lin Mo caught the pillow calmly. Even with his usual self-control, he couldn't help the exasperation creeping onto his face.
"Sis, I'm not joking around. I don't want to waste time—actually, I—"
"—Actually, you learned some kind of fortune-telling trick from an old beggar, right? You can predict bits and pieces of the future now?"
Before he could even explain, Xu Wanxue interrupted him with a teasing smile, as if she already knew exactly what he was going to say.
Lin Mo froze, dumbstruck. His expression said everything: How the hell did you know?
Xu Wanxue chuckled, folding her arms with mock pride.
"You've used that same excuse for years, you know. You really think I'm that easy to fool? Sure, when I first found you, I could tell you were special even as a kid—but you're still my brother. How could I not trust what you say?"
Lin Mo fell silent.
He hadn't expected her to accept everything so easily—without even demanding an explanation.
"So," she continued, taking a casual sip of her coffee, "how exactly am I supposed to die today?"
She asked it calmly, as if they were talking about the weather.
After a long pause, Lin Mo began describing what he'd learned from the simulator—though he kept the existence of the device itself hidden.
Xu Wanxue listened quietly, studying his face the whole time. Then, resting her chin on her hand, she smiled faintly and asked, almost playfully,
"So, my dear brother, what's your grand plan to save me? You think I'll be fine just by staying in the building?"
Lin Mo sighed.
"Don't play dumb, sis. If your AV crashed, it means someone inside the company tampered with it. There's a mole. And the fact that an ambush team was ready right after the crash means you've already been marked. The only way to fix this is to dig out the problem from the source."
He felt like he was losing his mind—how could she be so calm about her own assassination?
Xu Wanxue let her smile fade and sighed softly.
"I'm not pretending, Mo. It's just… this kind of situation isn't that hard to handle. The assassins' only advantage is being in the dark. Now that we know about them, I can have the company's internal security division sweep the ranks and expose the mole. Then we can bait out the assassins one by one."
"As for the mastermind… that's trickier. From your description, it's unlikely they're part of Zetatech. Our corporate culture's relatively peaceful compared to other firms. With my track record, I doubt I've made any internal enemies capable of pulling this off."
"So the real culprit is probably from another corporation. Which one, we'll have to learn from the mole—assuming they survive interrogation."
Her logic was sharp and unflappable. Lin Mo nodded reluctantly.
Her plan wasn't wrong—just limited.
The real problem was what came after. Even if they found proof of corporate involvement, the perpetrators would just pin it on some disposable scapegoat.
That was Night City's way.
"Still," she said, softening, "I appreciate how worried you are. At least all my affection for you wasn't wasted."
With a bright smile, she stood and walked over, ruffling his hair roughly.
Lin Mo grimaced but didn't resist.
"For the next few days, don't go to class. If someone's targeting me, you might be in danger too. Stay home—or here at the company. Your sister will protect you," she said gently.
"Sis… there's something else I need to tell you."
Lin Mo took a deep breath, as if steeling himself for something irreversible. He stepped back, slipping free from her grasp.
"What is it?" she asked.
"I want you to let me handle this. Personally." His tone was calm, firm.
"I'll find whoever's behind this—and give them a dignified death."
If not for the simulator's warning, no one—not even the assassins—would have known what was coming.
Accidents were Night City's native flora. Even Saburo Arasaka would one day die from one.
But with the simulator, Lin Mo could predict those accidents. Which meant it was his duty to eliminate them.
Xu Wanxue blinked, then smiled wryly.
"I'm touched, really. But these things are best left to professionals."
Lin Mo looked up, his voice steady.
"Sis, did you see the news a few days ago? That attack on the Arasaka Waterfront?"
"I did, but—wait…" Her eyes widened slightly. "Don't tell me—"
"That was me."
Xu Wanxue froze. Her eyes swept up and down her brother, searching for any trace of bravado or exaggeration.
But his calm, serious gaze told her he wasn't bluffing.
"Sis," he said quietly, "maybe we should start over. Your little brother… is a once-in-a-generation genius."
It was time.
Time to come clean about everything—the missions, the empire he'd built in the shadows, the fortune he'd amassed.
